Creativity is not something you can own, one may hit a beautiful creative streak and then become stuck in that groove out of attachment, as soon as that has happened then creativity has flown off to find someone else.
@ushojedi Quite a good answer to those who like artists, and not only songs (I perfectly know it's no logical, but maybe psychological, because when I like some songs from a special artist, and then this artist makes something strange, I have to try to understand it, no matter what it is).
Btw, he is the kind of guy who likes meeting people, around a glass of bourbon, so you should just try I think! tell me what stands out.
It's the era of new dances by great, eccentric musicians, I suppose. First it was Thom Yorke, now it's Tom waits. Well, I think its a sign of the times, baby, let's roll with it.
In a top secret experiment in 1949 pioneering geneticists attempted to combine the DNA of Howlin' Wolf, Lee Marvin and a kindly brain surgeon. This was the result.
The Ancient Greeks were wrong about immortality. What makes life amazing is because no one gets to live forever. That's the truth, not a concept created out of fear, like immortality.
@beaulieu4008 I'm just saying that not all the ancient Greeks believed in immortality. Especially philosophers etc were very sceptic about it. Even the "official" religion did not believe in immortality in its christian sense. The classical world is very interesting actually ;) Tom Waits rules.
@2ndnickthegreek992 How do you know? Anyway. People tend to go through life believing in different things - one day you believe in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, then the next day you don't. I hope I didn't confuse you, and made you think I was saying that I thought all Ancient Greeks believed in immortality - where you got that notion out of what I wrote is beyond me. The idea of immortality must have spread like wildfire. Lately, I think Love is just a myth. Concepts like these are human.
@beaulieu4008 Well, I've studied a little ancient Greece (I dont't claim being a prof or smth of course). Personally, I think that the belief in immortality is due to our fear of death. Nevertheless, one can surely achieve immortality through his work, e.g. Shakespeare is still alive somehow. ;)
@2ndnickthegreek992 The Ancient Egyptians believed that the afterlife was more important. We really do not know. Remember when you studied that Pluto was a planet? Doesn't matter what you study - it's all made up. We must discover for ourselves and not give ourselves over to "authority." This is how you get FUK-ed. LOL Immortality isn't being afraid of death, it's being afraid of being forgotten. I wonder who made up the notion of being forgotten. What if the aim was to be forgettable.
If I run into Tom I will draw a coposite sketch, but I am so so at rendering.I wish though he would go back to making more poignant videos, like when he did I don't wanna grow up.I know he is older, and a busy cat,but his songs are so discriptive, and rich with imagery.I can"t stand when a director has just the singer doin a diddy.I know what he looks like when he performs, and when the video says nothing,it diminishes the expression. The man is my favorite artist of all time.Jesse Dylan however...

Brilliant track and video from a legendary man! One of the most inspirational musicians to ever exist, got the new LP from my record shop earlier, can't wait to place the needle on it. Big up mr waits!
I'm a big Beefheart fan but this owes more to Howling Wolf, I'd love to hear the Wolf cover this. But to call Waits a copycat is ignorant as can be. This is awesome!!

TOM WAITS IS A FRAUD. Since Swordfishtrombones he has been ripping off the gloriously dishevelled sound of Captain Beefheart and making a stack of money out of it. Waits admits to being influenced by Trout Mask Replica, but it's more than an influence, it's plain theft and it's a disgrace. Shame on you Tom Waits. You're borrowed talent is but a twinkle in the good Captain's eye.
@insensiblegradations I take Tom Petty's view on music which is basically that all music comes all other music and that everybody copies everybody and everybody copies the first caveman that made music. This is when he was told to sue RHCP. So no, I highly doubt Tom Waits consumes Captain Beefheart's albums and vomits out his own music. He makes his own music, just like everyone else.
@insensiblegradations Well if you know enough about Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart (who are 2 of my favorite musicians) then you would know that there are many differences between the two. Foremost the instrumentals, Beefheart hated rhythm and hypnotics, Tom Waits' music is far more rhythmic. Tom Waits has said (as you pointed out) that he was influenced by Beefheart, and while Beefheart was a brilliant man he was far from the first music to sing in the style he did. So he must be a Fraud too.
@Zarncar Yes,well we know Howlin Wolf kick-started that gravelly voice thing and Don Van Vliet latched on to it and made it something else. But Waits's discovery of the big gravelly voice thing came mid-way through his career, as did the 'primeval' recording sound, and thereafter mined that sound such that you could mistake some of his work for Beefheart's, and Waits is considered to be a pathbreaking musician. Any lesser known musician than Waits would be dismissed as a copyist.

She found that she was shivering slightly, en realized it was only because the fire had gone down and the room was growing chilly. At last in the park, with the wind like ice on their faces, and a glitter of frost on the dun-colored grass, they were alone. The grass crakling beneath her feet, the trees bent by the harsh north wind. She found soup which she heated
@jamesegnac Ya well just before she's gone from lung cancer we can ask her how that worked out for her. Somebody outa tell her impersonation comes from talent.
It of course could be argued, but Tom Waits is the savior of human existence, like bacon wrapped around scallops, or perhaps the sound that is made when one slams a finger in the car door, or perhaps it is fact and cannot be argued, because arguing would defeat the purpose of nothing to begin with, and also, I'm drunk.
I love listening to Wait's music chronologically and watching how he changes and grows over time. He never completely did away with the sound from his earlier years either. He just layered on top of it until he created what we hear today. His music matures with him...and he continues to perfect and tweak it. He is his music is him. He's like a ripening fruit that is never fully mature and only gets juicier with age.
@MaxxieFelan People who constantly say Tom Waits should've been the frontman for a metal band need to realise that we doesn't need another cliche metal band, there's enough of them already and Tom is only one - as you say - in his own genre of music. :D
this is a very low budget video. it was probably filmed in tom's backyard with his daughter shining a flashlight on him. not that there's anything wrong with that.

And we sit by and watch him ripen and ask "how can it get any better than this?" And then he shows us.

I love listening to Wait's music chronologically and watching how he changes and grows over time. He never completely did away with the sound from his earlier years either. He just layered on top of it until he created what we hear today. His music matures with him...and he continues to perfect and tweak it. He is his music is him. He's like a ripening fruit that is never fully mature and only gets juicier with age.

in a league of his own, surpassed Captain Beefheart, and Dave Van Ronk.

People who constantly say Tom Waits should've been the frontman for a metal band need to realise that Tom himself is a genre of music.

@MaxxieFelan Indeed, honestly I don't think that the instrumentation and musical patterns in metal could do Tom's amazing voice justice.

@MaxxieFelan People who constantly say Tom Waits should've been the frontman for a metal band need to realise that we doesn't need another cliche metal band, there's enough of them already and Tom is only one - as you say - in his own genre of music. :D
I need more tomwaitssongs bands than metal bands.

Remember that radiohead video where Thom York danced in front of a fence in black and white?
That, aged 30 years in a bourbon cask.

this is a very low budget video. it was probably filmed in tom's backyard with his daughter shining a flashlight on him. not that there's anything wrong with that.
