  • It was too much fun hearing how much E hated this video on the greatest hits DVD.

  • @Princegweedo He has a book?!

  • @BalloonsExclmatnMark They refer to the concept as 'Multiverse'

  • This sounds just like Yesterday - Atmosphere

  • @PJSkitszels hip hop artists are notorious for taking bits, beats, and the sort from other songs. This song's album was released it 1997 whilst that album and song was released in 2008.

  • @PJSkitszels cuz they took it from these guys!

  • @ididyomommy Atmosphere didn't "take" it, moron.

It wasn't even an Eels original, it's from a Gladys Knight & The Pips song Love Finds Its Own Way.

Music evolves. Who "took" what is irrelevant.

Both samples work in Yesterday and Susan's House.

  • the summer dayz!

  • @paranoidbeatle Listen here, Bucko: That was not me, that was my sister who happened to be logged in as me. Don't you ever, EVER call her a dickhead. It was a simple comment, so why are you lowering yourself to childish name calling? Please- I'm dying to know.

  • @FanpiresLabyrinth. Dickhead!

  • this sounds a bit like the festival song by pez

  • @FanpiresLabyrinth Yeah this is where they sampled that bit from :)

  • @FanpiresLabyrinth hip hop artists are notorious for taking bits, beats, and the sort from other songs. This song was released before that single.

  • I kind of wish I knew someone named Susan so I could play this song and walk to her house.

  • this song is strangely intoxicating

im puttin it in my favourites

  • Can someone tell me if the "wow" sample is from the old game "Theme Park"? It sounds like the sound when you place a new ride...

  • 5 thumbs all the way up!!!

  • this is kind of like gorillaz

  • @mduckworth It's rather the other way around, when this song was released the Gorillaz didn't exist yet :)

  • The video and song is dark but its soo therapeutic, in a weird way, to listen to.

  • 'that must be her sister, right?!'

  • where does this piano track come from? cuz atmosphere sampled it for "sunshine" be curious to know

  • @macthesack

Gladys Knight & The Pips - Love Finds Its Own Way

  • love this song

  • totally strange, i'm going over to susans house soon, she's my auntie and i'm dropping some potatoes off for her on my way to the pub, i'm gonna have to sink a few pints at the bar and ponder over this one, very odd, is this god sending me some kind of message?

  • @boylosh1 : lol, it's funny because all of what you've written here sounds like it could be a verse in the song. Just compare it with the three spoken verses in the song and you might see where I'm coming from.

Unusual song, but it's got something. Like "Novocaine For The Soul" has too. I can see why these guys took off in the UK during the Britpop era.

  • @AndyB1286 tell ya whats even stranger, my auntie susans been shagging the local mechanic and when my uncle jimmy found out he went round on saturday morning (another eels song) and put the grease monkey in hospital and when he got arrested he told the police she's "the only thing i care about" (another eels song), weird man, i've gotta get outa here, i like birds.

  • Nighmare guaranteed.

  • this song is strange

  • @idontnoproductions It's a comment on the evils of the world. Not that I like EELS, I just understand.

  • for some reason i imagine that susan is a tentacle monster living in a house that E wants to visit. maybe it's the tune. E is fucking nuts

  • its probably already been said but does anyone happen to know which city/streets he's talking about in this song?

  • I love this song, is my favourite.

  • is thia christian band?

  • @beagleboy547 Definitely not!

  • @beagleboy547 quite on the contrary i think haha

  • good stuff, btw, if you guys like electro-house, n styles similar to fast foot and dj solovey, check out my channel for some good new music

  • I think this song is about how the world is screwed up almost to the point of surreality. That and susan, of course, who I imagine is some dame!

  • I love the eels and i love this song

  • Love the song, but even though the girl with "brown hair sucks on a popsicle," she is seen as a redhead sucking a lollipop. Why?

  • The piano in this song is absolutely fantastic. :D I love the eels, went to see them on their last date of the world tour. He was hilarious.

  • That mean she is a teen.

  • Ummm pardon me?

  • @mccrackhed

    check out atmosphere - yesterday.

They sampled the piano.. great song also.

  • Love for ells, from Demnark. Mens a lot to mee

  • I saw them on 'Pinkpop' in 1997!

    Fantastic!

  • Love this song :]

  • sample is gladys knight and the pips - love finds its own way

  • susans hot

  • @shobba12345 That isn't Susan. If you'd bothered to listen to the lyrics, you'd notice it was the 'seventeen year old girl sucking on a popsicle'.

  • oh shiiiit! i have just got E's book for xmas from my two sweetest girls, and my beautiful wife. I have had a busy day, and am only 20 pages into the book. But, this book is so good, i am already thinking to myself "what happens when i finish this? is there more to be heard from the great E? E is such a genius. He can write the most beautiful lyrics.! im rambling on! power to Eels! peace!

  • E is looking a little Thunderbirds ish

  • Why does the piano line seem to remind me of True Colours?

  • both pez and atmosphere use this piano melody

  • Ah, on Yesterday right?

  • yeah

  • best eels song! hands down! so many good ones, but that one stands out!

