  • It is too Bad that the audio to this video no longer works......I really enjoyed listening to it when it did. I thank you for putting it up and keeping it up, I will see what can be done about it

  • no sound

  • MyBetty111...you damn fool -_-'

  • I really like the video, there was such a lovely hymn. But now there's no sound, could you return the audio, please?

  • I really like the video, there was such a lovely hymn. But now there's no sound, could you return the audio, please?

  • What is missing is an Extraordinary Form of Mass, Tridentine. The last time was 1996 and crowds were on the sidewalks. It was so popular that the then Bishop said never again in my Cathedral. That is wrong. They have Masses in all languages EXCEPT Latin. There should be at least one in our Cathedral, whether it be Tridentine or Novus Ordo. New Yorkers have a right and have demonstrated their attachment to this Form. Let;s see what Dolan does. Will he hear his flock?

  • Good vestments and incense are traditional Catholic things, nothing nutty about it.

  • No sound! I love the comments about vestments, incense etc. The Catholic Church is like a big tent... room for everybody and everything under the sun. Nut cases included. LOL

  • I'm sorry, I must be stupid but by adding the ''&fmt=18'' code to the URL I still don't hear sound. Can somebody post the complete URL WITH working sound here?

    Thanks in advance!

  • im so sorry, i love this video but the sound just doesnt work. The music is beautiful

  • Please up this one again WITH sound...

  • @limp1974 the sound was always there before. I'm also wondering where it went

  • I apologize that all of these people are giving you trouble. I found it very interesting.

  • Unable to get the sound to work.. Even after added the additional url...

  • MUST ADD THE '&fmt=18' AT THE END OF THE URL TO GET THE SOUND TO WORK!!

  • What happeend to the sound???? :(

  • I couldn't agree more. Do not complain about the bad video footage. I'm an organist myself and there's alot to be said about the wonderful organ at St. Patricks. Talk about power!! This is for people who value good music in the church! Want a tour of the church go on Sunday after mass.

  • can you re upload? the sound isn't coming back and this was a great video

  • I will find another video. Is the word bugger supposed to offend me? Chill out.

  • You like it, I don't--I will find another video. Next time, less emphasis on the ORGAN please./

  • No sound :( Any way to upload it again?

  • no sound :(

  • No sound !?

  • There is no sound. What happened?

  • You still need shots of the altar and the celebrants!

  • @MyBetty111 Let me offer my sincerest apologies that this video does not cater to your very specific interests. If you have a problem with it, go make your own video and sod off.

  • @TheMaestro42 LOL.. I like your reply to that person's comment. i was wondering, why would someone want to "see" incense?

Thanks for posting this video. It is something I could only dream of seeing otherwise. ;-)

  • @TVWriterGuy Why would anyone want to "see" incense? You're obviously not very familiar with scripture: "Let my prayer be set forth before Thee as incense..." (Psalm 141:2). "And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy [place], that the cloud [i.e. incense] filled the house of the LORD..." (1 Kings 8:10).

"And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power..." (Revelation 15:8). And so forth and so on. I too love watching a priest cense an altar..

  • @TVWriterGuy I'm glad to have given you the chance to see it. It is truly breathtaking. And this has nothing to do with your username, but I always thought

I'd be a great TV writer... if you're, uh, hiring. ;)

  • @TheMaestro42 Most of us these days are producing our own projects and using the Internet as a venue. So, in a sense, you already are a TV writer of the 21st century.

  • @TVWriterGuy Trying to photograph a church service is difficult, as some regard it as disrespectful in any event. Those videos which show specific things are often done in cooperation with the clergy, and not merely by someone in attendance. So, TheMaestro42 is entitled to our thanks for at least trying.

  • @MyBetty111

Hey I like it. Find another video.

  • @MyBetty111

I actually want to see and hear the organ. Go bugger off and make your own video then.

  • @MyBetty111 As for me the organ is one of my favorite parts of the church!

  • @MyBetty111 lol, i hope your being sarcastic

  • What are nuns doing in the processional? They are not offering the High Mass.

  • They're reading the Epistle and prayer intentions

  • Anyone else having trouble with the sound?

  • @refman2002 I'm not quite sure what's wrong with the sound. If it doesn't clear up soon, I'll try to find the original file and upload it again.

