I used to do this back in grade school all the time. My best friend had never seen nor heard about doing this. We got into a big debate about it in and he bet me some G.I. Joes , that it wasn't true. His jaw dropped when he saw me do it! Didn't take his Joe's, but it was cool showing him something he never seen in gaming. He also already knew about the minus world too. Aaaahh the good old days.

Usually when you're Big/Fire Mario, you would shrink down to small, right? Well, for some reason, it shows the Big Mario tiles instead of the Small Mario ones. The game thinks that you're Small Mario at this point, so when you get a mushroom, it shrinks you down to small. Now it thinks you are Big Mario. You get a Fire Flower and since the game just switches the palette instead of loading new tiles, you turn into Small Fire Mario!

I just discovered the alternate way to get Small Fire Mario,have the Stay Big Code for Game Genie,get hit,then quickly take off the codes and then you got a Smaller Fire Mario but it can only be done on the PlayNES.net version!

I did this on the cartridge version, but I wasn't firery when I hit King Koopa. I was just big, and did the same trick, even beating the game- which unlike what I had a person tell me back in 1988, it does NOT let you pick a level when you beat it as small firery Mario!!

I figured out this bug but instead did it as regular Super Mario hitting the axe and Bowser at the same time. Ends up the same though. I remember bragging to all my friends saying I could get small fire mario, they didn't believe me...and of course I had to spend like an hour to duplicate it to prove it to them. Haha

Also, this is not the American cartridge-based version of Super Mario Bros., it's gameplay from the Japanese Famicom Disk System version.

@TheBakachan I found out this glitch not only works on your version but also on ever NES cartridge-based version of Super Mario Bros even the ports on the Wii Virtual Console and the GBA port too. I made my own video of this off an emulator since I have no capture card to take video from my Wii or NES. Also how do send a video comment I'm kinda new at this and I just uploaded the video.

wait so this is how it normaly goes:

mario + shroom = super mario.

super mario + flower = fire mario.

super and fire mario + damage = mario.

but now its like:

super mario + shroom = mario.

mario + flower = mini fire mario.

mini fire and mini mario + damage = super mario.

but that should also mean:

super mario + damage = mini mario and mini mario + damage = super mario..... i think we are in the face of an anomaly.

yep i remember doing that as well right aroung 88 or 89 i think when we had our 1st nintendo machine. back here in asia it's called nintendo famicom aka family computer. it had a smaller cartridge than the NES. Great Post!

you know, there is 1up iin the begining of 2-2 where the first koopa troopas of world 2 are. after you get the coin just jump on it and jump directly above. then youd get the 1 up mushroom.