  • Had no idea the frontman of Eels is the son of Hugh Everett (the man who first proposed the Many-worlds interpretation of multiple universes) :O

  • @ alexwozere, I feel like a compleet idiot that I have to ask, but what's the Many-wolrds interpretation of mulitiple universes

  • To simplify it immensely; its a hypothesis within quantum mechanics that proposes that there is an infinite number of parallel universes, one for each possible outcome of any event. It is one of _the_ most widely known scientific formulations of the 20th century. It's a shame you've been sleeping in your science classes, cause its actually pretty exciting stuff. I would have never heard of Eels if it weren't for the fact that E was the son of Hugh Everett.

  • ah... that accualy sounds familiar, I guess I've heard it in the golden compas (the books)...

anyway, I never sleep during science classses, but I'm fourtheen, and I've not heard this theory so far, next year I guess...

  • @BIasphemer that is so interesting.i love science and the eels.i guess they go hand in hand for a reason.because E is the son of a genius.

  • @Alexwozere - Oh my god. I was not aware of that!! Thanks for the info dude...!!

  • Read - what your grandchildren should know :)

  • it's called "things the grandchildren should know" not what your grandchildren should know

  • Yes it is, apologies, I've only just finished reading it, I blame the vino lol.....

  • lol

  • Comment removed

  • woah that video is kinda freaky but so real. who's susan tho? is she the blond who keeps popping up? shes a stripper or something?

  • Susan is actually one of Es ex girlfriends. Im reading his book. Literally just read that part 10 minutes ago.

  • @Princegweedo What's the name of his book?

  • @msDramatistic its called THINGS THE GRANDCHILDREN SHOULD KNOW. I highly recommend it.

  • hombre lobo, me recuerdas a tiempos mejores, te hecho de menos

  • crazy old lady ftw

  • one word to this: MAGNIFIQUE...

  • Try reading E's memoirs "Things The Grandchildren Should Know" damn he's had a depresing life!

  • basically they rock.

  • i <3 this song

  • remember this being played to death on german radio stations! even bfbs got in on the act but hey its a great track!!!

  • gee the guy in the vid is one ugly mf - great tune shite vid

  • haha

    "pez-festival song"

    stole the beat.

    good song though

  • Actually eels also sampled this beat from a song from the 70's

  • Awesome song don't make like that anymore!!

  • eels. brilliant songs. crap videos.

  • yeah i was tinkin this coulda been better......

  • pez- festival song. awesome song that uses this as the sample in the song. its mad as

  • been watching this continuosly for the past couple of days cuase i havent got the album yet and this is a brilliant song but it does annoy me how the vid doesnt seem to be in time with the music by a second or so

  • same

  • The Eels Are A Good Band

  • going over to mickey mouse

  • i wish there was a susan's house i could goto

  • I <3 this song and uhm... his lips :$ Srsly, they're sexy, aren't they?! :P

  • ???????????

  • On the commentary track on the "Useless Trinkets" DVD, E rips this video nonstop. My favorite part is his take on one of the extreme close-up shots of his inexplicably blissed-out face: "Now, is someone performing some sort of sexual act on me, or am I on heroin?"

  • Have any of you guys read Mark Emmersons (lead singer/pianist/etc). Its called Things The Grandkids Should Know. Its great. Honestly check it out. -Lintu

  • it's Mark Everett, nice one.

  • Shit, my mistake. Sorry about that.

  • Yep, just finished the book. I really liked it!

  • +++

    lovely... so lovely...

  • Saw these play in Reading back in 1998 i think. One of the best live bands that year.

  • i found out today this was by the eels not beck....... i feel like a fool.

  • Hey,no worries. They operate in similar fields sometimes-Easy mistake to make

  • Meh, that's happened to be with dozens of songs. xP I trust Limewire too much.

  • i like the piano in this song

  • One of the greatest songs ever made - EELs rule, but yea this video just feels caustraphobic.

Perhaps it would of worked better combined with shots of London or New York.

  • Great song. Yeah the videos a bit crap but what can you do, hard song to make a video for and MTV wouldn't show it if it didn't have one.

  • A bit ignorant?I'm sure he knows the implications of his lyric.

  • its "it must be her sister"

    your ignorant

  • ok, my bad, it must be her sister is a bit ignorant,i say that because its not exactly rare in this day and age for someone that young to have a kid.

  • It is about a young mother pushing a pram.

The "it must be her sister, right ?" is showing his disbelief at her age.

  • Yeah no shit, are you stupid or something?! i KNOW its showing disbelief at her age, im saying how can you show disbelief at something so common place?

  • Songs from the early nineties man, wasn't as commonplace as now. Also depending on your background you might not have been as aware of the prevalence of teenage pregnancies.

  • A classic Eels tune. Just awesome. I love the bit starting at 2:22, "Here comes a girl with long brown hair....".

The video sucks, though (as E stated, too). ;)

  • THIS IS A GREAT SONG

  • And I keep walking.

    Nice.

