They only did two cuts for each song during this recording. This was recorded specifically for Sheffield Labs around the time the Compact Disc first came out. There's actually two different CD's on Sheffield Lab. "Direct" were the first takes and "Direct Plus" were the second takes of each song. I have both CD's and I bought the first one back in 1987 at Tower Records in San Francisco.
@keepkk "Direct" has 5 cuts. "Fanfare/That's why I sing," "And you know it," "Squib Cakes," "What is Hip?," and the last song is a ballad that I forgot the name of. It was written by Michael Jeffries who was the lead vocalist at the time. I do know that this same ballad is on the "Dinosaur Tracks" CD. I'll find out later and get back to you. The "Direct Plus" CD has a couple of extra bonus tracks(7). I believe they are the second takes of "Squib Cakes" and "What is HIp? if I'm not mistaken.
Yes, that's Chester on B-3, and it's definitely a -3 series Hammond (B-3/C-3/A-100). They had a lot of direct signal from the organ's preamp mixed with the Leslie. I like a touch of DI off the preamp sometimes, but I never use this much. Makes the organ sound like it's gargling.
@TheB3Nut I agree this is a good take for the most part of a DI with Leslie rotor off to the left. Sort of blends Auger style presence with basic Leslie use. I can see where when you have so much in your face music going on, the rotor phase ebbs too much to hear all the notes Chester's playing. Perhaps a Tone cabinet along with the Leslie would have minimized the gargle as it would've been acoustically picked up by the Leslie mics somewhat.

Hadn't heard this before, but it's a major disappointment compared to the original on "Back to Oakland." All the energy has been sucked out of it. And is that Chester Thompson or someone else on organ? It doesn't even sound like a B3.
@gdf55 You are absolutely right on that my friend. I really don't understand why it is not permissable to upload that version. The original studio recording was a jaz funk masterpiece. The music throughout the piece progressed into an unbelievably insane break that would have us dancers in a frenzy. It was used in House mixes at the underground dance clubs during the late 70's and early 80's.
Haha how can anyone be disappointed! I love this version, the original is cool too, of course, but hell, this has so much epic jazz/fusionism over it, that i can't believe someone gets disappointed when hearing it!
Would love to post that song but it isnt on this release. Even if I tried posting it off the back to Oakland CD WMG would most likely yank it immediately anyway.
