Gilbert, Portnoy and Co. Are keeping this great music alive just like their other side projects, Yellow Matter Custard (Fantastic Beatles Tribute), Hammer Of The Gods (Led Zeppelin Tribute), Sigmund And The Sea Monster (Rush Tribute) and this band. Their love of this music shows all current talentless noise makers that musicianship is key and songwriting is essential to creating something great and timeless. Thank you boys!
Who could possibly have a complaint about this? Who fans don't come bigger than me, and there's nothing wrong with knowing what all four guys did: that the Who was more than the sum of their parts, they were a magic alchemy. These three musicians are all technically better than the Who, but they're paying tribute--and falling JUST SHORT of that signature Who sound--for a reason. That was magic. This is just incredible talent paying homage to legends--aka bliss.
I think what some people are missing here is that this act isn't here to mimic the Who as closely as possible. They want to honor the Who by a mix of their own styles and the Who. For example also Mike Portnoy dressed like Keith and acted liked him he didn't go out of his way to get a Premier kit instead of a Tama. But I loved his drumming, especially in Sparks it's just so smooth yet aggressive. They all did a good job.
@RemoteControlband well I kind of know what you mean, that was never Townshend's style but he could shred it up every now and then, just in smaller bursts. There's at the end of Magic Bus on Live at Leeds for example which melts your face.
it's mike portnoys project and tribute who dudes. mike can and will put acts together and perform with sheehan and gilbert and cherone who eddie van halen says is very very good...live. mike is currently one of the most influential music personalities in the world...drummers unite. check out his rush, beatles and zepplin bands or any dream theater.
@madshadows830 ... Ha-ha. The drummer is Mike Portnoy. Widely hailed as one of the greatest, technically gifted living percussionists. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of his drumming in Dream Theater but, comparatively, he's "dumbing it down" here ... and purposefully incorporating a few of Moon's goofy physical quirks.
Come on. Anyone playing in a rock Band? Anyone, then, have been trying to cope with this song? Seriously this is hard stuff. Instead of being harsh on them, then instead enjoy the compassion, because these musicians are very skilled and just play this as a tribute to some of the best rock music ever made. Besides this, they have their own projects.
In essence, this the drummers tribute to rock'n'roll, since without proper drum playing this song won't work. Or the guitar. Or the bass. Thumbs up.
They all deserve credit. But since the drummer and guitarist are visually representing The Who and the others aren't, in some shots, it's like two members of The Who are jamming with two other guys.
The singer's voice, albeit good, lacks the power and the thrust of Daltrey's voice. The bassist played well, but Entwistle was never this animated. The drummer kicks serious ass here, the way Moon and all other real rock drummers know how to do.
All in all, please give this band credit for keeping the spirit alive. I wouldn't mind watching one of their shows.
You are so right about Keith Moon in every way. Great tribute man. I saw The Who back in the late seventies a few times and you do a pretty decent Keith Moon. He is certainly the most unique drummer to have ever lived. You guys are def good. Fabulous choice of songs and the clothes are pretty accurate for the times also... kudos gentleman.........
@WelshVegan Hey the welsh vegan gets it right.......portnoy sounds good but it is by the numbers.........vegan is in the ZONE ................see vegans vid decide for yourself
If I was the producer, I'd suggest the guitarist not to shred. Then I'd suggest the bass player not to shred. And I'd take away all that "metal-esque" low end in the drums, although his playing is very nice and not overdone. Paul Gilbert also needs a fuzz, come on? He's using modern gain for a classic rock sound...
This is as good as a Who tribute band gets...however during the solo section they almost needed to dumb it down a bit more..no insult to Pete and John's abilities but Paul and Billy's solos were more advanced than they should have been.
Nobody can replace Keith Moon, it's like replacing the Sun! But I think that Portnoy did a helluva job on this, since Moonie's drum style was unorthodox, to say the least! I knew Keith briefly when I was really underaged --hardly could keep up with him and I was like, 15! But he did magical things with his drum kit, and was proud of his abilities
Outstanding! I have been a Who fan for 40+ years and listen to them all the time, this is a brilliant cover I struggled to find any gremlins in the pearformance at all, well done you chaps keep doing as you do......................
The sense of a tribute is not to "copy" band but to show other artists respect. Mike admits himself that he wasn't able to give a perfect moon imitation although he did it very well.
This has to be the most talent in one group I've ever seen. Cherone gets a bad rap for the Van Halen days but he has a great voice. Gilbert,Portnoy,Sheehan all can be considered at the top of their instruments of which they play.
Agh! Stop Shredding! Paul Gilbert is an amazing guitarist and can play anything but I don't think that style of playing suits these songs. It actually takes away from the magic of the rest of the music.
Really cool. Question to Mike Portnoy -- how (or did) you handle the songs where Keith led with his left foot whilst adding the extra beats with his right before returning to a right foot lead on the bass drums? I can't imagine seeing a trained drummer trying it, but...?
yeah i've been wondering that myself. it would be difficult for a trained drummer to really get the handle of that style of playing,
on two side notes i think its funny that you can tell that mike is trying very hard to do the bare minimum of showman style that keith did so he doesn't tire out. ha. and it seems like if you watch the IOW show keith has the same kit but mike just dwarfs this one where keith looked like just a little guy next to it.
Watching again !!!!...man !!! this is seriously friggin awesome !!!...a modern edge that just makes The Who's music that much cooler !!! FAWK !!!...this lineup blows any WHO tribute band out of the water !!...dont get me wrong...there are a few that are good(Bargain, The Wholigans)...but the real lousy tribute bands should take notice !!and learn...This is WICKED !!..every one of these pros are damn great !!
Where are the double-speed Moon fills? See me doing Sparks. I am only using one kick and one cymbal. Post me a comment letting me know what you think. Thanks :)
See The Who @ Live at Isle of Wight Festival 1970. That was THE concert. This is a sort of "hey guys, look how fast play". No mood, only technical stuff.... sadness..........
Great job Mike! Gave me chills down my spine......Thanks for keeping Keith and this music alive, especially with all the terrible music out there these days!
Not many big flamboyant ones in that song, no. There were a lot of little nuances in the style, and the one stick throw, though. Still, that song was an earlier one in the performance. As it got later in he became a lot more crazy, like Moon. By the end of the show he completely obliterated the drum kit. I was there.
