Takes me back to 5 th grade listening to this in my friends room then rushing to buy the LP..wow 30 years ago already....brought me right back there...stuff like this is 1000x better than lady gaga and the crap from today
i've got this laserdisc too, great stuff! i buy all the genesis laserdiscs i can get my hands on, there is some great rare stuff available only on LD.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that this song was somewhat difficult to perform live, and that might be why there are so few performances of it available. Still, thanks for sharing this (it's one of my favorites of that era too).
As a black bloke, I can recall how I got a copy of this album. It can from one of those subscription offer- For a 1cent you can get a boatload of albums! I thought it was a joke...until I got a package in the mail! It was on and poppin!
@Maebashi I like to think it is, although Tony Banks said in a 1982 interview "it's got nothing to do with Dr Who" but still.....I tend to think of her when I hear this song. In a way she's the gold standard for women, to me. :-)
Damn! Tease! But I read your explanation. Thank you so much for posting. Man, I hope that there is video somewhere of this whole thing and that somebody will post it.
@brodyworld Imposible unless Genesis in their careless ways, where they have a tendency to lose half of they stuff they produce, find the original film reels from the concert...sorry.
@brodyworld It came in the middle of one of the long interviews on the LaserDisc called "Genesis Three Sides Live" and it cuts off at the end of the video you see here to go into more interviewing.
@jonmonbuckeye1 I'm sorry you feel this way. If the rest of the song even existed in the source i had taken this from, i assure you that the entire performence would have been here. This was entirely out of my control and I only uploaded this as it was presented on the official release that the band put out.
Amazing tune. Ska rhythm elements. Tony's counterpoint Yamaha electric grand. Chester not just copping Phil's drum lines, but taking it up a notch with his own smoooooth locked in style. Mike skanking the up stroke strat. Daryl pounding the bassline. Phil wrenching every note out of the vocals. Amazing. Extraordinary.

I love Phil I grew up on Genesis. That's the reason why I started to play the drums.Phil's voice at this stage in his career(81-84)but nobody can doubt that he lost it later on in his career. This makes me sad because, as a lyricist, I feel he has blossomed as he has got older, but his singing ability has diminished significantly. I still love his voice, his heart and his belief in the songs he writes, but I wish he had invested in either a voice coach,or somebody to tell him to take it easy!!L
just deleted a bunch of comments because they seemed to be nothng just random crap about genesis and phil collins that had absolutly nothing to do with the video and was basically from one person.
Yeah, like kevycanavan points out, phil was/is a terrific piano player, basically to the point of being known much more as a pianist than a drummer during his solo years. The guy was/is simply one of the best musicians of all time -- great drummer, excellent piano player, amazing voice, impeccable sense of melody and timing. It's impossible to overstate how popular he was in the 80s, for those of you born yesterday.
Actually, he said he was in the audience in the theatre scene at the end of the movie. They brought in a couple busloads of kids from the drama school he was attending. I remember Phil telling this story on David Letterman back in the 80's. He said "Don't look for me. I've tried!".
I love this song... One of the best tunes from PhC era on voc. I really enjoy all Genesis albums (maybe with one exception for "From Genesis to Revelation") and i don't make any big distinction between "eras" GP/PhC+H/PhC-H etc...
Used to watch this a lot in 1982 on the 3 Sides Live video and it anoyed the hell out of me that they faded the song as it came to the final part of the song. Aaaargh!!!
God ... I had forgotten what a great song this is. The funk/rock/jazz groove from 1.35 to 2.40 is just killer. Hard to believe it's been 25 years since they were the biggest band on the planet. Seems like yesterday.
Well I got the whole concert on betamax video but sadly, i can't view it anymore as the player expired. :(

>> phil was/is a terrific piano player . .
wouldn't go that far. I probably knows the basics but he's no where near Tony Banks.
Don't know how many people know this fact, but Phil Collins was in the beatles movie "A Hards Day night", at the very beginning of it I think.
