  • Blessed is the one who shoot this video .....

  • Amazing that Rolling Stone left him of the 100 Greatest Guitarist issue

  • @VictorNYC Rolling stones is awful and they probably base it off of...well...not music...sad

  • i'm pretty sure the piano got pregnant...

  • Shawn was and is a amazing musician! If you don't like him then do not look him up on youtube And don't write hurtful things about my brother. You obviously have no manners or taste!!!

  • he is a master of music

  • Comment removed

  • I am a fan.

  • This Is the guy I used to trade old "collectible beer cans" for bass guitar lesson. Oh, how I squandered my precious time with him. However, The most prfound thing about Shawn is the size and length of those fingers of his. He had incredible "reach"!

  • @jazzhawkus His fingers were tiny, he could just make his hand do horrible things =P

  • @jazzhawkus With all due respect, I don't think the most profound thing about Shawn was his fingers. It was his mind, and from what I've heard from others that knew him, his heart.

  • These super-fast and clean players just bore me...

  • @Knepperify1 Are you kidding me? sure he can shred but that doesn't mean he's just another shred head this guy was a musical genius and put so much feeling into his music. and if you think he's playing "too fast" you should just listen to some of his slower pieces. There's honestly points where he plays one note every two or three seconds but he can make it sound sooo good and he put so much feeling into it. He's not playing super fast to impress people, he does it when he feels its right.

  • @pegasuslover97

Technique for technique's sake bores me whether it's Classical Guitar, Shredding or any other instrument.

Sure, it's difficult to do. That doesn't mean it's good music.

  • @Knepperify1 but that's the exact opposite of what he's doing. He shreds because he has the ability, but he's not pulling an yngwie and trying to play everything as fast he can to impress people and make it like a challenge. He doesn't constantly shred and only does it where he feels it's appropriate. He can definitely have subtlety in his music. Like i said, listen to some slower stuff. Epilouge for Lisa and Death Theme are good examples.

  • @pegasuslover97

I don't care about what he's **trying** to do.

Fast clean players bore me. If they are so fast, then slow down so that the music can breath instead of making it an exercise in my nervous system keeping up with his rapid-fire notes.

You like him. Great. I think he sucks. Yeah he's fast and I suck at guitar.

That doesn't mean that Lane is good. It means he's fast. Big difference.

So many fast fast players create mediocre music that no one else can play.

    Fast is not good.

  • @Knepperify1 Whatever man. This guy knew a lot musically and put feeling into his music like many others couldn't and that can still happen just because he's playing too fast and. I can agree that you have your own opinion, but he in no way "sucks". This guy had so much in phrasing and expressing his music in a perfect way and he knew so much about music and his guitar. And as i've said like twice, he does slow down his music completely. And there is such thing as being fast AND good..

  • @Knepperify1 Lane is regarded by many legends of the guitar to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

  • OMG, he's dead? how?

  • @amno1000

    from being too awesome.

  • nobody has and ever will play like Shawn lane!! R.I.P

  • shay carl???

  • Its funny because as guitarist we have heard of all the greats but never have heard of Shawn, then we come across Shawn on these u-tube vids and just shit ourselves in disbelief at how we have never heard of the greatest guitarist that ever lived, even that is mind boggling about Shawn, let alone his musical skills.

  • ofc shawn is alive. he's alive in my soul and I am sure hes alive in yours!

  • He was, in our lifetime and perhaps our childrens and their children,

  • So god damn fucking insane you can´t fucking swear enough to god damn explain how incredibly killer fucking awesome this video is

  • HOLY SHIT. WHAT THE FUCK.

  • @ralphM1114 Yeah , non-musicians think that music/jams are some kind of competition for who's fastest , or who's...don't know what. A gutarist or pianist or whoever can play 5 notes or 100 notes , does't mater. The feeling and understanding matters.

Regarding Shawn - I think he's the most unique music-mind ever walked this planet. Everything that will someone say will not be enough, so I stop here. Too bad he's gone... but I think he will allways be alive as long as there are his fans.

  • @mashovbikes This video really showed how unique he is. Playing that fast on BOTH the keys and the guitar while still being very melodious and musical is quite a rare feat, indeed.

  • what is with people comparing musicians. all of you obviously do not have a deep/clear understanding of music. it's all pure individual expression, nobody is better than anybody else. i hope people begin to realize that instead of bickering pointlessly over youtube.

  • UNTOUCHABLE!

  • WHAT THE HELL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guthrie who?? bahaha compared to Shawn hes just another noodler wanker...no comparison AT ALL!!!!!!!!

