Is there any way to get an ATX power supply to work for an Imac G5? Pin 22 on the imac has 24 volts, so how could I get 24 volts from an ATX supply? The power supplies in these G5's are a joke... they are so tiny, of course they'd fry. Any help would be appreciated.
Because of this conversion Iv'e started off on a whole slew of Mac mods (installing and soldering in a new ATX power supply was the first time I opened a mac). Since a week ago, I have added in two hard drives (a 60GB, and 300 GB). Tried adding another GB ram but have the wrong kind. I also added in a fast DVD DL R capable drive (it only had a CD-R drive). I also upgraded to Leopard. Next is another fan (she runs real hot now), and more Ram. Almost a whole new mac.
I got mine working after 4 years of storage. THANK YOU SIR! I truly mean that. It was so nice to hear that chime come on again after a very long time (I use windows 7 now, not bad, but not osx).
To anyone attempting this, be very careful and just match the colors up. If your power supply has colors not on the MDD, dont use them. Double up some colors as I did.
the MDD mobo connector requires a 25v standby - but PC power supplies do not provide a 25v output. how do you deal with this mismatch? I want to do a MDD PSU retrofit - but concerned about this. can you plsss respond to this. thanks.
Will the case close if I have a long graphics card? Mine is a 7800 GT. If 500w enough for a bi-processor mdd with 10000rpm drives and a powerful graphics card?
This is exactly what I need to do with my failed MDD. I read up on all of this and this is the best demo I saw. The question I have is once you did this were you able to shutdown and restart normally. The last commnet on another post on this a person said they were unable to do these. They had to force quit and if in OS9, the machine would not come out of sleep mode if it went to sleep. Did you have these issues?
@roboQcar There is lack of power because the apple cinema display requires an extra 28v in which the atx doesn't have so you have to use the DVI port instead. Or, you can wire in a 28v wall wart power supply in addition but Im not sure how to do it.
I believe without the 28v added in, you only loose out on firewire capability and ACD support.
what web sight did you use for the wiring schematics for the MDD - ATX Power Supply Conversion for G4...Mine died out the other day and I'm missing out on money i have phone calls for my music and studio time but have nothing for them till i get back up and running..Please help....Thank you
I've done a conversion just now, the system boots and chimes, but I think there are further issues as nothing will appear on screen.

is there a fix for the lack of power to the Apple cinema display when doing this mod?

you cant connect them, unless you have a second 25V power supply, if not, just leave it disconnected
