@all who change strings just ever 3-4 months: Get some Elixir strings, because they sound way longer good than any other strings due to the "nanoweb" technology.
Change your strings when they start to sound dull, god damn dude your little "finger trick" is appalling, I clean my fucking strings like a human being.
really good tutorial!!helped me a lot...cause I was sitting the other day and my 5th string(A) snapped..my teacher was like give more tempo to the song, more, more and SNAP!!!
@ArtzFret The reason that happened is because your guitar wasn't set up for a heavier gauge string, which put tension on your neck. I advise you get new strings. Whether they are Lites (.09) or Mediums (.11) have your guitar set up for that gauge.
... and i got really scared because I didn't know what to do after I saw that, and I know that when i removed all my strings at a time, the neck bend backwords, but my question is... do I keed the new strings just like that on the guitar because they will stretch and the neck will return to its normal position, or do I remove them and put (correctly) a strings with the same gauge has the others I had previously on my guitar? :S
today when i replaced my previous strings (.09) on my electric guitar ( a Cort X2), before i replaced them I had to remove all my previous strings at a time becaus i needed to replace a pickup too, and when i putted the new strings (.11) on the guitar and tuned them, the back of the bridge (wich is something like the bridge of a Stratocaster, but not leaning on the body loke the Strat bridge) was like 20º high than it should... (continuing on next comment)
Thanks a crapload dude. I bought my first electric ( squier strat) the other day and I broke a string and when I went to change it I had no flipping idea how to change it and after like an hour of looking at manuals online, your video was the only thing that helped. And the DR strings sound way better than whatever was stock so thanks!!
I dunno maybe using different strings and finding what works best for you would be the best brand but then we couldn't bicker over personal preferences now could we?
Im not professional, but It won't damage it , cause if you take off maybe 3+ strings, well It could be a problem. Also It depends a lot which string broke, cause thickest has "biggest tension",so if It was thickest well, it may be little problem, but if other string is broken, everything should be ok, but take new strings as soon as Its possible!:)
@imadey0utube its not necessarily BAD but it can screw up the concave/convex of the neck so IF you need to take of all the strings do it 1 at a time and take your time.
@imadey0utube dude it wont as long as you don't rip all of them off instantly. remove them 1 by one and if you replace them with lighter gauge strings/higher gauge strings it will make it more concave or convex
@elwadeo12sg Yeah. Really bad idea, If you took them all off at once. Then the neck would go from having tension, to absolute no tension, Then back to having tension again, Which could break the neck or crack it.
i've been breaking string alot lately i'm not sure why and my dad also got me elixir string which after some research said they were farely pricey and some said they sound dead right out of the box i'm not sure if i should use them or return them. Any Suggestions
I tried changing the strings on my strat today and haven't changed them before. Had the guitar for like a year now (stupid to leave the strings on that long I know) but I've only ever changed strings on a stopbar tailpiece before. I've got a problem where my strings seem to be stuck in the bridge and won't pass through the body. I've tried pushing the ball ends with a srewdriver and pin etc but they are really tight in there. If anyones got any suggestions I'd really appreciate it :)
@rachelspease Um i used a small screwdriver but i guess you could use things like some cocktail sticks and pins and things to dislodge the balls. I just pushed the screwdriver into the bridge and tried to wiggle the ball ends until they got a bit more loose. Took a little while to do on mine but i guess it just depends on how tight they are.
yeah! changing guitar strings every month???!! i just got to this video 'cause my high e string snapped! but i think you don't really need to change it like every month or every time it gets rusty, my acoustic guitar's strings are a little bit rusty but they sound good and they're like that for a year and it didn't broke or something.
DR strings suck, just put some on my guitar and i didnt even get to tuning my guitar, as soon as i started to tune, the 6th string broke, nothin like ordering new strings and waiting on them for a week and playing your guitar for a whole 0 minutes
great video n great advice justin thanks :) and yes i chgange my strings constantly i play about 6 hours a day every day!! and change my strings once a week take em all off wipe my guitar down and string it up. i use a light/top heavy bottom set of d'addarios .10-.52 on my 2009 all american deluxe strat. well worth the 7 bucks every week to have great tone thanks for a great video and keep em coming :)
@triviumecj diva? lol to use your words"true rocker" true rockers are very specific about their tone and their setup. i suppose u figure jeff beck, or slash, or even buckethead play a huge gig with strings that r dead n lost most of their tone? lol what a joke somehow i think they prolly use fresh strings that have been stretched shortly before de show
Justin?? most videos that do string changes have close ups yea? plus you rant too much mate, how about just getting too it instead of making money on advertising the strings you use ffs
i have an electric guitar w/c look like an ibanez.. and, whenever i change its string, it always broke.. soo.. how can i change strings properly and how can i tighen it? thanks for answering ^^,
@joeyrotten101 Hmm, i don't have that problem. Maybe you say they do because you don't put them on your guitar the right way. If the strings are on your guitar you need to get them tight in your tuners by pulling them. Then they don't go out of tune. Thats my experience.
@joeyrotten101 Haha. I know many people have this problem, had it too when i began playing but when you learn to do it the right way you don't have this problem. So don't call me a beginner when i say i don't have this problem. Ofcourse it depends on the guitar too but if you have a nice guitar you should be able to stay in tune right from the beginning after you put new strings on the guitar.
@EricClaptonFan24 I was told this by my guitar teacher before i knew that my guitar did actually detune by itself, hes been playin for longer than youve been alive ,it doesnt matter how you string the guitar the strings stretch after you play them a while and go out of tune, maybe you just dont notice it...
@joeyrotten101 Would you please stop? Ofcourse i would notice. And when you don't trust my ears, you can trust a tuner. Maybe your teacher said it because many beginners have this problem. Get real, legends as Tommy Emmanuel and Clapton change strings before every gig, do they go out of tune when they play live. Maybe YOU are the beginner. Go to google and search: keeping new strings in tune. Choose the second link.
@joeyrotten101 Why is it so hard for you to understand? I don't have the problem, are you saying you i have that problem? I think i know my guitar better than you do.Look: watch?v=k3MehDVtwSg
The biggest fingerstylemaster ever. Stringing his guitar. After he strung it he pulls the strings to get them tight in into the pegs. And voila, in tune.
@joeyrotten101 Yes he stretches it, AND he gets them tight in the pegs. But anyway, if you are so opinionated just keep doing it your way. I'll just keep stringing my guitars and play it without having the tuning problems. Actually maybe you are the beginner. For years i string all my guitars every 2 weeks, i know what i'm talking about.
Yes. If you take the end of one of the large E strings and slide the round bit through the hole. The B string end will pop out. Also I didn't watch the rest of the video. He tells you thats its a common problem and how to fix.
What are the best strings for E-tuned high speed Metal with tight feel without metallic sounds (I want soft strings, if you know what I mean) that sounds good with very high distortion and treble?
Can anyone who plays Hardcore (i.e The Chariot, Everytime I Die) can confirm that buying 7-string guitar strings, and discarding the high E, is a good way to get solid strings for low-tuning? I'm not tryna play death metal or any shit like that.
Yep, I use baritone set (GHS 70-14) and tune to Drop Bb. Seven string sets are not as thick but work just as well. I would keep the high E in case you have another guitar that needs it.
no man, 7 strings are the same size. just get 10's if you tune down a half step or whole, and 11's for more, etc. if you're into really heavy strings, look into baritone strings.
@depletable It would work obviously, but you could just look for a pack of heavier gauged strings. Ask whoever the employee in your shop is what he recommends for your guitar type and just consider your options. Different gauges come with much different sound, you just have to find the one you like.
hey justin which video did you have that you mentioned DR strings and you weren't endorsed by them yet? there's somethign i need to watch in that video please thanks!
If you play everyday, and for a long time, so if you are in a band, have gigs, do recording in the studio or something you can change your Strings once a day.
Else you can change them a least once a month.
Usually they should not be rusty... if so simply change them....
to endure the string buy yourself a fastfret by GHS, a lotion that comes with a piece of material. clean the strings STRONGLY, then use the lotion, and your strings keep their quality two times longer.