  • @tmh1717 My bias would still put Shawn above Guthrie bro. But you've gotta admit, Guthrie is one of the premiere top-class electric guitarists of the modern age. He has the chops and style to show for it, but upon close inspection, the only thing that lowers guthrie's playing in light of my interest, in my opinion, is that everything sounds too "conventional". Conventional the context of something along the lines of textbook playing. His theory is amazing though.

  • that's it, im adding him to my list of people to clone when i learn how to clone people

  • lol holy shit.. a master at guitar and piano that could do an improv on top of an improv and still sound incredibly awesome

  • any videos of him playing drums? i'm sure he's sick!

  • This is why Shawn was better than everyone else out there.

  • half the world knew Yngwie malmsten and Jens Johanssen in the 80´s and no one knew Shawn lane ?????????????

this MAN fuck them both in their respective instruments...

  • That's ridiculous...in a good way.

  • type in circus gallop or death waltz for impossible songs to play

  • Holy shit at the Keyboard solo, I didn't realise he was that good on keys!

  • @jasonalexgorton

Check out the vid in my channel - it is a piano piece Shawn composed called Pluie d'Étincelles.. it's quite something!

  • He and Ro9b from Memphis , played my bachelor party in 93. Great guy, got to jam with them on the yellow charvel. One sweet genius.

  • There's something about Shawn which is deeply spiritual. His playing touched all the most essential colours to the human experience: grief, fury, playfulness, abstract, ethereal, soaring, fun, and most of all...passion. His reckless abandon to set his own course produced something we're still scratching our heads at 10 years later.

  • he's as fast with his right hand on the keys as his left on the guitar neck....

  • @prinznevsky If you throw that thought around your head long enough the impossibility of one man having that amount of talent will melt your brain

  • Just when I thought maybe I could play like him some day....UGH FU SHAWN!! I LOVE YOU TOO MUCH YOU BASTARD!!! YOU'RE TOO FUCKING GOOD!!!

  • he is great dont get me wrong, but that wasnt a great keyboard solo, it was just really fast and chromatic.

  • @anthonymarker Really? Shawn had professional East Indian musicians say they could never believe that a Westerner could ever appreciate or execute phrasings from their music. But Shawn did it perfectly on this keyboard solo.

  • the beginning of the solo was tite but once he starting throwing diminished shit in there and rolling all over the keys i was less impressed. i honestly dont listen to him that much though so dont quote me on anything im saying that doesnt sound valid lol

  • @anthonymarker Peace bro, understand.

  • @anthonymarker That is not true. At all actually.

  • Shawn!! ohh Shawn!! My God Shawn. Thanks for showing us the path. Thank you Shawn.

  • genius isn't a good enough word!!!

  • Totally, totally insanely incredible and at the same time... so sad. How can a genious like that be so... lost (?) in terms of how to treat his own body and life!?

Hmmm, hope he enjoys soloing with all the other legends in heaven! R.I.P.

  • The guitar solo was good, but in no way equal to that keyboard solo. The diminished and atonal concepts are so advanced... I can hear it speaking to me. Not shitting on the guitar solo, it was monstrous in it's own right. But the keyboard is going to need a ciggy after that pounding.

  • its easy to see shawns influence in guthries playing

  • A musician of the highest order indeed. His gift usually encourages other humans to share their own thing. What a God given talent.

  • And while I'm posting... Holdsworth is a complete yawn. 1 style atonal rubbish. How about playing something that sounds nice Holdsworth? Oh no, write another atonal chorus drenched chord progression. Boring.

  • now that's what I call a solo.

  • Wish I could have seen him live... Such a waste of a death... Why couldn't the universe kill someone more useless?

  • Holy crap! Is he even playing music? Incredible chops.

  • well, now we know the whole aliens, U.F.O's thing is true.

  • I honestly think shawn lane was the greatest musician to ever live.

  • One of the best performances I've seen from Shawn. One of us Joe Schmoes would have to live 3 lifetimes (in good physical condition mind you :), to even touch this. Still highly doubtful we would, though.

  • Oh my GOD! He can do the crazy diminished shit on the piano too! Did you see his fingers?! They were BLURS of focused frenzy. His legato is unmatched period.

  • Rivaled only by Holdsworth.

  • Uhhh no offense to Holdsworth but not really. No doubt Holdsworth is a monster on guitar, but Lane was amazing at THREE ways of music. Guitar, piano, scat sining. And that is what I know of, which is very little.

I wouldn't say Shawn is better than holdsworth, but Holdsworth should take a page from Shawns book and widen his genre. Although he is king at his style, it NEVER hurts to get that way at another.

