@tatertots00 HAHAHAHA roy j.jr was one of the GREATEST.... & i like him but, as a boxer he was probably SALVADOR SANCHEZ' BIGGEST FAN.... rumor has it he would watch ol' fights of my boy CHAVA, b4 his bouts.... To Get inspired & shit Hahahaha RESPECT THE FUCKING GREATNESS!!! REST.IN.PARADISE CHAMP
TOP 3 GREATEST MOST SKILLED BOXERS TO EVER LACE UP GLOVES FUCK ALL UR STATS & SHIT(TO A CERTAIN LEVEL) STYLES MAKE FIGHTS & NOBODY FUCKING WITH THESE 3 DUDES, IN THEIR PRIME!!!! NOBODY........
Robinson was something special, he really had it all. Power, speed, footwork, combinations, great chin, tons of heart, punching accuracy, stamina, self belief, and beat quality opposition on a regular basis. If you don't think Sugar Ray Robinson is the best ever, then simply put your a brain dead idiot!!
Roy Jones Jr is the greatest of all time DOMINATED 2 hall of famers in there prime. Moved up from middleweight to heavyweight won 40+ fights no real losses, NOT ONE COMPETITIVE FIGHT during that span.
No boxers before Ali should be considered 99% of fighters were weekend warriors. Ali is the man that made boxing a profession. 99% of the fighters that Sugar Ray Robinson fought were weekend warriors.
I habe to agree that Sugarb was the best but I think not enough is made of LAi's ability to handle bigger stronger guys (Liston, Forema, Chavers).. this is not made enough of in a sport where size and weight is fundamental to a fair fight exept in the Heavyweights.. Ali for mine because of this
Robinson was great but the best ever? Not quite. Barry McGuigan is the only one on this panel who knows anything. The 3 Brits are just shills for Ray and Ali.
@NLR884evr Frank Bruno? Don't know where you come up with that. The whole debate is subjective, at best. Robinson couldn't "do it all", no fighter has ever been able to "do it all." He was great and ONE of the best, not THE best.
@lizardman77 You offer nothing but hyperbole and rhetoric. It's well understood boxing nomenclature that Ray Robinson could "do it all." He could murder you with either hand, he could out box you, he could out-slug you. Ray Robinson could do it all. Perhaps you'd be so kind as to enlighten me as to who is the greatest in your humble opinion?
@NLR884evr Who I think is the "greatest" is irrelevant. Robinson could NOT fight on the inside. Carmen Basilio and Gene Fullmer proved that, as well as Jake LaMotta. All fighters have their weaknesses, Ray was no exception. So no, he couldn't "do it all" there never has been a fighter that could. Any discussion of the best p4p ever, is subjective, no matter who the "experts" are.
@lizardman77 All fighters have their weaknesses but Ray had fewer than all. While I will agree with you that your opinion is irrelevant I don't think boxings most trusted historians and those who've seen him fight opinions are irrelevant. "he was seamless, with no fault lines."--Bert Sugar. Ray did lose to LoMatta by 10rd decision and Ray reversed that decision 5 times. Losing only to LoMatta in his first 132 fights with 84 ko. Ray did lose to Basillio, Fullmer but he beat them in return
@lizardman77 Since you say your opinion is irrelevant why do you opine? You're a rabble-rouser, a catastrophic spider who's utterly clueless about boxing and grossly misguided in your assessment of Sugar Ray Robinson. If you want to know who the best is of all time then ask those who've seen him and they'll tell you. But you're the "lizardman" and why should anyone doubt your expertise on the sweet science? You're a buffoon and an intellectual cripple.
@lizardman77 Since you have such an affinity for the opinion of Barry McGuigan here's a quote from Barry-"Sugar Ray Robinson, the greatest all-around of all time."
