Making Portrait Masks

What did you use to give the mask a smooth finish before applying the collage?

@CFJernigan to smooth, I put on a thin layer of plaster, then sand it, then gesso, sand.

I have done quite a few self portraits. Made a reverse mold, so I didn't have to keep making them on my face.