Could you imagine if Holdsworth played with as many influences as, lets say... Govan? .

  • Holdsworth can't be compared with any guitar player. He's not influenced by guitar players, and his aproach to the guitar and music resembles nothing in this earh. Govan and Lane are top musicians (Lane were, anyway..), but please, do not compare Holdsworth with them.

    : )

  • @andreviegaschannel Dude, Lane did Powers of Ten on piano first. It wasn't MEANT for guitar. But he did it anyways.

Just like Holdsworth shit is just NOT meant to be on the guitar. But they just do it. I wonder what instrument the next monster guy like them will go after. Maybe the human voice?

  • he from another planet!

  • damn this guy is just so good! why did he had to die too early?!

  • The largely unrecognized pride of Memphis, Tn. I used to listen to Shawn in Beale St bars and was quite amazed, but I never heard him played keyboards. The older I get and the more I hear his recordings, the more I realize this guy is one of the greatest mucisions of the 20th century.

  • he's not scat singing. he's just using an indian music vocal technique

  • you know what...forget the guitar and keyboard for just a second...this vid proves he was one of the best scat singers on the planet too!

  • dont forget chain smoked,,, haha

  • not true. the sad thing is, he probably read more than the two of us combined lol

  • The greatest musician who ever lived.

  • keyboard MASTER

    guitar MASTER

    RIP u r missed

  • "He can do better"?????? How do you figure?

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry, I meant "E DOUBLE HARMONIC MAJOR SCALE".

  • E HARMONIC MAJOR SCALE !!! Cool !!

Like a phrygian dominant, but with a raised 7th.

  • was he matching the piano line with vocals?

  • musicians often do that non-deliberately

    people like

    oscar peterson

    glenn gould

    erroll garner

    and apparently shawn lane!

  • I think he did it pretty deliberately here, either way, its fuckin sweet...and don't forget about hendrix too!

  • I think his weight is what makes him so dam cool aside from his amazing skill lol I mean how could you not like the guy

  • okay any one who insults this man over his weight or style is a fag cause there will never ever be some one with such talent or ability as him

  • "nonamenowwhat" is a spineless coward who will never amount to anything.

  • Homo

  • So.......... some one have tabs for this? :)

  • What an amazing individual! R.I.P.

  • are you fucking retarded dude honestly, wow... you need to get a fucking life.

  • i bet shawn,s a blackbelt on bavarian cheese whistle

  • Goddamn how much technique can one person have, and still be playing all these melodies that he can sing to? I feel like a caveman trying to do algrebra when i watch this. Its just pass most the shred stuff thats out there and so prominent. THis is lightyears beyond bands like dreamtheater and the like...............im going to bow out and go take up bavarian cheese whistle.

  • "..im going to bow out and go take up bavarian cheese whistle. "

haha, join the long queue. :) There was no limit with Shawn. He had too much knowledge and genetic ability.

Shawn could learn any instrument at this level. In one interview he said if he had the hands/feet he would be able to beat 10+ different tempos at the same time.

  • he was an actual genius

  • Holy shit.

That was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.

  • Lane was a better keyboard player than a guitar player. I like the keyboard solo here but don't care for the guitar solo.

  • ALIEN!!!! RIP fucking amazing!!!!!!

  • i think i just crapped my pants...

this is the greatest Clip ever !!!!

  • what music do you listen to?

  • then why are you watching it? shawn lane was amazing

  • What? shawn lane proclaimed aa a second keyboardist all the time???? who is number one???? Can u tell me???

  • probably zawinul i would guess

  • Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) or Don Airey (Deep Purple)

  • How shameful. You have no perception. Do you think anyone cares which mainstream artists you like? I like Rudess.... a lot. With or without Dream Theater or Liquid Tension Experiment. This is a different world all together.

  • yo are you serious? no perception? I just named 2 of the most prominent keyboard players ever. I'm not even saying which ones I like. I was answering Kupret1's question as to who the number one keyboardist of all time might be. Don't stick your head where you can't smell brosef. Jeez. READ BEFORE YOU TYPE.

  • Really? I noticed you didn't mention anyone like Rick Wakeman or Joe Zawinul. Come on man, take your foolishness elsewhere.

  • my only problem with rudess is that he looks like he's arrogant but a player of his caliber is bound to be a little cocky. hell i would be lol.

  • Shawn Lane is the best guitarist in the world.

Even the most known guitarists like Steve Vai, Buckethead and others admires this guy. Because they can't do what he is doing.

So sad that he is dead.

  • OhMFG!!!!This guy was from another world.

