@hudson0815 spanish is a very important language in the USA...also if u work in an airport, they're obviously gonna have loads of staff speaking different languages because of the mass number of people coming from all over the world.

When I came to Toronto I was just so tired that I sit becouse I had another trip to Vancouver and that are five hours, but I just cant becouse a officer ask me what I was doing there I told her that I had another trip and she told me: you can't be here.There were a lot of people sit there Most of them european or americans. I think thats stupid not all colombians do this is like saying that all americans are racist.

@loveub88 Hello guys, I'm Colombian American, I have dual citizenship. Yes, I totally agree with you unfortunatley, if you come from Colombia with Colombian passport, it's much more likely this situation. Now, if you enter the U.S. with American passport coming from Colombia is less likely to happen; however, U.S. customs, they watch everything, even your place of birth, in my case my place of birth is Colombia and nationality USA. Lo triste es que en México, la policía lo trata muchas veces a uno como mexicano mucho peor que estos oficales trataron a María en la película.

Además, un conocido ecuatoriano que viajaba a Holanda con conexión en México, me contó que fue muy mal tratado en el aeropuerto de la ciudad de México, lo cual me avergüenza mucho.

En fin, la película es muy buena, todo, el soundtrack, las actuaciones.

We Americans really can't comment on what it's like to be Colombian or Colombian American and pretend that we have any idea about how hard or easy it is or how realistic this scene is. We can't relate because as American's we have it too easy.

Guys, I'm Colombian-American. I have come many times from Colombia to the U.S. I really have never been in JFK airport. I land at Miami International airport; all the flights from Colombia, Ecuador, are "hot flight" that are assummed that they come from a few people with drugs. That is the assumption from U.S. customs; so that is a normal attitude on the officer; even more, it is worse I think, thanks

I am afraid that immigration does have the right to interogate like this, but from my travels I have gathered that the serverity of the questioning has a lot to do with the nationality on your passport. For instance I am American and just came back from Ecuador & Colombia and found getting through customs much easier than expected. In Maria's case the fact that she speaks absolutely no English is a pretty big give away... .

@kushbooq Yes, you have a very valid point! Plus, and I really do hate to say this because it is a horrible horrible generalization about the country, but usually the only time columbia is in the news is when it's a news story about drugs. So a lot of police assume that someone coming from Columbia is carrying drugs. It's, like I said, a terrible generalization because not everyone is a drug mule, but Columbia does have an aweful reputation.... :/

I came into the U.S. from a visit to Nigeria. After giving the customs person answers that they didn't like they detained me and stripped searched me. They asked me who bought my luggage. Well, my bag was a gift. They asked who bought my ticket. I wasn't the one who picked up the tickets. Wrong answers! Based on my experience.I don't think that this scene is exaggerated...They eventually let me goThey had the wrong person. I was a human services advocate & vegetarian who had never tried weed.

When you're arriving to the United States from a foreign country, customs/immigration agents can detain/question and search you with no probable cause because national security overrides your constitutional rights. That authority is given to them by congress.
