I have a big question about tuning a piano, some firends of mine were arguing with me today about a piano can be tuned by using a guitar, though i found it hard to believe, i would like to know if this is true. can anyone help me?
It says in a website of piano tuning that if a piano hasn't been tuned for a couple of years. You would need to tune your a piano for a lot of times. When did you last tune your piano?
@pianopam1 Well the last time I have had it tuned was when this video was made and it is badly needing one again so I will be calling the same man to come do it again, but before that it had been probably 10 years. Thanks
haha... nice video I love it.. a piano tuner is tuning the piano for me now...I'm watching this and looking at the piano tuner at home at the same time ...
I just used a gstring tuner on an android droid incredible to check his tuning by ear skills. This gentleman is tuning a piano to perfection with no electronics! Check it yourself and you will see. What ever you paid him was not enough :)
Pianotec want to save thier business, of course. As an engineer (in electronics) and as a piano player/lover I think that this kind of instrument definitely can't be accurately "tuned". This expression means nothing, because the tuning of a piano is so much a compromise....
Anyway, the one shown here sounds really flat, out of "musical tune"!
qlet, your piano see to have very tight pins but to be tuner with mùore precision it may be tunerd more often.
If I where in the situation of that tunert, tuning 4 to 6 pianops a day, I would use minimal efforst and dont mind about the long term and precision. That is what happens most hgenerally , and people play pianos that are "more or less" in tune. There is always abonus to the one sthat does it regularely - yja,ls for the film
If we wher tuning with stability customers would call us every 3-4 years, better do a 45 minutes cheap job , earn money and make everyone happy (just joking !)
@flippy : well slight misunderstanding. The pins are not bend by the tuner they are tense because they are twisted in the block and kept that wya with the string pressure (taht is the only "secret" of pin settling. The more deep in the block the twist is the more strong the setting (and the most clear the tone, also)
Machines are machines they can provide some information, they cant do the job, they cant hear musically (and they slow you)
It came up alright, despite him jerking the lever around like you should never do.. But each to thier own I suppose.. Pretty good for a single tuning. You should get it re done though, as it still has wuite a way to go.
He's "side loading" the string posts by applying torque the the tuning wrench in an effort to "fine" tune. This is a terrible technique and damages the piano. Not to mention he has no digital tuner. I would have said "no thank you" and asked him to leave. He plays well - I'll give him that.
CablloBlacnco, dont you know that a fine tuning is done with the ears (whith the same precision than with the best EDT availeable) ? how old are you (just wondering if the knowledge of real things have changed ).
Agreed for the bad technique and awful long tuning tip, the pressure is used only to check the settling of the pin usually, before then; there is an unstwisting move that allow the pin to grip in the block, then only VERY light pressure up and down is used to check the tension
@Pianotec You've got it about right, except that the up/down pressure is used at the very end to set each pin, and it makes the tuning hold longer. Jesus, can't believe some people think you get a better tuning with one of those fucking electronic things!
@CablloBlanco Jesus christ m8, you're fucked in the head if you'd turn a tuner away for not having one of those electronic pieces of shit. A tuning is much MUCH finer if done by ear with stretched octaves rather than done by tuning each note individually with the machine. Yes, you can get each note'd bps perfect with the machine, but the piano would sound like shit when played. Notes need to be tuned to eachother.
I have an old 40 year old Mason & Hamlin A (5'9" grand) I think that is what you have too. I'm rebuilding mine (since I am a tech) Have not started yet, but soon because it's getting where it won't hold a tune for very long. They were a GREAT piano.
Well... I'm impressed, that older gentleman can tear it up on a piano... And you weren't bad either! Although I did see you playing moonlight sonata a little differently than I do... Maybe I should get some sheet music lol but all around bravo!
Sweet!Nice playing..both of ya! BTW..where 's your MOM? Tell her to check out my "Catherine" playlist...she Hates me!!! You are one cool ass dude though!!
That was very interesting, watching him tune the piano by ear. Thanks for sharing! (Oh, and you are doing well learning to play so quickly.....congrats!)
wow man, as a musician myself I have a lot of respect for anybody who can play by ear or even tune an entire piano by ear! I've learned how to tune my guitar by ear, but that's only 6 strings, not 88! :)
as for the "not so good test", that's some nice playing dude, I think you sounded fine! as usual, any musician could always use a little more practice... can't hurt, right?
Do you know the name of the piano tuner?

@CablloBlanco what if a piano tuner came to your house and had perfect pitch, he defiantly would not have a tuner. Would you send him away too?