  • @TheMaestro42 Please do it, this song is amazingly performed

  • @TheMaestro42 Ok thanks. This is one of my favorites on here. I love the organ and song. Great shots of the towering organ pipes too.

  • yes, just a blip in the beginning then nothing....too bad, I love this version

  • @refman2002 Yep. no sound for me. It's worked in the past though.

  • @refman2002 what sound ??. What a beautiful church love to have been there but i had to work sadly cabbing.

  • @refman2002 The priests didn't want you to hear the cries of the altar boys....

  • somehing happened with the audio, I can't hear anything, this is one of my favorite carols, but the audio is mute

  • whats wrong with the sound?

  • If you have ever attended Christmas Mass at St Patrick's, you know what a wonderful event it is. Thank you for helping me relive that special moment. "O God builder and architect of this great city, may we always cherish your love in our hearts and may we see in this great city a reflection of the New Jerusalem. Amen."

  • I completely agree with "TheMaestro42" !!! It's always easier to criticize one's doing ! I notice that you (Tippymugs) have probably never been in a "national cathedral" ; for being french and living in Paris, i can asure you that Notre Dame Cathedral is always full of people taking videos.... as long as people respect, i don't see the problem !

  • oh my this is beautiful!

  • i went there about 2 weeks ago on a field trip and we got to go in the basement part, it was fun :)

  • Saint Patricks never disappoints me with there music. The organ is beautiful. One item I was visiting out when a mass wasn't going on and someone was just playing the organ, it was beautiful!

  • Hi, Where's this Cathedral? NY?

  • Watching this video makes me dizzy.

  • COOL !

  • Those timpanis put this over the top :D

    5 stars

  • i find them to be quite welcoming. What was your experience that have you a negative opinion?

  • This is a beautiful and St Patrick's is a beautiful cathedral; I would love to spend Christmas in New York.

  • there is nothing better than bein in a big Cathedral on Christmas...gives me goosbumps!

  • Is that a drum roll in the beginning? Because it ends right before the organ starts...

  • Yes, That's a Timpani.

  • A grand organ played by a great organist leading the congregation in the singing of the hymn "Adeste Fidelies" (Come Near O Faithful Ones)! All glory to Almighty God.

  • Comment removed

  • Venete Adoramus, Dominum!

  • Strange that there is a Catholic church in NY. Aren't all Americans Protestants?

  • are you being serious??

  • No, just joking. However, seldom do you see references to Catholicism in American movies, which might lead youngster to think it is so.

  • 24% of all Christians in the USA are Catholic...

  • 40% of all new yorkers are Catholic, it's the largest church in New York.

  • Thank you for enlighting me on the subject. In firlms and series, we only see references to Jews, Muslims and, of course, other Christian churches

  • Sister Act babbby!!! haha

  • Yes, but the choir resembles an Episcopalian o Pentecost Church

  • @swaingles You are correct. This is because it is a Novus Ordo Mass, not a Traditional Latin Mass.

  • And what about the ethnics of the population we are talking about? How many Americans, excluding people who have origins in Latin America, Ireland, Italy or France?

  • Were you born stupid, or is this an acquired talent of yours?

  • Wow, you certainly are rude! I was going to reply the same way, but that attitude would be actually stupid. I am sorry if I have offended you, but I am at a loss about the Catholic Church presence in the States, that's why I asked rather ironically in the first place.

  • New York is mainly Catholic due to Irish, Italian, Pureto Rician, Polish immigration.

Boston is mainly Catholic due to large Irish immiration.

I think Chicago has a large Catholic population.

  • i was in NYC for the first time ever yesterday and went to St. Patricks. it's a gorgeous cathedral. i wish i walked in far enoguh to see the organ

  • My Church History and US History teacher, a Benedictine monk of the monastery affiliated with my school, grew up in this area and said he remembers BUYING tickets just to go to midnight mass at St. Patrick's.

  • tres bon. ça rappel des souvenirs.

  • Worlds most unwelcoming and most unpleasant cathedral. and i have been to 109 different cathedrals!

  • Really? St. Pat's in NYC? I've never found that to be true. Oh well, different people, different experiences I guess.

  • Well, while I do not like the NYY and a lot of their fans, I truly don't think the cathedral is unwelcoming or unpleasant.

