I work at an ice arena and I can say right now that some of the glass that we use is almost 10 years old and still doesn't need replacing. 1/4 inch tempered glass.

The glass will last as long as there aren't any nicks or cracks in the surface; Tempered glass takes a hell of a beating and keeps going. But once a crack does form, even a tiny one, it compromises the strength of the entire glass and it takes very little force to shatter it after that.

The hit wasn't really all that big - sometimes the plexiglass gradually becomes weakened and just gets hit in a funky way or possibly is cracked somewhere along the boards and just shatters at the right moment. That's why pucks can shatter the glass even when they're not going very fast. Still kinda cool though.
