Are you sure shoe size and pedal choice doesn't matter? Because I have size 12 Nike 6.0 shoes with a DW 7000 pedal and I can never master this technique. Hell, I can't even do the technique (I can in socks). No matter how differently I do it than you I can't get it right. I always have to do it with socks and (sorry to be disgusting) my big toe keeps scraping against the chain holder on the pedal and my toe is bleeding like shit! Is there a solution to this or do I just need a new pedal?
@bball98038 I saw him do it where the ball of foot (BoF) is at the middle of the pedal and his heels are hanging off. It's not about the pedal, it's how your foot moves. I'm not an expert on heel toe, but I've found that it's not HEEL-TOE. It's really BoF - TOE. Try this: lift your foot off the ground and have your foot relaxed (heel is higher off the ground than BoF), drop foot, BoF hits, roll foot like a tire, heel hits, toes lift w/ heel on ground, BoF hits. STAY RELAXED and have fun!
Should one learn this technique barefoot, or does it matter? The ballistic bass drum system really stresses learning it barefoot first then use wrestling shoes. Although as Jared showed us, footwear really doesn't matter. A good laugh followed the snowboard boot. lol!!
Hey Jared, I have two technical question about your technique. The start/finish position is so that the beater remains on the head after the second hit so it will muffle the sound. Isn't this a problem ? Is it not gonna sound weird and different than the first hit ? Also, this start/finish position means that you have to keep your foot on the toe side. Wouldn't it be really tiring after a while because you would have to constantly tense up your leg to keep it on the toes ? Many thanks
@Parsifaal You don't literally have to keep it on the toe. If you're a drummer that plays heel up naturally, this won't be all that odd to you. But if you're a drummer that naturally plays heel down, then yes, it might take a bit getting used to.
Mind. Blown. ive seen cobus play the heltoe and i know its an awesome technique.. but i didnt know what the actual motion was, and what actually happend..... its crazy
Can someone explain to me which part of the foot that actually comes in contact to play the first beat? I can do the motion perfectly off the pedal, if I play the first note with my foot completely on the pedal and hit the first with my heel it sounds great and I can do them really fast. But if I am hitting my heel on the plate or off the back of the pedal I either get 1 note or nothing at all.
take off your right shoe, or whatever your dominant foot shoe is? let me pick from my other 3 feet... oh wait, I'm not a spider! that could be quite offensive to us lefties, Jared! :-b
the only other thing is, I wish you'd demo'd with a high heel!
can you upload some examples of how we can learn with both left (hand and foot) for the right-handed and with both right for the left-handed? sorry about my english.. ahahah it would be nice, becouse with my left foot i'm really...a pirate with no leg xD
Can you give me directions to setup the bass pedal? I tried the heel-toe and it doesn't bounce back sufficient enough for me to do the toe movement. I'm using yamaha electric drum, is that the problem? Thanks
I love this technique, when I was playing my friend said it was impossible because his feet were longer, I told him what you said except I pointed out that all it is is just allowing the pedal a slight bit of time to bounce up before tapping back down to go to starting position. When he understood that he could do it too. This video helped a lot. Thanks you Jared :)
"You'll never ever actual play it that slow, thats actually ridiculous." haha! Great tips! I was always trying to start with the beater off the head for some reason.
I am a "heel up" player, and I always use heel-toe technique for my doubles.. so it's not just for the heel down players.. anyways, creativity is a key to success
@a7xsuperfan897 Personnaly i can do this technique so for me, play in shoes is much more easy but in socks that not impossible but its a different thing
Jared: Take off your shoe. Yeah, yeah that's it. Oh, your pants are in the way just take those off too. That shirt is slowing you down, lets just take it off. There we go, heel-toe technique time.
actually what i have discovered when i am practicing this technique that i make 1st hit while dropping my heel down, i make that hit with my toe, and the second one i produce already when heel lays down on the pedal. is that ok? i mean is there any difference and what are advantages and disadvantages of this type of technique?
Hey, just started watching all your videos, there awesome, thanks, been drumming for about 6 years feel in a good place but long story short fallen in love with it again and I wana get a new kit. Do you have a suggestion of a mid price range kit seeing I don't have a job but a really old sounding one, would be grateful for a reply.
thumbs up if uh have a muscle problem in ur legs and cant move ur ankles and the only way u play ur bass drum is either sliding or just pushing the pedal down and thats the best way for you, but heel to is still the right way!
@vandal357 The tension of the bass-head, the tension of the spring, the lenght of the board/ and your foot, distance beater from the head, etc all have influence how hard/ easy it is to play.
Do this need a long pedal? Mine are not and when I try the first part of the motion i do not have enough space on the pedal and my foot hits the floor
@xCessivePresure no longboard needed. you don't play the stroke with the heel, you play it like a heel up stroke, and you drop your heel at the same time as you do that stroke. the second stoke comes from the toes
Hey Jared. I'm a completely beginner drummer, I just bought a Dxp 5 piece drumset. I hardly know anything. I know what ghost notes, accents, parts of the drumset are, and stuff like that. Personally, I think the Heel-Up (Sliding, Swivel) is better than the Heel-Toe.
Heel-Up has more power, control and faster than the Heel-Toe in my opinion.