The only thing I don't like is that during mass, you have tourists popping in and out at the entrance.

  • I know a choir (my aunt is in it) and they were giving a performance there. They said that they were treated extremely rudely and it was a horrible experience. The choir had traveled all the way from here in Ireland and this was supposed to have been the climax of the trip.

  • who is the Organplayer?

  • Most likely, Donald Dumler though, there are several other Organists on staff there.

  • wow freaky interlude

  • That is called, improvising. The whole crew of St. Pat's Organists are some of the best improvisers I've ever heard.

  • My church sang this in Latin with full organ, harp, clarinet, trumpet and full men's chorus. The sound was so powerful that passersby on the sidewalk stopped in to see what was going on at church so late at night.

  • I truly wish I could hear that.

  • Amazing!! thank you for post the video...greetings from venezuela

  • I wish they could have done without the tympani at the beginning. It sounds like a freight train coming.

  • that was a tympani, i thought they were blasting the heat or something lol

  • One thing that I like about Christmas music, is that the organist at my church(St John's Worcester,MA) plays the organ loud, and the people actually join the choir in singing some of the most modern carols. I say that because my church sings a lot of hymns that date back to the late 1800's-early 1900's.

  • Yeah St John's RC church in my town is scared of waking someone or something during masses. I went to chrisymas eve there and it was so boring and quiet. This Hymn deserves a near full organ sound. When I play it at Old First I play near full tutti to introduce it, then back off a bit. It get's people to sing robustly knowing they have that backup of the organ.

  • What do you mean by St. John's RC and Old First? You have any of your music on youtube?

  • Why start off big and die down to 16, 8, 4, and 2? I usually start off with Full, 16-Mixtures with full Swell Reeds...then turn off the Pedal 16 and 8 reeds, leave the swell 16 and 8 reeds on, coupled to pedal. last verse i go back to the first registration, and add the biggest pedal reed for the last line

  • Any of you ever feel like shedding a tear when you hear this beautiful music?

  • yes, i cried the first time i heard this. it is so beautiful. and i'm a dude too. very moving.

  • Absolutely. This isn't just music, this is a true work of art. So inspiring and....and... you just can't put it into words.

  • Comment removed

  • What a magnificent instrument. That would have been so cool to be there in person!

  • The best way to take care of a pipe organ is to play it often and loud, st patrick's does not fail in doing that.

  • Not at all. The best from us humans to our God.

  • wrong...it's not loud enough.

  • It's not loud enought!

  • this is a work of art...and God

  • I wholeheartedly agree

  • Personally, I would go there just to hear that magnificent organ play. All I can say powerful and WOW!!

  • St. Patrick's is such a beautiful place, and I love attending Mass there. They probably draw 300 people to every single weekday Mass, and I don't KNOW how many are there on Sunday. And yes, there is a regular crowd of regular attendees. There is also the Mary Chapel, which is kept quiet, prayerful, and free of tourists. A wonderful, wonderful place.

  • I am not religious at all in any way, but this song is one of those that i really like, especially with all those pipes (the metal ones) behind it!!!

  • Totally agree with you!

  • Well, not being religious is perhaps a good thing. I am very spiritual, but not bound to religion. I am not Catholic, but I recognize the sacredness in this hymn and cathedral.

  • The cameras don't bother me but many ultra-traditional types would object and find it undignified. As a NY'er let me tell you that St. Pat's is a BIG tourist place and many in the pews are not even Catholics. Some of them contra the canon law even take communion.

The problem with cathedrals is they have no resident congregation and everyone is a stranger. Whatever your denomination find a smaller place of worship where like the sitcom CHEERS, everyone knows your name.

  • Love this!

  • Awsome ...thank you ..Glory to the LORD

    halelouya

  • you can maybe learn to spell hallelujah properly

  • Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon sa inyong lahat (Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone) from the Philippines!!!

  • cant wait i love midnight mass at my church its so beautiful

  • sorry silly me...i posted twice lol

  • I don't have the sheet music for this version of O Come All Ye Faithful, but thanks to this awesome video I have listened to this extensively and memorized it. I have been to St. Patrick's Cathedral and it is gorgeous and the organ itself is an experience. My next organ to visit..WANAMAKER!!

