I've always thought it showed how angry and mean the God of the Old Testament really comes off. Shows familiar stories in a different light and exposes them for their cruelty. Just my take.

I think I read somewhere that the songwriter said that this song is actually meant to be anti-government which is what makes it Punk. But its like using religious references to refer to the politics.
