This has always been my favorite Christmas song and I searched for 30 years for someone who could sing it with heart and soul and punch it out in the right parts..Then someone told me about David Phelps. He makes me cry every single time I hear it.. And I've watched it over 2,000 times on my Gaither Christmas dvd from the 90's. Thank you David for bringing me closer to GOD.
I watched the greats.... Mario Lanza, Caruso, Pavarotti........ Beautiful voices but nothing like this. This is proof that talent, skill, and training are no match for the anointing!
Hands down, his best version of this song and best performance in general probably ever recorded. It's flawless and I don't think you can do it any better than that. not to mention the pianist the icing on the cake
Yes, I cry every time too. Amazing...truly amazing. What astounds me is the HUMILITY he expresses (check out 4:41) even though ANYONE would be blessed to hear him perform!
Who said the piano was too much?! I thought it was rather tame...but in a good way. You can't have an awesome vocal performance like that with timid accompaniment, the two have to have balance and they are perfectly coordinated in this performance. I can tell you from experience that people want more emphatic accompaniment with their music as this is what often sets the tone for the whole song. Trust me, my mother has been playing for over 50 years, she knows what the people like.
an earlier commenter said"God must be pleased too". well Zephaniah 3:17 says "He (God wil joy over thee with singing" the meaning being that when our God and Lord thinks of us He experiences such joy that He sings....I believe this song the nght that David sang it was so marvelous because it was a duet between David and God!
Wonders if the 9 dislikes have hearing problems! And I love watching the guy's response behind David's right shoulder at 3:34 ... awesome song, delivery, and above all --- MESSAGE!
I just want to listen over and over !!! WOW! I cant believe people can sing so wonderfully to our Savior..can you imagine what it will be like in heaven when he becomes perfected? im in awe
Honestly sung from his heart, he feels every word and is singing to people who feel it too,its not commercial its real how can his performance be judged the man is amazing in his own right.
I truly hope that no one tries to dignify your comment concerning David Phelps with an answer, shawnuel. It's evident that you don't know the annointing when you hear it!! And the comment about Anthony Berger..this man was blessed to even be able to use his hands period..if not for God, he would never had been able to use them again after having an accident when he was a youngster.
@sleepytimegalz I showed this video to several friends of mine who all thought the piano accompaniment was WAY too much. I agree that Berger is a great player but he should be serving a song and a singer here, not be the focus of the song.. Geeez, because I don't like something other people like doesn't make me a heathen, undignified or an idiot. I gave a pretty clear reason why. To me, simplicity is almost always more emotionally compelling than bombast. Lets agree to disagree peaceably.
I know his voice is great.....but it feels like he is trying to sell me a used car. And that Piano accompaniment. Like using a sledge hammer to pound in a thumb tack. Simplify folks.
How on Earth does a performance such as this one receive 9 dislikes? I wish I could get into the nine's heads and dissect what in the world were they thinking? Also I notice on almost every great performer's video there will be a comparison to another performer. I propose it will help you enjoy great music if you leave the "comparison-card" in the car. Wouldn't we enjoy great music more if we just sit and receive the blessing? Ooops just fell off my soap box, it must be time to wrap it up.