  • this song is just graet :o) love it so much :oD love the radio-type voice

  • love how he closes his eyes when singing 'going over to susan's house'. It's really beautiful, calming and just makes you feel good : ]

  • great song but this video clip doesn't suit the vibe at all. shame

  • E has a great singing voice (reference Lucky Day in Hell) when he feels the song merits it. He sings the song the way he wants to... He IS the one who wrote it and is allowed the chance to sing it in his own way. We should be blessed that there are artists still expressing themselves outside of the context of what might be most acceptable or accessible. Funny that they have achieved GLOBAL recognition with such a "bad" singer. Genius and songmanship win again. Grow up and flame elsewhere.

  • E hates this video.

  • Really? Why's that?

    It's one of my favourites.

  • He was pissed with the whole concept of both showing with the video and telling with the song. He thought it should be one or the other.

  • I think E's got a point there. To me the song is great and I find myself reading the comments after a minute or so because I don't feel I am missing anything. The song says it all and does it all.

  • why do you talk like a caveman you stupid fuck. E's singing this song the way it's supposed to be sung, which is beautifully.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  • E ha one of the finest, melancholic, tragedy soaked voices I have ever had the immense pleasure to experience, along with: Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Mark Lannegan, Jeffrey Lewis and Bonny Prince Billy. Good stuff.

  • shut up

  • 3 38 seconds.... good lip synching?

  • I always keep thinking that this song is about all these crazy things thats going on with these peoples minds.

  • sooooooooooooooo good

  • The eels reminde technoe rock sort of like Brian eno as my dad puts it if you know who taht is

  • I actually agree with your dad then. Brilliant song from a brilliant man with a brilliant band.

  • With a brilliant album, too ;)

  • luff <3

  • its that baseline.

    its epic.

  • same for me jimjam. Im into electro-shock blues at the moment. It'll be souljacker or something next month probably. Also like his first ever album A Man Called E - very cheesy and fun to listen to.

    Genius E, absolute genius...

  • A very underrated and talented band.

  • Fantastic, original song. I think that the true Eels fans are those who not only appreciate the Beautiful Freak era, but look past it too - There's just so much good Eels.

At the moment I think I'm into Blinking Lights most, but my favourite Eels album is constantly changing... =]

  • great song and that book he wrote is very good

  • I saw His book in the library, didn't know what it was about only that I'm writing my autobiography for my grandaughter Lizzie. Now I know what its about?

  • i think the main reason i love Eels is because of how much they resemble the later Beatles sounds...in a way...

  • ermmm...yh.........(i luv the eels 2 but the part about the beatles.....*no comment* i dont get wat u mean)...

  • Susan is E's ex-girlfriend. Apparently when this song was released Susans boyfriend kept ringing her up saying "im fed up of listening to the that bloke singing about your fucking house every 20 minutes!"

  • Wooow i am really surprised by this band...they have such a weird sound...its great!!!

  • Ah, E in the Good Old Days!

  • As compared to when? I thought E is still amazing :). But yes, I agree, this song is so awesome =P

  • great video :)

  • good old doctor martin boots.

  • Buy Mark Everitt's book " Things the grandchildren should know " it explains all his songs and brilliantly too. Including this one about his sister Susan.

  • his sister susan? wtf his sister was called Liz, this is about an ex girlfriend. and the book is amazing one of the best ive read, and instantly made me a fan of the eels and the reasons why E makes his music. superb band.

  • His sister was called elizabeth not susan, Susan was a girlfriend who lived a good distance away, so walking would be difficult to do. Great book though, read it in a day.

  • nice

  • I see you're from Ireland. This reminds me of my childhood too! It was always on the radio

  • i know! god bless the ninties!! i've just found out they're playing two shows in Dublin...

woo hoo i can have a trip down memory lane!

  • I saw them in the Olmpia years ago, my first gig it was deadly gonna try catch the one on Paddys day this year too

  • see ya there!!

  • this song just reminds me of my childhood...

    wow i love eels!!!

  • I've always loved this song! Beautiful freak is a classic.

  • I love eels.

This song took me awhile to like.

But then my friend played it obsessively whenever I went over to her house. So, I was kind of forced into liking this song.

    And now I love it.

  • I have always loved this, but seeing and listening is beyond brilliant.. I love eels, and my beloved monster.

  • yeah my beloved monster is very very great. been listening to that song for years and still loving it every time I hear it.

  • electric shock blues and beautiful freak are some of my favourite albums ever, my mum always used to play them to me when i was little, they are ingraineed in my mind.

  • Ages ago me and my friend changed the lyrics of this song to fit what we do lol

  • Whhooo, trippy...

  • Strange but fantastic..love em...not known in france!

  • the whole world did here them. Over 10 years ago !

  • omg today is the first day i heard eels and they r fuckin awsome!!! i wish the whole world can hear them.!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • The childrens cheer at 1.49 sounds like the cheers on Theme Park when you build a ride...was this sampled? Just something that's bugged me for years

  • the song lyrics are brillant, they make my soul weeep! the Eeels are brillant lyrics writers, go listen to need some sleep or my beloved monster.

  • This band had a vision of the hell we now live in.
