@confusedkid6 7401 is simple. The highest either of the other two contestants could have gotten was 32000. If he was correct, it would (and did) give him 32001, but if he was incorrect, he would have lost the least amount of money. Personally I don't think he cheated.
i'm pretty sure they have a camera pointed down at the podiums. they probably checked the video out, saw that the pen was indeed malfunctioning and aired the episode accordingly because they corroborated his story with video evidence.
no i don't think he cheated, his first response looked as if he might have misspelled the correct answer, although it does look like he glimpsed over that ladies answer, which is why he wagered only 7,000
He didn't cheat because he was already writing the answer when the pen stopped working. He also figured out that the guy with $16000 would wager all hos money, therefore the winner would win by a dollar.
i feel like he spent more time doing the math on how much he had to wager to win by just enough so if he missed it he would still have a descent amount left and ran out of time
because if you look the guy before wagered so he'd have 1 dollar left if he missed it while the man in question still won by two dollars giving him a $1 lead if the man before him had wagered it all and if he would've missed with the money he wagered he still would have been $2600 over the most the woman could've gotten
...and he was probably nervous because he knew he had just won by JUST enough... people have disorders that make them shake so its hardly that surprising for someone to shake when they are excited.
look at another youtube video of cheating in something like WWTBAM and you'll realize these are not live feeds... just "in front of a live studio audience." They decide if the show goes up and if they think cheating was involved they look into it before they air the shows and only play them if the party was found to be innocent of infraction. I'm sure it would be easy for them to check since they have those cameras behind the contestants allowing them to see what they are doing
He obviously didn't cheat. I mean seriously, does that text on the screen look like english to you? He obviously gave it a try, you can see the first "letter" is a fail so he started over, which also failed but it definitely looks like LAF with the start of an A coming up.
If he had lied about his pen malfunctioning, I'm sure the program's staffs had found out about it immediately after the show and that contestant would be put to shame. So, I don't think he cheated.
@BenjaminWirtz Because the other guy passed him and took the lead but then when it came his time he won and knocked off the former champ to become champ.
The screen gives it away that everything was on the up and up. He had the beginnings of "Lafayette" on the screen as it apparently malfunctioned, and so since they agreed, I don't see anything wrong. If the screen and the card had disagreed, that would have been a different story, but they agreed.
I don't think it was possible for him to cheat the shows not live so the production crew probably checked that he couldn't write the answer down but wasn't shown on the broadcast version
I say no. Its clear that a card system was in place for the answer to be written. I think him holding up the pen was a signal that something was wrong (for production). Also, he was probably filmed from behind to prevent cheating.
Hey guys. My name is Caroline and I am a twin from Quebec,Canada. I started to make videos and I wanted some opinions. It is my dream to make videos and have some subscribers. If you would encourage me, it would mean a lot! :) Thank you. THUMBS UP THIS COMMENT PLS SO PEOPLE SEE.
Hmm, he wrote everything perfectly clearly on the screen except the answer, claimed a pen malfunction, peeked at the lady's answer as he was getting the card and wrote it down, and won by 2 dollars. Yup, he cheated.
@soccerscholar He was clearly trying to write the answer, he probably couldn't see his own writing and thought his panel wasn't working at all. Notice how this guy was already in the lead. He won by 2 dollars because that is a very obvious betting strategy, he bet just enough to assure he won if he guessed right but gives him the biggest cushion if he guesses wrong.
the pens have done that exact thing on multiple occasions, and they did what they let him do. ive seen people lose and win that way. he didnt cheat, the way the boards are angled, and the blocks on then (read Ken Jennings' Brainiac) it would be IMPOSSIBLE for him to cheat.
the only way this would be considered a "cheat" is because he got about 7-10 seconds extra.
the production staff would check to see if he really couldn't write down the answer. They also watch to be sure that no one is peeking. Remember that the show is not shown "live" and is subject to editing to be presented later. He didn't cheat.
@mcjaywalka uh, it says his pen malfuntioned, he was trying to write lafayette. had a scrible, an "L", an "A" and another letter that could be another "A" or an "F" with a vertifcal stroke next to it.
He clearly did not cheat. You can see he started to write "who is lafayette" but that the writing is off because the pen stopped working. Plus, don't you think they would have checked on it after the show?
He didn't cheat. Wagers are made before the final clue is revealed. He knew how much he had to risk in order to beat the 2nd place guy by $1 if the 2nd place guy risked it all and got it correct.
you write your wager down when you get the clue about the final jeopardy "answer" (that usually takes place before the commercial break). Then after the commercial break they get the "answer" and are allowed time to respond. All he did was write his response, which was "Who is Lafayette"
He cheated by writing an illegible answer, knowing they would have him write the answer on a card, and then got more time to think about the answer. If you notice, he had absolutely NO problem writing his wager down.Hmm...
@gigaman6 right, his "illegible answer" just happened to coincidentally be the exact same letters that the correct answer starts with. Just a really amazing coincidence that he wrote "LAF" and the answer just magically happened to be LAFAYETTE. He's just an amazingly lucky cheater I guess.
Who give a crap about NERDS on this lame game show. Alex Trebex sucks cause he take a easy Q and make into an impossible who cares type of Q that is hard to answer. The guy cheated anyway.
@McStewbeef He wanted there to be enough of a wager so that if the dude to his right bet everything and got it right, he would still win with more money, but not bet too much to risk losing if he got it wrong. Or he just wanted to be a dick to the other guy and beat him by $2.
The letters look funny because he was shaking so much. There was no problem with the pen he was just so nervous he couldn't write. He may not have cheated, however, it was unfair to give him more time than the other contestants.
Immediately after the time limit, before Trebek could even speak, he announced his pen problem. Then Trebek told him to write it on the card, which he promptly did. You can hear the sound of his handwriting, and there was not even the slightest significant moment of "thinking time" that he spent to his advantage. You can also see his attempt at writing with the electronic pen suggests the same answer. So he did not cheat. The game was fair.
how was this cheating. u either know or u dont its not like an additional 5s is gonna give u the answer. this is riduclous. someone report this as scam
I'm not as sure he didn't cheat as others here seem to be. For one, his pen WAS working ("who is" and his wager amount were clear and legible--only his answer was scrawled, and it didn't look like he was initially going to write "Lafayette"). Two, could he see what Melanie wrote, because he *did* look in the direction of her podium? If not, he didn't cheat, BUT if so, a slight upward eye movement, and he'd be able to see her answer. I could be totally wrong, but I'm skeptical.
@wannawatchu66 Well u have to write down the amount first, before u write ur answer, they give u a topic first, then u wager, then they give u the question from tht topic and u write down ur answer, so his pen could have simply given out, notice how weird the letters look?? seems like it was glitching out
@Spulegence Yeah, his pen could've just crapped out on him, but I noticed some things which looked suspect to me. While he was writing his answer on the card, he was right next to the partition separating his and Melanie's podiums, and his eyes were just above the top of it, so the possibility, I believe, was there. But like I said, I'm not saying he *did* cheat, I'm just not dogmatic as so many others here that he didn't, that's all.
@tehnookster A French General who aided General George Washington in America's revolutionay war. I believe he did more than that, but that is what I know him for.
No he didn't cheat. His pen actually wasn't working. Its those damn electronic pens, it has happened to me. I was needed to sign my name onto this gizmo at the bank so it would appear on my card but every time i signed it would just scribble...
No, he was on the right track, but I think his hands were trembling so much that he couldn't write anything legible with the electronic pen, but managed to do better with a regular pen & paper.
I would say no...you can see that he was trying to write Lafayette, and that's the reason they have the cards there. Funny that he wagered only enough to beat the guy next to him by TWO DOLLARS though, lol
@FeFiFoKristen He didn't cheat there. I would've done the same thing wager wise. The guy on the left only had $16,000, and he had $24,600. If the guy on the left wagered everything and got the right answer, then he would have $32,000. He bet only enough to the point where he would still win (even if it was by a slim margine) if he got it right, but he would still come in 2nd if he got it wrong because he would've had $17,199, which was enough to beat the woman on the right.
@CollinLWright42 What in the hell are you talking about!!!!!! The concern was not the wagering it was the pen, and the extra time he had to think of the answer. Yes most of us know about the "Hows" of final jeopardy wagering. Get a clue lady.
@StephenMugsMeyer I realize that almost everyone knows the "how to" on jeopardy wagering. I was just stating to the person I replied to though about what he did. Besides, if you look closely, you can definitely tell that he was writing "Who is Lafayette" on the electronic card.