@TacticalBartowski Yes, I agree with you. What makes this magnificent music, is the simple fact believe what David says, and really believe in this saying.
@scoota106 Hobson's voice lacks depth and fullness. He also tends to sing flat. Check out his video on here singing this and he's flat all over the place. His high notes pale in comparison to David Phelps.
It's so amazing how can a boice bring some tears to my eyes like that, how can a man be so blessed. God gave him a gift, and he's using that gift as just as GOD want, to exalt His glorious name. This video just cuts me to the core. This man believes every word and declares it. "Chains He shall break, for the slave he is our brother, and in His Name all oppression shall cease!" YES! I'm not really a fan of over-the-top Christian/Christmas specials and all that kind of thing, but THIS is a spiritual experience!
I have tried to sing like him and it is very difficult and a great strain on my voice, HE trully has a God given talent. I thank Him of Praising Our Lord with his wonderful voice,
@ChaseTheMusical Read the post from chuckklm3 up there... I think that evidence is irrefutable. He doesn't shout in every song he sings, but this one he for sure does.
@stowe2546 He's on pitch for sure. I never argued that. But he's still shouting. Go and youtube David Phelps High Notes. Every song sounds the same because he just goes up to his high register and belts it. I'm just kinda over it really. It's like, "Hey I'm David Phelps, here come my high notes! AGAIN!" It's pretty crazy because in this video specifically, even though he's somewhat overweight, you can still see his veins popping out because he's straining so much...
@emmcclelland With all due respect, Pavarotti was quoted as saying 'singing is controlled yelling'. This man would not be able to sing and maintain those hight notes if he were straining all the time. He knows exactly what he's doing and knows his audience. He's a brilliant singer who knows how to use his instrument and what his audience wants to hear. Bravo to him for being a GREAT singer! Respectfully.
This song is even more moving in person. I saw the Gaithers Christmas concert in person when I was about 15. I can only wish I had really been able to appreciate it at the time. Even then though, David's singing stopped me in my tracks and made me cry.
The vocal performance is so astonishingly good that the gorgeous playing of Anthony Berger is sometimes forgotten. God really did bless both of these men with amazing talent.
I discovered this 2 years ago.and it set off a true and deep astonishment with David's voice. I don't know if another singer with such a pure, clear and inspiring voice. He has truly had an impact on my life ! When I feel lost, sad or lonely, his songs lift me up and bring a joy to my life that is unlike any form of other healing ! He definitely has a gift from God, and I am so thankful he shares it with the world ! Thanks David !
This is excessively theatrical and he takes liberties with the text. Extraordinary upper range, but I prefer Bjoerling's tone and technique, among others.
Someone else posted this also, and blocks any comments that are not effusive praise.
You know so much, and yet here you are on youtube. What was the point of your comment? Do you think David Phelps will hear and think about your critique? Your comment does nothing but annoy people who are watching in appreciation. Think about your words.
Beautiful rendition of O Holy Night, one of my favorite Christmas songs. Other different but beautiful versions I have found are Nsync's acapella version, which surprised me but is quite good. And Australian singer Anthony Callea's version which is quite beautiful - gorgeous voice. They are worth checking out if you love this song.
Great how some of you turn what is quite possibly the most moving display of Christian praise into an argument about religion, pop-culture and who means it more. Nothing else in life matters than the greatfulness we feel and the thanks we give to our Lord for the blessings He has given us.
David Phelps is amazing on this one! Bone chilling, a blessed gift of a voice. I have yet to hear anyone belt this one better than he can. Very few can hit those octave notes. And, not to mention, a very nice guy!
Such an amazing performance from a man with an amazing voice and talent. No matter what religion you may believe in, you should be able to agree with that.
@wctrmpt I've never heard this song sang better than David did it. He is an incredible first tenor, and i was practically lifted into the air listening to him sing it. Just incredible, best yet!!!
Funny how muslims never seem to create music or anything of such beauty. Lets hope christianity remains strong in the civilised world and doesn't give in to other religions trying to enforce their beliefs upon them.
Webersheep, by virtue of being a Christian, I have all faith in, not just my God, but the God of gods and the Lord of Lords being able to bless everyone. Even those that choose not to believe in him. You see, my God's power does not require my faith. However, my faith does require him.
thegetman101 - by virtue of being a Muslim, I have faith in, not just Allah, but Allah being able to bless everyone. Even those that choose not to believe in him. You see, Allah's power does not require my faith, but my faith does reuire him. -- Im not actually a muslim, but just wanted to prove that what you said means nothing, anyone can write that about their own God/Gods/spirits....etc
@webersheep - You know, webersheep, I would agree with you but theres a problem with your statement. First, Allah isn't real, so therefore he can't bless anyone or anything; as to where my God, who is The King of Kings and The Lord of Lords, is can bless people because he was alive, is alive, and will be alive for evermore and secondly, I would have to agree with thegetman101. Thank you and God Bless.
@rescued1817 There's a problem with your theory rescued 1817, your God 'the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings,' isn't real, so therefore he can't bless anyone or anything, as to where my God, Allah, can. Allah is alive for evermore. ** Once again, so so so easy to write a bunch of bs. You've only proven that you're not very bright. Its okay though, everyone has their shortcomings
Well then, you can enjoy your god (lowercase is not a mistake) that sees suicide bombing, and a general disrespect for women as viable ways of life, and I will enjoy mine that doesn't.
Isn't it funny how people who adore "Allah" are so quick to try and stomp out anyone else's God of choice and so quick to toss around the word infidel, then cry inequality if anyone doesn't agree with them? Complete lunatics, all of you.
I think I would pay $1,000.00 right now just to speak with someone intelligent. I do NOT believe in Allah, I have already mentioned that. I was making a point of how easy it is just to write about how MY god is the correct one, and YOUR god is not. Everyone thinks that THEIR god is the true one, and everyone else is wrong. Wow how unique of you to think that YOUR god is the real one, what's your secret? That was sarcasm by the way.

