I think I had this on video, but I couldn't quite understand anything going on because I was so young. Now the last minute is just incredibly disturbing to me.
You know, a LOT of people get the relationship between Donald and his nephews very wrong and they don't understand it. It's very heartbreaking! Both of their actions were motivated by love. Donald wanted to teach them to save and boys wanted to surprise him, but they spend so much time playing pranks on each other that they don't really trust each other. Donald himself once said, "I love them but they break my heart" under Ludwig's hypnosis. :(
Donald Duck: (technically) a former Nazi, also was in the US Army, beats the shit out of most of the people that cross him, shoots guns, strangles anger management machines, fixes cars, forces his nephews to smoke cigars. Most badass uncle ever.
My favorite parts of this were when the one trys to stomp it out secretly and donald is like aw no you dont because I always liked to stomp on stuff as a kid espcialy cans and he grabs it and stuffs it back in his bill, and then at the end just stuffs them full of cigars and just pumps the bellows furiously with all his might just like I used to do when I got the oporatunity to play with a set from a fireplace, always thought it was the neatest things the bellows >-< lol
Oh god, the ending is HILARIOUS! Donald tries to give his nephews a "good smoke" lesson, complete with the billow, and then when he finds out the stogies were a birthday present for him, he shrinks because he fells awful for what he did to his nephews!
And it was also one of the many ways cartoons have taught me smoking isn't healthy.
@BokanProductions One I can name off hand was "Cured Duck" where he buys an anger management machine. He's smoking a cigar when he goes to visit Daisy.
Back then, that's how parents raised their kids. Today's a different world, everything is "illegal or incorrect practice". I'm glad my parents belted my backside when i was a kid. I'm glad my dad made me smoke a cigar when i was young and tried stealing one. Today, I don't smoke because of it. Today's kids are handicapped compared to yester-years.
Back then I thought donald was a super mean uncle for treating his nephew like that.. Nevertheless, this episode also made me afraid of cigars as well. so yeah. this episode worked out pretty well for me.
I don't think the Huey=red, Dewey=blue, Louie=green thing was standardized until DuckTales in 1987. Before that, it wasn't consistent. Originally, I think Huey was red, Dewey was orange and Louie was yellow/green, but that wasn't set in stone. And in later films like this one, all three were red, though in comics the colors were sometimes red, yellow and green, sometimes red, green and blue, or something else. Ever since DuckTales, I think it's been consistent everywhere.
@365ral In my family's old collection of classic Disney stuff on (on Beta tape I think) is a copy of Donald's 50th birthday party from 1984 hosted by Dick Van Dyke.
This disturbed me so much as a child. You bunch of sick fucks! What a horrible visual. And do we end with him treating his nephews to a great time? No, it just ENDS. As if to say, you've seen the rape, and that is really all you wanted to see isn't it? Disgusting, absolutely disgusting. What is the point of it? Is it supposed to be funny? Educational? What filth.
@robotpanda77 What does it make disgusting? That donald make them smoke? Well those kids where first smokers so if they smoke alot in first time you feel sick.. i mean really sick... How can you compare this to rape?
@PivotZand This is one of the most vile things I have seen in my life. The idea of donald coming out against them smoking is hypocritical enough. HE SMOKES. It is okay for adults to kill themselves, just not kids I guess. How can he preach about not smoking when he does? And he hurts them as if that was a good way to teach them. What is funny about watching three kind, good intentioned youngsters be hurt so horribly?
@robotpanda77 Never seen donald smoking, and these are the old times. then people didin't know about the dangers of smoking. I see if you find this horrible or something but no need to get butthurt about it, past is in past.
The way he makes them stop here, is a very effective way of stopping them from smoking. Even if it is the "wrong" way of doing it. But again, this was 1949, maybe this was how they did it?
@s1ppr I don't give a damn what time period it was, what he does is wrong and that it is presented as "funny" entertainment is despicable. Even if people were stupid back then they still knew it was wrong to hurt children like that.
Do you think they would smoke more after he did that? Even if he misunderstood. It´s not called hurting children, it´s called strict learning. Hurting children is putting a knife at their throat/beating them while you tell them not to smoke. If you think 1949 was anything like today, you should think again.
I had this cartoon on a video tape when I was a kid-my dad had taped it off the TV. That copy had been edited, though. It was nice to see the whole episode here.
I don't agree with Donald's method to keep the boys from smoking. Letting them try it is a bad idea. It will make them sick, but after that it could make them want to smoke.
Yes, I agree that the ending was disturbing, but I have a question: are Huey, Dewey and Louie orphans or do they only hang out with their uncles Donald and Scrooge? Who are their parents?
@gunman771000 In one cartoon they were Daisy's nephews, not his...but it's mentioned Donald has a sister though we never see her and that's where they come from.
@wlymca I never used to understand any of it as a kid, just like the Swedish chef from the muppets, now that I'm older now I can understand it better though some things still take listening over a few times.
@lifeeconomics812 I don't agree that being distinguishable by red, blue, green is cooler. @topgearfan1234567 But you can enjoy cartoons such as these at any age. These cartoons were meant for general audiences when they were originally released.
Disney made a special of this cartoon. It was a longer version of this cartoon because after Donald forces his nephews to smoke the cigars, he is greeted by his conscience who tells him to do something nice for his nephews. Then Donald shows his nephews several cartoons on a projector. Does anyone know the name of this special?
You're thinking of "Happy Birthday Donald," which was a "Wonderful World of Disney" episode aired in, I think, 1959. Like several other episodes of that period, it took several older cartoons and bridged them together with new linking footage so as to make them all appear to be one big story. The new linking footage (which here included that "conscience" guy) was pretty well done, but sharp-eyed viewers can still pick up when the older footage ends and the new scenes start.
