Earlier in the century, James E. Norris had played on one of hockey's early powers, the Montreal HC, nicknamed the "Winged Wheelers." Because of the team's location in Detroit, the Motor City, Norris transformed the club's logo into the first version of the Red Wings logo as it is known today. The Red Wings used to be called the Cougars and then the Falcons. Mr. Norris bought the Falcon's and chose a new name. He was the original owner and creator of the Red Wings franchise.

Wasn't the Winged Wheels the logo for the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association which was initally known for its Bicycling and latter Hockey? Norris had been a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, a sporting club with cycling roots. The MAAA's teams were known by their club emblem and these Winged Wheelers were the first winners of the Stanley Cup in 1893. Norris decided that their logo was perfect and on October 5, 1932 the club was renamed the Red Wings. Just wondering.

You have a right to that opinion. Thanks for watching. I HAD to put something together to get the ball rolling so to speak. But the NHL has a habbit of ruining aspects which make the game great.
