Excellent French Horns @ 0:31 through the end! At that point, trombones take over the melody from the trumpets. I was in High School when the first 5-0 aired and most High Bands were playing this theme as part of their half-time shows---Awesome band arrangement!!!
@MarauderOSU I'm gonna admit that I also tried to be right, but there is just NO way you can be right or wrong with the question "what is the best tv theme of all time?" as you can't measure likeability. Therefore, you thinking the Jefferson's theme being the best is just an opinion. As is mine.
I watched one episode of the new 5-0 and it sucked ass. Pretty representative of how stupid people are today compared to 1968. The real McGarrett wouldnt dress or act like an asshole like the new one does.

i watched this when i was a kid and i thought Jack Lord in the opening scene was drop dead gorgeous. Now almost 40 years later, i still think he's drop dead gorgeous!! His half-smile when he spun around never fails to set my heart a-flutter <3
This is a HORRIBLE version of this song. The drum part is horribly stepped on, the bass sounds like it's clipping most of the song and the who thing sounds tinny and shrill.
Stick with the original or at least go with a decent copy. The version by the Brian Setzer and his orchestra is really good and very true to the original (which is pretty much impossible to improve upon).
the magnificent, the splendid!!! The original Hawaii Five-O had something indescribably memorable about it....It All the characters were more cerebral.
Jack Lord on the top balcony of the Ilikai Hotel is classic. Before the present-day TV remake, if a movie version would have been considered, George Clooney would've made a great Steve McGarrett.
@TheDRexor the jetliner sequences, culminating with the engine close up fit in superbly. The opening really conveyed the culture of the location. Not the best version of the classic music tho, try the Ventures.
The new Hawaii 5-0 looks like a piece of shit in the previews. I'd rather they run the first 5 seasons once a week - no one can come close to Jack Lord.
@beauwulff Aw, come on, ol' Kono & Zulu whooped some in this show...a good ol' kanakas...well, it is kind of like watching a bull walk a tightrope, but they're cool.
One of the greatest television theme songs written. Between the video editing and the music, really one of the best TV show openings I can recall. I can't speak much for the show itself, as I rarely watched it as a kid, but what a great first minute.
yeah, the originality of the theme songs was so evident back then. Every great show's theme song, accompanied by it's video lead-in, gave each show it's own personality. Don't see that much in anything these days. Sad.....
You know I have never seen a single episode of this show but everytime I see this opening, it just takes me a very cool era and reminds you are cool TV shows were back then. That music and montage of shots is just addicting! CSI does the same thing today but obviously updated, but you can feel how THAT show opening was influenced by shows like these.
I watch season 1 dvds and think how much better the show is than everyone one of the idiotic "CSI" shows and their garbage spin offs. Detectives works cases not q tip bearing windbreaker clad technicians with no police powers.
@bluemax111f Actually the CSI's technicians have greater responsibilities & not only every bit as much police powers in most ways they outrank the uniformed officers. Their jurisdiction is sometimes more clearly defined. Back to H 5-0, the pilot movie was in two parts & was incredibly intense. All the episodes for the ensuing seasons were hard pressed to measure up to that standard brought by the pilot movie.
Best use of music and video together... should be a requirement in broadcasting classes to watch this... it moves...and you get the point. great stuff
