  • I like...Gould is my favorite..but I ignore the video and listen to the music alone, sans comments

  • I dont understand why this video got such a positive revieuws...

    it just wasn't good.

  • Well I have to agree with podx990. Hey plays well that´s true, but in my humble opinion he is far away from being good enough to actually sell his stuff. Really dudes I have played this concert myself and practiced it for some time and I know that it´s difficult and all, but if you give it a try, you will find many other recordings from better pianists. Pianists who are actually good enough to make a living out of playing this concert.

  • I don't normally complain about a struggling pianist's attempt at playing any piece, but this video got 4.5 stars, positive reviews, and Boise State has the nerve to try to actually sell this shit.

Something's wrong with this picture. The playing is crap, plain and simple. Anyone who says otherwise is either deaf or just lying. Unreal.

Now to see if my comment requires approval...

  • @podx990 We're all waiting, to listen to your superior performance, that is...

  • @crobc1 Oh, so you think in order to be able to distinguish a good performance from a bad one, you have to be able to play the piece in question well yourself? Anyone else buy that idea? lol nonsense. I don't place this piece at all, but if I did, I would not perform it publicly in this state. The performance is so poor, it sounds on the verge of just falling apart completely in many places (but I'd have to play the piece myself to know that, right?)

  • Congrats to this fine young pianist. Nice interpretation. Great job.

  • ok, ok... if you don't know what I mean by 1-5. check out 7:13. sorry for being so hard on you swedchef... besides this, and your awkward use of petal in a pre-pedal piece... I think it's a great performance.

  • presto - needs composure. no petal! that and don't cheat... 1 to 5, not 5 to 5. anyone who has played this will know what i'm talking about.

  • i take back what I said about composure... i'm impressed actually. you're both composed, and very comfortable. and great endurance!!!

  • andante - bellisimo.

  • Bravo I love the performance! Wonderful agility and dynamics! If there are thousands of notes...who cares if there are a few slips. I have attended concerts of Itzak Perlman and believe me, he makes mistakes! Nonetheless, he fills concert halls. Thankfully most people focus on and appreciate the beauty of Bach's music interpreted by a real virtuoso. It is a wonderful and sensitive performance. Pianists aim for perfection but it is impossible to attain. GREAT performance! Thank you!

  • If this piece were any faster it would NOT be clearly spoken.........there is NOTHING wrong with the speed. It's a beautiful piece and a wonderful heartfelt interpretation of both movements......I listen to a LOT of Bach and this is well done in my opinion.........mistakes? What about them.....we are all human and mistakes are going to happen in live recital........we are not robots THANK GOODNESS!! Yes, flawless cd's are GREAT, but to see a live production is even better!

  • i agree,

i mean this guy is obviously performing it,

not just recording himself at home.

blame him for making a mistake!

i mean wheny you perform you get stressed or nervous right?

    so geez.....give him a break....

  • Thanks haydn and rosalie - we all know where we make mistakes, but isn't that the fun of a live performance and recording. BTW, I was suffering through the flu through this whole recital, so I don't remember playing much of it =)

  • Great interpretation!!!

    Il tempo giusto!!!

    Bravoooo

    Cesar Amaro

  • In my opinion aelf29 is right, the tempo of the 3rd movement could be faster.

And the mistakes.... everyone of us makes mistakes, it is a hard peace of music, I'am also trying to play it at a adequate speed.

  • Too many mistakes!!! And the tempo...:-(

  • He did well.

We are all spoiled by recordings, thinking all performances should be flawless, when in reality live performances are not as great as pieces done in recording studios.

  • mistake around 5:00,

but otherwise very nice interpretation. :D

I like how you elongate the time between the two D's at the beginning ^^

  • Inconsistency of tempo in the third mov but i really like it as a movement.

  • nice performance. i especially liked his interpretation of the third movement.

  • In the third movement you seem to be fighting a bit with the piece. Its still quite good though, Im playing it myself but cannot do it that good yet, its really not a cakewalk.. But even if Im not a pianist as good as you, I would say you need to relax more in your hands and arms. That is also a difficult process of learning but it pays off in the end.

  • ohhh great...!!!

  • nice ~

  • some inconsistent tempo in the 3rd movement. were you nervous? i don't like playing Bach in public cos i get very very nervous, then i murder the piece!

  • Just 'cause it isn't Glenn Gould doesn't discount the quality of this guy's performance. Bach's hard to play, ESPECIALLY under pressure, and this guy, despite his few mistakes, was rock solid with his performance. I would have graduated him... :)

  • You have a very nice spirit and sensitivity. Really - it kept me interested in the whole thing, which is more than I can say about some other "professional" pianist clips on youtube...

  • I think I heard a wrong note in 6:30 to 6:31 ?

  • who cares

  • do you really have that much free time?

  • It would appear as though his arms are made of rubber. He's got at least one of them bouncing on every beat, sometimes both. Is he pedaling in the third movement? Personally, I think this recording is void of any resemblance to the style in which it was written.

  • well,

the thrid movement is very light and jovial

so it's actually a correct technique to bounce a little bit.

I'm not sure if he's using pedal, but even if he is, it doesn't sound blurry, so he must have mastered using pedal in this piece.

Contrary to your belief of voidness, i feel that this was a great interpretation of Bach's Italian Concerto. It's fast and jovial.

  • Thanks for taking the time to explain correct technique to me; I never would have guessed.

One can achieve a bouncing feeling (if necessary) without any such extraneous movements.

Fast and jovial? I'm sure Bach had that exact description in mind when he wrote this...

Instead of doing me any more of your favors, do yourself one and listen to a more trustworthy recording (I'd reccomend Trevor Pinnock). Or perhaps you're too much of a crazy and/or hyper "boi" to appreciate authenticity.

  • the third movement was a unevent and slippery and full mistakes... (Eventhough I think Gould plays to fast, Bach's spirit is more present in his perfomances).

  • how can you say that bach spirit is that way!!do you know him¿¿?just coment but do not say crap...gould is just perfect

  • I prefer this to Gould who rushes everything ive heard. But just a little faster for movement II, more than 1/2 as fast again would be overkill though.

  • Watch out Glenn Gould! Wow.

    Uhnm,... Glenn Gould is dead...?

  • ofcourse he is dead asshole!!

  • You just don't get it, do you, you articulate cretin.

  • a bit too slow for me

  • I think you may have a wrong note at 5:01.

  • James, beautifull.

In my opinion, this II movement needs a little pedal to make it sing.

    And....EASY?.....no..this piece far from easy.

When not play well it is dull.

So the interpretation is very difficult.

  • Pedal and volume changing help to hide irregularities ;)

  • This is a very easy piece to play and yet so powerful and moving. You should try it as a practice, I did when I had 2 years of practising the piano and It really helped me.

    Wonderful playing by the way.

  • easy? as a practice?! lol nothing is easy if you really want to play it well.

  • i love bach. I am working on this piece now too.

  • very nice

  • I think it's an interesting concept (the pedal). I know the "Gould crew" would do it more dry, but I like what Mr. Berry is doing.

  • he s a very talented pianist, but still i would not play this piece (2nd movement) with pedal.