@hippiegirl25 did you forget that lamatta and robinson fought 7 times and lamatta only won 2 time and robinson destroyed him the other 5 time and the 2nd time he fought lamatta it was a close split decision seperated by 1 round or did you just not know and need to do better homework and yes lamatta was the first to ever beat robinson both fighting each other in there prime but robinson destroyed lamatta on more then one occasion proving it wasn't just his night he owned lamatta
does every 1 forget la motta he beat ray in rays prime and turpin but every1 always forgets that they for just 1 night beat the unbeatable that has to be rememberd surly even more than basilo ray was never knockout yeah he was down a few time tho and there has been lots of fighters never ko d ray was the best but turpin n especially la motta
he still beat him many fighters done this back then it is against the rules but not uncommon how do u know ray never done it as for the 15lbs that happed all the time aswell what is ur point u dont like la motta ok thats fair enough but he still beat the best for 1 night n ray aint perfect im not disacrering wit u ray was excellent but i just feel la motta never gets cred for netin defo not the greatest boxer of all time but defo 1 of the greastest fighters
Were not talking about many fighters. That type of practice has no place in the Boxing Ring.Drinking liquor during a fight alters your ability to absorb punishment and it's a bare knuckle street tactic and it's cheating.Lamatta was a tough fighter.
ali more technique then robinson please yeah right ! salvador is maybe on fourth ike williams was a beast man my old trainer tells me he is a boxing historian adrain davis but ray robinson was the all time greatest and salvador sanchez was better than chavez
look old vids about robinson, search for him and his fight record. if you really interested in boxing, you can´t deny, that robinson was one of a kind. and abraham is a good boxer, i like him, but he´s limited, pacman and mayweather are better fighters, in my opinion!
@lizardman77 because he is the best you joker! The professional boxers know best they can see things from a trained eye. Basilio beat him on a bad night, 9 times out of 10 Ray would beat him. Robinson was ahead of his time. Everyone nowadays takes their style from him.
He was the best there was, the best there is and the best there will ever be...He was that good.(Ray Robinson)
The jab alone was brilliant, and then the movement and the speed of combination of punches and the power to go with it (Who could knock you dead with either hand)...Wow
What makes Ray Robinson great in regards to Boxing/Fighting. He had the ability to fight inside like Duran, the power of Tommy Hearns (But has the power of Hearns right hand in both of his own hands), could fight outside like Muhammed Ali, fantastic hand speed reflex's such as Mike Tyson or Floyd Patterson. Had the same boxing strategy thinking like Muhammed Ali in his fighting mantle. Had a jab like the great Larry Holmes. Added to this he was also given tips by Joe Louis & Henry Armstrong.
The only thing that I wish that could be done to show how good he was (Ray Robinson) - is if a film like "Raging Bull" could be made about Jake La Matto - should be made for Ray Robinson.
He was that good. He was better then Pac-man and Mayweather by miles. Thats how good he was.
There must be a film made about this man (Ray Robinson)... Please??????
Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest fighter/boxer in the History of Boxing. He was not the prefect man. No one is. However, he was the greatest fighter/boxer in the history of the sport. He was a close as you can to prefection in boxing and fighting. Only Muhammed Ali had a better technique then him and that was Ali movement. Muhammed Ali's movement in the fight between Cleveland Williams in 1966 as the greatest example movement and footwork in boxing history. But Ray Robinson was the greatest.
God be with you Reg Gutteridge. Sadly missed a truly knowledgable man. A wonderful commentator, a true gentleman and a sad loss to the sport of boxing. R.I.P Reg.
Top five of all time came out in a newspaper/magazine article not too long ago; Ray Robinson was one of the five, as was Ali, & Willie Pep. Can't remember the other two that were mentioned.
Hagler, Leonard and Hearns would have faced the same as Benvenueti, Valdes, Napoles - Monzon in his best would have been too difficult to beat, cause he was so determined, so skillfull and so accurate with his punches. You propably know what happened to Griffith. So what makes Hagler or Hearns so much better? Leonard'd have had best chance to beat him, but i think even he'd have lost.
They are doing a great disservice to Harry Greb when they say Monzon (who was an amazing fighter) was the first truly legendary middleweight. Greb was a top 3 p4p all time great champion
the two old farts are just boring, "he was a charming man" who cares, they talk about stories that have nothing to do with boxing. SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!

floyd is not history, as great as he is he has quite a way to go...quit fighting little guys or old guys, fight cotto/margarito/williams beat them decisively and then begin thinking of legendary status...it takes great fights to make great fighters, alifrazier, leonardhearns, barreramorales, etc!
Ray Robinson and then Muhammad Ali...that's the way it should be...Even Ali would agree.
