Sunk deep in the night I sink in the night Standing alone underneath the sky I feel the chill of ice On my face I watch the hours go by The hours go by... You sleep Sleep in a safe bed Curled and protected Protected from sight Under a safe roof Deep in your house Unaware of the changes at night At night I hear the darkness breathe I sense the quiet despair Listen to the silence At night Someone has to be there Someone has to be there
Simon is so cool :D Especially at the end when he's dancing in front of that big spotlight and all you can see is his sillhouette and shadows. This video is great, it's got such an atmospheric feel to it from the grainyness and the fact that it's in black and white.
haha yeah man I worked nights for two months and during the weekends I'd be up all night listening to the japanese whispers album and the top, it's an experience like no other waking up in the evening going to bed in the morning and being wide awake alone all night i'll never forget it.
i think simon played a major role regarding the early years of the cure. since they didn't have a 2nd guitar player he played solos ('3 imaginary boys') and intros/outros ('10.15') on his bass. he was multitasking on 'at night' and 'cold' and played keyboards on 'pornography'. on 'the hanging garden' it's the best bassline ever!
Simon is an awesome bassist! And he did play a major roll in early Cure... but he didn't join till 'Seventeen Seconds'. The albums before that were Michael Dempsey. I didn't wanna be rude if I was.. just wanted to tell you. =D
at first i didn't like 'at night' at all! actually i really hated it. i always skipped it when listening to '17 seconds' and i couldn't understand why they played it so often instead of 'secrets'. but since i saw this video i really love the song because of simon's multitasking with bass and keyboard.
This version amazes me each time I listen to it. I remember the gig at Wembley Arena in 2008 when they played this song. It was the start of their 17 Seconds Encore (their first set of encores). The blue lights flashing on Simon gave a very surreal effect!
17 seconds can last forever... I listened to this song on a hot summer night, walking in a desert street of London. Since then, I felt I could better understand them. Marvelous song. Tnks
Wow! This is absolutely amazing. Initially I thought who was playing the keyboard because The Cure at this time turned out to be a three-piece band after Mathieu Hartley, their keyboardist left in 1980. Then on close observation, I saw Simon playing both the bass and keyboard on this track! Pretty good work, I must say.
I think Franz Kafka covered this song.

@novembrine1 : Ahead of what? It is great music made in the right decade. The melancholie reflects perfect the mood of the early eighties.

No, being 1981, I think they were ahead of all their peers

Simon just like Severin (Banshees) were`nt typical bass players..They had a unique style of playing the instrument.
It was something in between rhythm guitar & bassguitar.
warminator 2 years ago
And yes, Simon had to juggle with the bass and keyboards at the same time...and yet he could still find time to dance.

Robert, Simon & Lol rocks! Lol is even doing some nice work with his cymbals.
Jason should listen to early Cure recordings and try to replicate the drum sounds and the drum arrangements.

Everybody knows it doesn't get much better than 80s' Cure. Who says otherwise lies, or doesn't count.