You can cheat using the pen and paper method.
When you're asked to put your answer on paper just write "Who is".
Once you hear the correct answer from the other participant, you write the answer on the paper moving your hand as little as possible.
Other players can't see you and the host is focusing on the 2nd player.

Weird how his wager was perfectly legible...

@macgregor322 thats because they write the wager before the clue was even said

I'm not as sure he didn't cheat as others here seem to be. For one, his pen WAS working ("who is" and his wager amount were clear and legible--only his answer was scrawled, and it didn't look like he was initially going to write "Lafayette"). Two, could he see what Melanie wrote, because he *did* look in the direction of her podium? If not, he didn't cheat, BUT if so, a slight upward eye movement, and he'd be able to see her answer. I could be totally wrong, but I'm skeptical.

@wannawatchu66 Well u have to write down the amount first, before u write ur answer, they give u a topic first, then u wager, then they give u the question from tht topic and u write down ur answer, so his pen could have simply given out, notice how weird the letters look?? seems like it was glitching out
Spulegence 1 week ago

I was needed to sign my name onto this gizmo at the bank so it would appear on my card but every time i signed it would just scribble...
bk13na 2 weeks ago
No, he was on the right track, but I think his hands were trembling so much that he couldn't write anything legible with the electronic pen, but managed to do better with a regular pen & paper.

Cheater!!!!!!!!
TheRealBrownKid 2 weeks ago
I would say no...you can see that he was trying to write Lafayette, and that's the reason they have the cards there. Funny that he wagered only enough to beat the guy next to him by TWO DOLLARS though, lol

MichiganFann 2 weeks ago
@FeFiFoKristen He didn't cheat there. I would've done the same thing wager wise. The guy on the left only had $16,000, and he had $24,600. If the guy on the left wagered everything and got the right answer, then he would have $32,000. He bet only enough to the point where he would still win (even if it was by a slim margine) if he got it right, but he would still come in 2nd if he got it wrong because he would've had $17,199, which was enough to beat the woman on the right.
CollinLWright42 2 weeks ago
@CollinLWright42 What in the hell are you talking about!!!!!! The concern was not the wagering it was the pen, and the extra time he had to think of the answer. Yes most of us know about the "Hows" of final jeopardy wagering. Get a clue lady.
StephenMugsMeyer 2 weeks ago
@StephenMugsMeyer I realize that almost everyone knows the "how to" on jeopardy wagering. I was just stating to the person I replied to though about what he did. Besides, if you look closely, you can definitely tell that he was writing "Who is Lafayette" on the electronic card.
CollinLWright42 2 weeks ago
He didn't cheat, just pen trouble is all. He had the 1st 3 letters right and you could tell he had a hard time even getting them to appear.
