He's right Def Jam helped make hip hop big but it also destroyed it by not backing its good artists and giving them the support they needed. Raekwon's last album was so dope and needed the right support. People will buy the music that is shoved down their throats constantly. That's why Rihanna sells. Why can't good music from the likes of Raekwon get the same support?
As much as KRS contradicts himself in a lot of his interviews, i agree with him here...many of the biggest mainstream names in hip hop came from def jam.....and def jam became one of the only labels that mattered anymore... people stopped paying attention to the independent artists COMPLETELY once def jam really popped off and became the biggest label in hip hop
I'm so sick of all these non-articulate rappers trying to be so deep and philosophical. They sound like clowns regardsless when they try to infuse big mispronounced words with poorly choreographed ghetto jargon. Call me shallow but GOD DAMN, his teeth are pure butter. He looks like an absolute hoodlum talking that hood rat jargon. BRUSH KRS!!!
@1981cad you went from trying to say KRS cant talk to trying to talk about his teeth? and hes the one talking ghetto jargon? shut the fuck up...Kris is a legend and last i checked i heard no "ghetto jargon" you sound like a fag....this is hip hop...get your point across you idiot.
@getyoasshome Yes, getyoasshome, ghetto jargon! Judging by your predictable & unimaginative response you would not only know a lot about ghetto jargon but would be the validictorian of an ebonic class and an alumni on a hoodlum university. The assumption of someone's sexuality based on a you tube opinion lead to this rant? Pure comedy ! The best part is you think your making some kind of valid point when really your just throwing a tantrum. Grow up and grow a brain cell... LMBO
It sounds like he wanted to say more than he did say, but the interviewer sounded like a snake looking to set him up with the illuminati when he would of said the wrong thing.
Don't forget Rick Rubin started Def Jam in his college dorm when he was in a punk bank called Hose. I agree with the other comment, Def Jam's not all to blame. Plus hip hop isn't destroyed. There are plenty other people like me that don't watch tv or listen to mainstream radio, but listen to Wu-Tang, Big L, Black Moon, Chino XL, the good stuff.
@ninjacheckmate YEA BUT WUTANG BIG L AND BLACK MOON DONT SOUND TODAY. IT ALL DEPENDS WHAT YOU THINK DEAD IS. IF YOU THINK DEAD IS THE SOUND, THAN ITS ALIVE BECAUSE PART OF HIPHOP IS THE STREETS AND THE STREETS HAVE NEW SOUNDS. NOW IF YOU MEAN POWER WISE, THAN IT IS DEAD BECAUSE NON OF IT HAS MEANING.
@ninjacheckmate I concur with that. Hip Hop/Rap/Art isn't dead, & never will be as long as a human breathes. The industry, however, is SLAVERY!!!! As Slavery itself birthed the Underground Railroad, so too has Industry-dominated bullshit manifested the myriad of ways we circumvent it.
I respect KRS-One but he can't blame it all on Def Jam, blame it on Universal & the radio for not playing other rappers on other labels. Who can't blame other rappers to be on a label that's hot now. I give you two examples, if Def Jam had the game lock down, The Roots should be a platinum act right now and on the real the way Atlantic/WEA treating Lupe Fiasco new record(the record is finished but Atlantic/WEA has put it on lock down), Lupe wished he's Def Jam. See what I mean. Peace.
