@MrB0TT With my honda 2200 watt i have an outlet outside that runs to a two way switch on the oil & wood furnace . I have a short three foot long male to male power cord to connect between the outdoor outlet and the generator so it's never live unless the generator is plugged in. I don't need to open a window especially at -30c The two way witch switches between main power and generator power to the furnace. Using #12 electrical cable is more efficient.
@Terratracks The generator outlet and connection indoors is isolated from the main grid power. You can install a relay that switches form grid to generator, but to be honest i would rather do it manually (switch) myself. Just in case the relay blows and shorts out.
Here's my problem. You're losing alot with such long lines (resistance) and in a real life scenario, EVERYONE and your grandmother, and your friend's grandmothers are going to be sitting in line for gasoline IF IT'S EVEN AVAILABLE. I would invest in a very good solar powered chrgd generator, seriously. The gas is fine in theory, but when the SHTF, you are not going to want to rely on gasoline. It's coming too.
Yes Solar is good if you don't live in Northern Canada when it's dark for most of the day 6+ months of the year. I install solar kits and keeping the panels clear of snow and ice is several times a day job. You need a-lot of 2vDC DD batteries to make it worth the effort.
More efficient solar cells do exist but the oil magnas won't allow them to be sold to the public. People want to change but no one is letting them.
@markelliotkorn. You are incorrect. Adding a second generator wired in PARALLEL doubles the amperage AND WATTAGE. Remember Volts x Amps = Watts. Increase te amos on a 120v circuit, you naturally increase the wattage.
I have two Hondas and one big Subaru genny for the house. Anybody that tries to steal my generator during a "disaster" is getting a shit load of bullets first from my many assault weapons and 4 sons!
If you add a second generator you do not get 4000; you simply increase the amperage. Why not just get a transfer switch installed in place of your stock circuit breaker? With all the things you purchased - the transfer switch will have load meter also.
listen it easier and simpler if you just plug an 6 to 8000 invertor or generator into any house outlet or the power grid near your electric meter and you have power all around ..., try it. All the wires are not needed and you can use them for something else. Reasoning being there will no power and it will work .Plus even with normal power you are sub-supply the extra power into your power grid and lower your electric bill..tooo.

Backfeeding Can Be Dangerous if done improperly! Done properly it will pass code and is safe. If you do it without isolating the grid from your generator by turning off the Main Breaker or Breakers in your panel - you could kill or injure people working on the power lines outside of your home. Once the 220V from your generator hits the nearest transformer it gets "transformed" to higher voltages and ZZZZZAAAAAPPPP! some poor sucker doesn't get to go home to his family that night.
See, the problem is with all gas generators is that they all make noise. In a shtf situation you want to be incognito and as quiet as possible. When choosing a alternate electrical powersource you have to go with either a hydro, solar, or wind turbine generator or your going to attract unwanted attention. They make little to no noise at all. Even if you plan to run the gas generator indoors the next thing your going to deal with is the carbon monoxide produced from the generator.
All power will attract unwanted attention. You have a solar setup? I am sure your neighbors will take note. You have a wind turbine? People will see it. Your lights on when everyone else is in the dark? You might as well build a soundproof box for your generator.
you should maybe think about getting solar panels its way better kuz if something were to happen you will run out of gas Most of my house is powered by solar
@OUtsidethenine4eva YOU CANNOT USE STRAIGHT VEGETABLE OIL IN A DIESEL ENGINE! It has to be processed to be usable in a diesel engine. That is why they call it bio-diesel, not vegetable oil!
catexan 2 months ago
i don`t want to upset you , but you can run any diesel engine on veg oil , ive been running my landrover on it for about 3 years and other than swapping the fuel filter more opften, it runs fine just remeber in winter to add 50% diesel
so your willing to shoot those that come to steal your gear and fuel right? also where will you get wood from if you get a wood burning stove? I really only ask these things since I've lived off the road system in Alaska for 5 years and I really know what it means to live without power and a steady fuel & food supply. I've also used that Honda 2000 to power things in my house out there in conjunction with solar and it burns more fuel then your expecting just so you know.
Real nice job on this video from end to end as a demonstration!
You've given me a couple of ideas on how to re-configure our setup so I don't have to rely on our big DeWalt Generator if I want to use our Honda 2000i unit instead.
