  • Hi Bil,

the raw video file without the background music is a bit large to email to you about 2.1GB. This is the full version and goes for about 1.5 Hours.

I had big issues with synching the audio for that was recorded from the 2m Liaison frequency and not direct from VK3RTV. Most of the operators did not have audio with there images.

Let me know if you want some local content I could probably mail you some minus any background music.

Is your local ATV digital or analogue.

    Cheers, Jack.

  • If it didn't have music I'd play it on my HAM TV station.

Hams should be SEEN as well as heard!

  • TRC501AU is only a Standard Definition STB. Quite an old STB and I can remember at the time when I purchased the one here I paid about $125.00 at the time a HD receiver was about $200.00 and from memory there was only SBS transmitting HD at the time. One of the better popular STB's to RX RTV is the Strong SRT5405E but even that is no longer manufactured. VK3RTV puts out about 18watts that is watts not Kilowatts like the commercial stations co you need a good location and antenna to RX ATV.

  • Forgive me, but how does one pick up VK3RTV-1? I live in Reservoir

  • Just Google VK3RTV and I think it will be the second hit. There is information on how to receive it also a list of known STB's that can tune it.

    Hope this helps, Jack.

  • Does it still broadcast an analogue signal?

  • No the Analogue signal went off air shortly after the second test. If you live in the Bendigo area then the old Analogue repeater now services that area.

Cheers, operators can still uplink using Analogue but VK3RTV is Digital only out. There are quite a few stations uplinking using Digital but due t the cost of the transmitters only about 1/3 have that mode.

    Cheers, Jack.

  • I now have two set top boxes (including a Teac DV-B300) and a digital TV (Nu-tec 48cm). NONE can receive VK3RTV. As previously mentioned, the cessation of analogue transmission leaves me vastly unimpressed, and the unwillingness of the group to take account of people in my position is equally disappointing.

  • Yes, I have a ARISTA set top box that can see the signal at 30%, but with no signal quality. Needless to say, it won't tune in. I also bought a DSE box that they said might work but still no luck. Mind you, my Analog on VK3RTV was very weak, and I am just using a standard amplfied antenna pointing at the Commercials. But I miss seeing VK3RTV since digital. Haven't seen any ATV since analog went off. Boo!

  • @videbus Not sure where you live but I would be happy to tune the Arista STB for you.

Once tuned up it may work from your location. Most STB's need at least 50% signal before they lock in. One that does not seem to mind is the Strong SRT5405E. According to Strong it should not tune the frequency but in our experience it is one of the better STB's for RTV reception. Your other option is if you have a friend with a good view of Mt. Dandy, visit them and tune the STB there.

  • We also had a VK4RTV in Brisbane for a short while, which was just a test panel in December 1999. Does anyone know if there's any Amateur TV services still happening in Brisbane?

  • I think you will find that the old Brisbane Analogue TV Repeater has gone DIgital. Try manually tuning your STB or Digital TV to 426.25 you must manually tune it and there needs to be a carrier present for your receiver to lock the station in.

    Hope this helps. Cheers, Jack.

  • Thanks mate.

  • This is very interesting stuff, I'm quite impressed. So basically Amateur Television is just people talking to each other through television signals?

  • DO a google on "brisbane atv group"

    Cheers, VK3W-W-W JAck.

  • Diffraction problems around a Melbourne Water header reservoir roof structure (5 acres of it!) plus my Teac DV-B300 set top box's inability to tune that part of the band make digital a non-goer for me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I really haven't enough interest to buy a set top box specifically for VK3RTV. I have to repeat my comment: digital produces great pics IF you can get them, and it has other disadvantages, like the latency problem.

  • The delay due to latency in the digital video transmission, putting the analog liason channel out of sync with it, is one of many problems that digital transmission introduces, rather than solves. I have no objection to DV transmissions, but I think that any contemplated switch-off of analog would be foolish and shortsighted. VK3RTV uses MUCH lower power than 'pro' TV stations, and for many people - like me - sigs are too low for digi reception. More thought should be given to this - VK3AML.

  • Chris, that was mentioned in the information file. I had it explained to me that when you are operating RTV 70cm and 2m simplex there is no lipsynch as the TV station is transmitting audio along with the vision and it should be in synch.

I cut the audio from the video carrier as the one second repeat in the audio was confusing.

VK3RTV should thump into your QTH, do you have a lot of desense from the tower close by.

    Jack.

  • Could you send me a website with some details of what equipment I would need for amateur TV, By the way what are you allowed to actually broadcast on amateur TV because I thought that any kind of music would be prohibited due to copy write.

  • Can't type web addresses here but do a search for "VK3RTV" and follow the "geocities" link there is a lot of information on how to get on ATV there. To transmit you will need an Advanced Amateur License. Transmissions are not to be entertaining. If you can tune your current tv to 444.250mhz this should give you an idea of what type of transmissions there are. The repeater is not very active so tuning it in could take some time. When it goes Didital then you need to tune 446.5mhz.

    Cheers, Jack.

  • I'm actually 100km south of Mildura would that be a problem as I can't imagine there wouldn't be any kind of repeater in my area.

  • No, but (1) my Teac DV-B300 set top box does not receive the ATV frequency; (2) the four acres of metal roof structure on a Melbourne Water header reservoir causes me gross multipath (3) the inherent latency and delay of the DV signal with respect to any real time liason audio is a near-insoluble problem with DV; (4) perhaps most significantly, the unwillingness of the ATV group to even discuss analogue retention for people in my position eliminates my desire for further involvement.

  • Hi Chris,

you explained this months ago (look up the list) hope all is well, Jack.

  • Hello Chris Like I have told You If You go to Jacar they have STBs for only 29.95 dollars and at Your QTH with a beam VK3RTV should come in BATC S5

  • I have a webcam, SKYPE and YOUTUBE for all my digital TV needs. I have hundreds of viewers and potentially millions more, mostly beyond the coverage of 3RTV. It doesn't need a ham license. It's open to anyone. And - very importantly - because I use the computer in my work, computer-related hardware can be written off against income tax. That's a BIG inducement NOT to go with the ham option. Beyond that, digital does not lend itself to experiment or home brew where my interest lies.
