Do anybody tell me about Art Pepper's Alubum? I am looking for the tiltle "Gerogea on my mind" by Art Pepper with 7 members session. I heard it about 40 years ago on FM redio.
So many great players who never got the attention they deserved, Art Pepper, Sonny Stitt, Tubby Hayes, Ahmed Jamal etc etc. I wonder why some players just seem to catch a commercial wave and some equally good players just fade into memory? The sheer output of Sonny Stitt was amazing, he never stopped working or recording prolifically but Charlie Parker is the name most people would recognize. It's strange.
DRUGS.i sometimes wonder what the likes of art .charlie parker bill evans would have played like without them.we will never know.they all turned out giants anyway.lucky for us.this albumn is tops many thanks.
I read his autobiography "The Straight Life" and had to go out and get this album. I was traveling in New Orleans at the time and searched in this little record store devoted to blues and jazz. I found it and as I was paying for it the little old guy behind the counter who was owner of the store looked up at me and said, This is the best record in the whole store" I could tell he meant it.
wow amazing, i bought this vinl when it was released but over the years lost it ! Its just as amazing now as in the 60's .. wicked .. jazz as it should be .. lyrical, exciting and so cool !
What a brilliant player Art Pepper was. Lots of bad habits, but such sweet music. I need to find "Art Pepper Plus Eleven' after hearing this..my introduction to the man in the 60's. Thanks for this!
anyone into art pepper's playing should read his autobiography, straight life. the circumstances surrounding this recording are particulary out there.
he only found out about the session on the morning of the date, had been laid out for weeks in East LA on a heroin binge and had hardly played in weeks. totally unprepared, he fixed himself up and played this recording more like a jam session, and somehow what came out was one the greatest jazz albums of the 1950's.
@SANNAFABICH sorry to say it but you are very judgemental and small minded if you think like that. great artists are often flawed people in many ways. you are clearly pretty flawed yourself, but probably dont see it through the fog of your own self-rightousness...
This was one of the most influential recordings of the time. Art Pepper, a West Coaster, fit seamlessly with the Miles Davis rhythm section that just killed. They had little contact before the record, but you wouldn't know that from the result. Just spectacular.
oh, the original engineers, specifically who, I would have to look up. Reminds me of my album "Two Of A Mind" with Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond. One is hard panned left and the other right. Don't know why, just sounds cool as heck
@ModernSaxDotCom - my bad, ModernSax - was thinking of 'panned' in as a reviewers term...I'm unfamiliar with recording jargon - thanks for the reply :-)
God have mercy, his phrasing just kills me dead! Like Clifford Brown and most Sonny Rollins I just can't get enough.

@IndependentGeorge76 Exactly, I love how he gradually gains his confidence back and plays with such amazing authority toward the end.