  • If I can hear it correctly I believe this is the david Willcocks arrangment. Beautiful! You can find it in the green book of Carols for Choirs.

  • i dont have the sheet music for this version of O Come all Ye Faithful but i've listened to this video extensively and memorized this version...I will be playing it this year for midnight mass at my church...it is absolutely gorgeous!!!

  • i'm gong to midnight mass this coming 24th!!!

  • This is wonderful!!!One day I will see this Mass.

About cameras...In Paris at Notre Dame,Saint Sulpice,Saint Eustache you CAN use cameras...And also in N.Y. at Saint Patrick and others giants and famous cathedrals around the world.Just in a little is forbiden.

  • the drums, the bells, and the great organ gave me goose bumps!!!! i wish we had a beautiful cathedral here in my area. :( instead i have to watch online. thanks for the clips of midnight mass!

  • what song is this ?

  • Take a look at the description.

  • O Come All Ye Faithful

  • Was this a service of worship, or a media event? Whoever taped it should have kept the camera still, and there were far too many digital cameras to suit me. Pretty, anyway.

  • As the title clearly states, it is the Midnight Mass, which is not a media event; though it is televised.

Who cares about the number of cameras there? It is a beautiful thing, and people want to remember it.

And as for the movement of the camera... you are welcome to go and record your own video, implementing whichever techniques of camera movement you so choose. As for me, I prefer not to stare at one fixed point in space for too long.

  • Dont listen to tippymugs..i love this video

  • when cameras are outlawed---only outlaws will have cameras...

  • Cameras aren't outlawed in church unless the priest or whoever makes up the rules to have camera's or not says "No cameras or video cameras"

  • It's weird that the Priest/Bishop needs bodyguards....very sad

  • wow, thats quite an organ there!

  • It's been called the loudest pipe organ in NYC.....and for good reason:p

  • just beautiful.

  • Vive le Christ !!!!

  • i have a question about catholic churches?

Does the priest spreech in latin during a church service?

  • Not entirely.

  • These days most Catholic Churches celebrate services solely in English. You find a few exceptions especially in more traditional or diverse settings. As such though the priest's sermon has never been in Latin as it is addressed to the people.

  • Where I live (Manchester, England) there is a church (Holy Name church) that does mass in Latin.

  • In fact Pope Benedict did approve the Latin Mass recently.

It'll take some years probably before many of the churches offer masses in Latin, but it is adopted and approved by the Pope.

  • well its still done i go to latin mass in edinburgh

  • Until the council of "Vatican II" in the 60s, mass was exclusively celebrated in Latin (except for the homely). Since then, masses are celebrated in the local language (English in England, French in France, etc...). However, there remains several places where Latin is used. Even in the "modern" masses, Latin hasn't totally disappeared. Several chants, prayers, litanies, are told in Latin.

    Ite, missa est.

  • no only if its at a tradentine mass!!

  • what does this mean?please excuse my ignorance

  • no course its not ignorant, non catholics wouldnt really be expected to know what the tradentine mass is. It basically means traditional latin mass! Now days the catholic novice order (new mass settings) are all done in english and are not really to my liking, I prefer the traditional latin mass which i sometimes attend in Edinburgh but this is not always possible for me.

  • tridentine, genius

  • LOLOLOLOL

  • LOL, he is some purist!

  • This in New Orleans?

  • Not even close. New York City.

  • Thankyou so much for sharing. I get goosebumps whenever I hear this organ or watch the Midnight mass.

  • I have played this organ...it took a LOT of paper work....ugh.... i did HOMEWORK just to play this oirgan.....it was AWSOME and i think i blew a eardrum...ow...AWSOME

  • I would love to visit this lovely Cathedral and hear that awesome pipe organ!

  • Thank you for posting this video. It is magnificent. I am sure that hearing this on video is but a shadow of the magesty of the night.

  • I'm going to be there for the St. Patrick's Day Mass in a few weeks. Can't wait!

  • Spectacular. Who is the arranger? The chromatic progressions in the final verse and organ finale cannot be described in words.

  • The arrangement is the most popular one by Sir David Willcocks. The finale is improvised.

  • We do an arrangement at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter Paul, Providence, RI by Sir David Willcocks with a 20 second trumpet fanfare and the organ blaring at the beginning. I have the recording but not put on YouTube in video form.
