Calculus 1 was ok, but when I took Calculus 2, I felt like the God damn president of the United States of America! Calculus 2 was very challenging! Calculus 3 is a LOT easier since it's all about analysis.
Teachers these days come in two flavors (201X) ... the master who thinks they're too important to teach, or the moron who thinks the one favorite book is the the answer to everything.
I remember back when I was a 5th grader, being bored in math class because I wasn't challenged enough. Even back then, when I would answer a question, I would have to give the simpler version of my answer because my answer included numbers everyone would get confused. And when we played Math Around the world, everyone would want to get me out because of my advancement. After a while, I didn't want to play because I would get back to my seat before anyone moved one. I was always the target.
not to be a "super nerd" or anything...... first of all not all continuous functions can be integrated (for example, f(x)=e^(x^2), at least using elementary functions). Second of all, a function doesn't have to be continuous to be integrable (for example, f(x)=ln|x| CAN be integrated over an interval including x=0, using improper integrals...
Totally appreciate this! Just finished my undergraduate degree...they treat you like the students should be so entirely grateful that they (the admin, the prof's etc) are there. I found, in the end, that it was a +$50,000 investment that should have gained me more than it did. Too bad there's such a thing as tenure. Worst. Idea. Ever! With a small university/college and one choice in prof for a required class...you sit through a whole lot of B.S.
We had a prof who just read pages from books the entire class period--it was awful. We complained to the dept. head who eventually came and sat in on a class--and fell asleep. It was that profs last semester.
a group in my class didn't like one of my high-school teacher so they got him fired and that wasn't even collage so you cannot chose not to take a certain course in the same way.
I took A.P. Calculus BC in high school. There was only one teacher that taught calculus BC. He tried to teach us about convergence and divergence using his body... Not so helpful. Luckily, I managed to get a 4 on the test, which could have easily been a 5 had I had a better teacher.
What do you do when you don't HAVE a choice? My program is small enough that I don't have two or three sections. Also, the dean tends to support bad professors instead of advocating for students. Any last-ditch-effort tips?
@mergfkt i feel for you, see they only have to deal with you for about 4 years, while a teacher will be for another 20. the best you can do as last-ditch-efforts is to explain how you can't learn from that teacher and ask if you can have it done as a self study. Normally that means reading the book and a lot more exams, but it does offer another solution. I had a teacher drop me a full letter grade because I didn't bring my book to class.
@bluefootedpig Wow, that's awful. I'm mostly just dealing with a professor who doesn't test the way he lectures, so we have to try to decipher what he's asking before we can answer the question. This results in a poor representation of how well we're understanding the material. I think his graduate student is writing the tests but I don't know the proper way to address it.
This topic was directed for college math teachers? The description fits my current high school math teacher PRFECTLY. 0.o I knew he'd be better teaching at a college!
i wish you can teach me im so dumb in school but i never left back and im a 7th grader and its an important year what you did with math was so fast and if i could do that i will skip grades! plz teach me!
The problem is, the whole college system is flawed. It puts so much importance on "a good education" which usually includes long, boring lectures about the mating rituals of gnats, TENURE (which the poster underscores, I have professors who would have to commit felonies to get fired), administrative bs, and ever-increasing tuition. Until the system gets fixed, college students are in serious trouble.
why the thumbs down ? he's/she's making a fair point, if u cnt understand the teacher, theres a REAL problem, i mean, we wernt brought up in this country, well watever country ur in, to understand foreign accents
I agree, kinda. I had a teacher for Latin, he was actually a cool and relaxed guy, when talked to, but he had a super heavy spanish accent, that only got worse when he was teaching (=nervous), which made his lessons incomprehensible and quite borring.
You generalize too broadly, and obviously have very little idea what you're talking about...and yeah I obviously like guys because I said that. Stupid comment. Bet you're a virgin too.
Now this, is great advice. I was talking with a co-worker who is going to college. And she was talking about how she did horrible in the same class, it was math, but did better with another teacher. I said, yeah I understand that, some teach better than others.
My friend wrote a presentation on that for "Religious Education" (or RE). It was completely in topic, but the teacher forced him (unsuccessfully) to go to "Religious Counseling".

Unfortunately you can't always shop around for professors. If I did that it would take probably more than 6 or 7 years to get an undergrad.
