I have and announcement to share that may be of interest to you. I am messing around with a cheap router the Rosewill RNX-GX4, similar to the Netcore NW618. I have hacked out the serial port. See my progress on youtube videos...
One thing to mention is that some of those usb serial converters use ftdi chip with max232 chip. And they cost much less than those chips from many parts supliers. It just felt so wrong when I found out that i had hooked up 2 max232s after eachother. One inside the adapter and other on my breadboard.