Make sure you pull your meter from the wall when you turn that generator on so you dont back feed thru the utility transformer outside your home on the pole. You will Zap the Utility Company Lineman trying to get power to your home/neighborhood. The turn Ratio on the utility transformer is around 31.75 (7620/240). Your generator at 120V * 31.75 = 3,810 Volts you will Zap him with BE CAREFUL......
Very nice video. You should buy the theft deterrent brackets for the EU2000i AND put a piece of metal inside the handle. Good luck trying to cut through the handle. Your setup is impressive but if the power outage lasts for more than a few days, someone WILL try to steal your generator. Since you can't watch it 24/7, this is the way to go.
Consider getting a diesel generator instead. You can run it on straight vegetable oil which is cheaper, safer, and easier to stock up on. You might find that you set yourself up for much more than twenty days with a diesel running on fry oil.

Couple things- you have gone so far, why stop at exension cords? You could put an isolation xfer switch on the outside for the price of all those extensions cords and its way cleaner that all those cords strung all over the place, safer and more efficient. Also the hond eu2000 will not Run 26 hours on one gallon I t will run around 12 I have one myself and the same Moeller external tank. angyals 269's comments about the honda being loud are laughable, you dont know what you are talking about.
Thanks for posting this stuff as well as you wordpress blog.. I am now a new fan.. I luv your ideals and principles as well as sharing a bit of knowledge with others. We are so so out of touch of making it on our own if we have to... Thanks for instilling a bit of the pioneer spirit as well as adventure.
In SHTF, you should use your solar panels before you draw all that attention to yourself with those noisy generators. You have a Mossberg and other guns but that wont hold off an armed gang, who are hungry, and know that you probably have food if you have a generator. If they can't shoot you out they'll burn you out... better to just go incognito with Solar Panels.
It's me again...I like the furnace set up. It would be easy enough to run a cord to the sump pump, problem solved. Run the furnace when you need to, then shut it off, unplug it and plug the sump pump in for a cycle. Go Vikes...
That generator is loud as hell, it's a beacon to the world saying "I have gas and possibly other supplies, please rob me". I hope you have an agreement with your neighbors to team against looters.
@Angyal269 The generator sounded loud on the video because the video camera was so close to it. I have the same generator, and the exhaust from my neighbor's furnace is louder. If I run the Honda behind my house, you can't hear it from the curb. Anyone who hasn't heard it for themselves doesn't have a clue.
You dont want to have that coil of wire where you hook in to the furnace, You will draw more current using more energy from your generator plus run the risk of melting the power cord in to a mass of gook and causing a fire.
Have you thought about converting it to run on Propane? Best thing I ever did. You will never gum up the valves and it is infinitely safer to store large amounts of propane than 5 gallons of gas. Plus propane never goes bad so you dont have the hassle of rotating expensive premium gas. For what you have invested in the metal Jerry Cans, you could have had a 420# propane tank. You can get big tanks that you can bury too.
@csiebert2 I was looking at the converter kits available for them. I think they had a multi-fuel kits also. Our city won't let I do anything with our land (tanks). But personal property rights is another topic.
after watch the entire video, you would be way ahead of the game converting it to a trifuel set up. Since you have Natural Gas, thats the way to go.
Our city has issues with propane tanks too but its so easy to disguise a 100# or even a 420# tank :).
I just from experience, its a real hassle rotating gas and filling up the truck every single night on the way help. Plus the cost of the metal cans is out of site. If we had Natural Gas, I'd be doing that.
@csiebert2 Liquid Propane loses its ability to form gas under frigid conditions. If it's winter time in Minnisota for example. A burried tank would probably be fine though.
@MrB0TT that is a pain about the vapor pressure at low temperatures. I have found that ganging tanks together works pretty good. I gang 4 100#ers together and that works really good. but then again Gasoline and Diesel are worse at the temperatures that would cause propane to not have enough vapor pressure assuming 80% full tanks. A buried tank would really be nice. I wish I could get a backhoe up to my place :).
Don't beleive the hype - if you do get your 2000i started.. lol (as mine doesn't) at full throttle you will burn 9.7 gal per 24 hrs. (Eco off) & at 400 watts about 6 hrs. max! (Eco mode btw has a tendency to gum up the valves so I'd refrain to use it) otherwise great setup!
