My 14 year old son showed me this commercial and he said it made him feel all warm and fuzzy, his cousins who are around the same age said that it was corny and stupid. It concerns me that kids today are being taught that it is bad to feel good, they are bombarded by ads and movies that tell them that they are destroying the planet, they are to fat and that America is a horrable country. Parents need to teach kids that facisim is wrong and that it's ok to think for yourself and to feel good.
I think the use of the chauffeur is because Bruce Lee had a very popular TV series back then called The Green Hornet in which he played a chauffeur. This guy is dressed exactly as Lee and even walks like he did in the series. And they show him smoking!! in a commercial, these days thats a capital crime punishable by death isn't it? This was a great ad, I remember it well when it was new and on TV night after night. What a great country we had then, gas was .25 cents a gallon for regular.
I'm old enough to remember this ad on TV, we thought 'it' would never end. And 'it' was life in America the way it was and should always be. Those of you that are much younger don't understand what you've lost, what has been stolen from you. Those days like America won't be back unless you fight very hard to get it back. This and the Dodge sheriff commercials during 1970 were GREAT, and I miss them and I miss my country. The politicians, political correctness, big brother have stolen America.
Great old commercial from the "Mad Men" and a simpler time when we were at the peak of our industrial output, space was the "final frontier" and the endless optimism for a better tomorrow still ruled.
did this really air on television? three minutes is very long for a tv commercial. other commercials i've seen from circa 1968 usually run no longer than a minute. does anyone out there actually remember seeing this ad on tv first-hand?
I actually remember this commercial. I use to sing the jingle all the time as a kid. I was 11 at the time. When I grew up, I did get a Mustang. A '71 302 V8 Mustang. I still have it. They were built to last. Alas, they just don't make cars like this any more. Thanx for the commercial, the song, and the memories. You made my day.
This beautiful ad belongs to an era of network TV that no longer exists. Back in the 60's I was watching Man from UNCLE, Gunsmoke, Mission Impossible, Love American Style, etc. on the three networks: ABC, NBC, and CBS. Now the networks fill half of their schedules with cheap reality shows. NBC will soon give up 5 more hours of dramatic programming when Jay Leno moves to 10pm every night.
I miss whitewall tires, true 2 door hardtops and simple engines that you could work on yourself. The new cars are better technically, but the magic is missing...
That's an interesting comment, and it explains why today's TV ads are so forgettable and hard to remember. For instance, if you did the "Coppertone Quick Tan" ad or a "Things Go Better with Coke" ad today, you couldn't show a bunch of white people having a good time. You'd have to make it into some kind of bland multicultural thing which would turn it into a really boring ad.
What a great singing group. They sound like the New Christy Minstrels. That jingle is fabulous. That's the Dorothy Chandler Music Center in the background which opened in 1964. Unfortunately they built that horrible Walt Disney Concert Hall across the street which is REALLY cramped to sit in.
I just bought my first Mustang! (2003 Convertible GT) I feel like I'm part of some history! Mustang really does make it happen; My husband is always a lucky guy after I hear that engine growl and I settle in my leather seats... rawr....
I was born 10 years after this commerical was produced but love the way it was put together. Back when commercials were enjoyable to watch unlike today. Brilliant campaign FORD did for the Mustang in 68. The way they were able to involve so many demographics in this one spot. Making a more mature woman feel young and shy, the older distinguished working male feeling like a kid and care free when he is in his mustang. Love this spot!!
Yea, Ford needs to put all effort into the Mustang like in the 1960's and let it all ride on that. It probably would pull Ford out of debt. Forget the Hokus Focus and the Fusion what ever that is? Cars back then meant something...
The can't forget the Focus. It's just about all that's keeping Ford going at the moment and in the Guinness Book of Records. One in every 17 cars sold world wide is a Ford Focus which is no mean feat.
Ford Australia isn't in much better shape than Ford US. Ford Europe is thriving which says alot for their car choices.
As beautiful as the Mustang is I'm afraid that rising fuel prices are dilling it :(
If you could get your head out of the Golden Oldies zone for just a sec, you'd see how much the new Mustang's like the old-as for your bitching about the Fusion & the Focus, not everybody likes, or can afford, a muscle car, especially in today's economic climate. Think on that a little bit.
Only recently, I was fortunate to discover "youtube." I now enjoy watching many television commercials seeing as a child in the 1960s, making me feel young again, but this one for Mustang was the best!
My late father owned a 1967 white Mustang with red interior that I loved. (And, wish I could have owned!)
I thank you very much for uploading this advertisement
that is perhaps one of the best examples of a "simpler," perhaps more uplifting time when anything seemed possible!
What a great commercial! My favorite part was the housewife in the blue hardtop who gets hit on by the college guys at the stop sign. Classic stuff there. Also cool to see downtown Los Angeles when the Music Center and the DWP were brand new buildings with nothing around them. I played this at the office and now everyone is whistling the jingle!
Hey, the guy who takes delivery of a new 68 is a 37 year old Philip Bruns. Seinfeld's first TV father. Mr. Bruns has always been a great comedic charactor actor. He was only on one Seinfeld episode
See that? If you get a Mustang, you too can be a 45 year old guy who picks up highschool girls who will blow off their quarterback boyfriends to ride in your Mustang.
Thank you all for your nice comments.
Don't know what is wrong with that 4 people. :)

Television was in color for rich people only, {those that made more that $1.65 an hour! }Kinda like 3D TV is today 3/12/2010.