haha, Mark Lowry he was imitating Anthony Burger on the piano, bending over and acting like he was pounding on the piano. The camera always seems to catch him doing the strangest things....lol
That guy you are refering to is Mark Lowry. He has an incredibly high admiration of David Phelp's singing and at that point in the performance, Mark was unable to hold back the emotion he felt from such an amazing display of talent.
the authority and power of God hits me every time he sings, "in His name, all oppression shall cease" no other singer outside of the christian realm can have the force and true meaning behind the words like this guy can.... : ) love it! love the piano playing, sad he passed away....
By the way, for all those ignorant people who say his talent is a gift from god, what do you say when someone of a different religion is talented? or an atheist is talented? Open your eyes. The stupidity of people never ceases to amuse me :)
Wow do you know absolutely anything about what you just said? First....the vast majority of religion in the world believes in the same god/creator, therefore your point about other religions makes no sense. Second... god gives talent and gifts to everyone.... See what you were trying to do was remove god from a situation that required god to make a point.
um no, sorry. All religions do NOT all worship the same God, read a book genius. And I also mentioned atheists, do they worship the same God too? Idiot. Point is, if there is a talented singer, the person hearing is going to credit THEIR God with that talent. Well I believe that I am God, so I am actually responsible for this talented singer. You're welcome. I hope you're smart enough to get the point and not take that literally.
@webersheep Sorry to bust your bubble but no your not. There is only one God and creater. One day you will find out and wish that you lived your llife for Him.
If there was some kind of benevolent being who created the earth and the heavens do you really think with the knowledge and wisdom a being that hass the power to create whole universes as well as destroy them really as petty as to send somebody to eternal damnation if they dont follow the rules written in a book that was prolly written by sum crazy guy 2000 years ago. Or would he be humbled at how his creations took on minds of there own and questioned the world around them. u fag
Um, Yes, God has set rules, they are called the Commandments. They are not to be followed exactly, as humans we can't. We are going to break them. That is why he sent his son Jesus. There was thousands of years of humans on the Earth before Jesus. After Jesus is when it became possible for humans to live, sin, and be forgiven of those sins. Jesus lead a perfect life. He is and will be the only human to do it.
God influenced men to write the Bible, I wouldn't call them crazy.
@colekrieger69 This is completly inappropriate. You should just enjoy the music, rather then use this as a platform to bash people who believe in Divine creation. This is not the place for that.
@webersheep I don't care what religion or antheist or not, God created everything and gave everybody the talents they have whether people CHOOSE to believe it or not. If you would blow the dust off your Bible( if you have one) and open it and start reading it, then you might know what I'm talking about.
This is truly a man who loves Christ just the way he sings it you can tell. God bless you David you simply sing this song the best. God bless all and a Merry Christmas.
That has got to be the best "O Holy Night" done by a male singer, David P. OMJ! Those notes.......THOSE HIGH C # NOTES!! He must have the ability to sing 5 octaves. He can definitely hold his own with Celine, Whitney, and Younger Mariah.
Then I stand corrected. Did not know that Mariah professed a relationship with God. But I know David has as I have been to a couple of his Concerts and have heard him proclaim his faith in person.
He sings with the Gaither Vocal Band...probably the best Southern Gospel groups ever. You can see his love of God in his face when he sings. His voice is truly a gift from God.