  • I... along with many others ,always knew Shawn that he is the greatest guitarist of all time... but i just read a comment where he was proclaimed by Keyboard Magazine as the second most Proficient Keyboardist of all Time ...can I get a confirmation... and an AMEN!

Who came in first... GOD! RIP GREAT ONE!

  • Anyone know which cd of his this song made it onto?

  • ok! obviously this is alien technology.. the hugest musical technique in the same hand of an absolute genius wich also, for some unbeliveable reason has also NO limits with guitar and piano and .. nobody know whatever. Furthermore he also play with somach before head. He can't be human. May have the shape but it is a perfect copy of a man. You can easily tell the difference becouse he is just perfect and this do not belongs to humans.

    nexus 20?

  • per caso shawn lane è anche il più grande pianista della storia dell'umanità?

  • Incredible & amazing. I'm just glad he was having fun...

  • this guy didnt master the guitar, he mastered music

  • MOST UNDERRATED MUSICIAN EVER.

Shawn Lane was indeed a genius even more than a genius, his technics on guitar and keyboard are just unreal, his understanding of music is also unreal.

He was taken way before his time, guys like him are always gone too soon. we just have to be thankful that about every century or so we get a person like him that makes human kind look a little better.

too bad that most ppl are idiots who are not able to appreciate this music and understand its greatness.

  • takes decades of dedication to achieve this

  • Mozart was a genius but ...not even in SHAWNS league...ALL HAIL THE MASTER... rip, ur misd

  • The guitar was like part of his body

  • I agree. A deep connection between ma and instrument.

  • I meant "between man and instrument".

  • Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit..

  • how can you say he's overrated? you are not even close to understand what he did. I an also pretty far though. But the things I learned from him make me say he's underrated as a piano player, as a guitarist, as a song writer... I could say as a musician.

  • Calling him over rated is bullshit hes insane at keyboard and guitar what more could you want?

  • 4:06 fucking great vibrato

  • i hope this will never be removed! one of my favourite videos on youtube

  • I say he's underrated. The man's technical and musical phrasing is phenomenal. I learned a lot from his playing. And most "Lane fanatics" are some of the biggest names in the guitar world out there. I would have never found out about him if guys like Gilbert, Buckethead, Govan, MAB, Eklundh, Cooley, and many others didn't speak so highly of him.

  • you're right ...

to be considered by guthrie govan like the master isn't something too bad ?? ;)

  • How can be over-rated. He can only be equalled technically and nobody famous has done that. His music is only judged on complete opinion so that is not included.

  • overrated as a guitar player are you mad....i dont think you play guitar to understand it...i can play any guitarist but i have bad trouble for LANE..

  • is that phrygian dominant at the start?

  • That keyboard solo was much more musical than the guitar solo, I feel.

  • genious

  • Some folks just can't pull their head out of their butts...oblivious...so self absorbed they would'nt know if they were standing next to God himself. Shawn rules completely!!! R.I.P. great one

  • my thoughts excactly!

  • Ditto, man. This dude was one of the greatest and still is.

  • Shawn was the fastest guitar player, but it wasn't only technique, he played gorgeous things. even herman li, michael angelo and yngwie are pussies compared to him, we are all pussies compared to shawn ^^' THIS GUY WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! :'(

  • insane

  • please explain how this sucks

  • LOL his account is closed. (MoneySexDrugsMurder )

  • You are the one highlander!

  • THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!!!!!!

  • Shawn Lane Is a place to be

  • Shawn lane is better as guitarist. Plays very good the keyboards but not compared to great keyboard players like chick corea, david paich or wakeman by example

  • It's easy to say that because people mostly know him for playing guitar. But he was absolutely amazing at keyboards (and he played piano before guitar). In fact, many of the guitar songs he composed were written on keyboards first.

  • Shawn lane's album power of ten I really like. One of the few great albums that feature a "shredder"

  • 3:58-4:05 felt like nails on a chalkboard to my ears lol

  • :O :O :O :O

  • surely because he wasnt good enough to play this music, wasnt it?? but well i dont care, i dont line the "feeling" of shawn lane, in this video, and if anyone of you show me another album or anther video maybe where shawn shows me a better feeling, i will be gratefied with you

  • shawn lane is very talented. I wanna be like him. full of talent and an owesome musician.

  • please everyone leave shawn alone so what if he was overweight he was amazing!!and this guy wasnt all about speed listen to epilogue for lisa FOR GODS SAKE!!!

  • Anyone that can play half that good would be deaf, blind and disrespectful not to recocnize the level of virtuosity. You don't have to like the music to be able to hear how good the man was. Wake up people! There's not guys like this on every street corner. If you can out play him where's your video????