Can anyone who plays Hardcore (i.e The Chariot, Everytime I Die) can confirm that buying 7-string guitar strings, and discarding the high E, is a good way to get solid strings for low-tuning? I'm not tryna play death metal or any shit like that.

yeah they are :)

Yep, I use baritone set (GHS 70-14) and tune to Drop Bb. Seven string sets are not as thick but work just as well. I would keep the high E in case you have another guitar that needs it.
whatUsaybob 2 years ago
there wouldn't be any problem, but you might as well buy a heavier package of six strings - you can get pretty heavy.
kevinm4435 2 years ago
no man, 7 strings are the same size. just get 10's if you tune down a half step or whole, and 11's for more, etc. if you're into really heavy strings, look into baritone strings.
muzapstar 2 years ago
@depletable It would work obviously, but you could just look for a pack of heavier gauged strings. Ask whoever the employee in your shop is what he recommends for your guitar type and just consider your options. Different gauges come with much different sound, you just have to find the one you like.

Stay away from 0.11 - 0.48. That' way too light strings. At least I think so, and you want to stay away from Dean strings.
Benjamiin91 2 years ago
0.011 is not too light, its medium. 0.012 and up is heavy. 0.09 is light.
LfunkeyA 2 years ago
dude 11's are higher than what most people use cause most use 10's and barely anyone uses 12's unless they're hardcore metal players
Boredguy82 2 years ago
dunlops are pretty good for metal. if you want flexebility, you probrably want nines or eights depending on your prefference

Fingernail clippers should work.

will my rusty stings be the reason my fingers are starting to hurt after playing for a while
mattysplev 2 years ago
?!?
If you play everyday, and for a long time, so if you are in a band, have gigs, do recording in the studio or something you can change your Strings once a day.
Else you can change them a least once a month.
Usually they should not be rusty... if so simply change them....
they arent that expensive oO

Yes AND you might be bending s lot.
devilsonga 2 years ago
to endure the string buy yourself a fastfret by GHS, a lotion that comes with a piece of material. clean the strings STRONGLY, then use the lotion, and your strings keep their quality two times longer.