@emmcclelland No. No one feels like he is just shouting.

@ChaseTheMusical Read the post from chuckklm3 up there... I think that evidence is irrefutable. He doesn't shout in every song he sings, but this one he for sure does.

@emmcclelland shouting? Like, right on pitch (high C#) kind of shouting? Near perfect vocal performance kind of shouting? Yeah, then I guess so.
stowe2546 1 year ago

Someone else posted this also, and blocks any comments that are not effusive praise.
unc7480 2 years ago

-- Im not actually a muslim, but just wanted to prove that what you said means nothing, anyone can write that about their own God/Gods/spirits....etc
webersheep 2 years ago 2
@webersheep - You know, webersheep, I would agree with you but theres a problem with your statement. First, Allah isn't real, so therefore he can't bless anyone or anything; as to where my God, who is The King of Kings and The Lord of Lords, is can bless people because he was alive, is alive, and will be alive for evermore and secondly, I would have to agree with thegetman101. Thank you and God Bless.
rescued1817 1 year ago
@rescued1817 There's a problem with your theory rescued 1817, your God 'the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings,' isn't real, so therefore he can't bless anyone or anything, as to where my God, Allah, can. Allah is alive for evermore. ** Once again, so so so easy to write a bunch of bs. You've only proven that you're not very bright. Its okay though, everyone has their shortcomings
webersheep 1 year ago
@webersheep

The piano player passed away? When?
sonnymayer 2 years ago
the authority and power of God hits me every time he sings, "in His name, all oppression shall cease" no other singer outside of the christian realm can have the force and true meaning behind the words like this guy can.... : ) love it! love the piano playing, sad he passed away....
BradRM12 2 years ago
By the way, for all those ignorant people who say his talent is a gift from god, what do you say when someone of a different religion is talented? or an atheist is talented? Open your eyes. The stupidity of people never ceases to amuse me :)
webersheep 2 years ago
Wow do you know absolutely anything about what you just said? First....the vast majority of religion in the world believes in the same god/creator, therefore your point about other religions makes no sense. Second... god gives talent and gifts to everyone.... See what you were trying to do was remove god from a situation that required god to make a point.
terps252006 2 years ago 3
um no, sorry.

Or would he be humbled at how his creations took on minds of there own and questioned the world around them. u fag
colekrieger69 1 year ago
@colekrieger69
God influenced men to write the Bible, I wouldn't call them crazy.
whitetruck76 1 year ago
@colekrieger69 This is completly inappropriate. You should just enjoy the music, rather then use this as a platform to bash people who believe in Divine creation. This is not the place for that.

@webersheep I don't care what religion or antheist or not, God created everything and gave everybody the talents they have whether people CHOOSE to believe it or not. If you would blow the dust off your Bible( if you have one) and open it and start reading it, then you might know what I'm talking about.

That has got to be the best "O Holy Night" done by a male singer, David P. OMJ! Those notes.......THOSE HIGH C # NOTES!! He must have the ability to sing 5 octaves. He can definitely hold his own with Celine, Whitney, and Younger Mariah.
QuietStormMan 2 years ago 9
His known vocal range spans from E2 to F5. Not five octaves, but he's still the best!

E2 to F5? Is that above a "C5"?
