I was looking for an ocarina to get this christmas, and then I saw someone play the tracks to a certain game with one of these. I wanted to see the facts about the instruments, and you did such with great skill.
So, thanks again from a 14 year old metalhead who wants to learn the guitar, sitar, and Ocarina! XDD
I really like the 'human organ' look of the MapAram ocarinas. I love the sound, but their aesthetics make me queasy. Would you want to but some human innards in your mouth?!
I would say look at it differently. If you really can't think of anything else, paint it a really weird color. Like dark blue, or yellow. That way, it won't look like an organ, more like a pallete of paint. XDD
Alas, this video was made in a time when my ocarina technique was not very good, and I've only had the ocarina for a few days. Check out the later videos I made with it.
But I can tell you one thing for certain - this Double ocarina is widely considered to be much better than the ones offered at STL.
I've heard that it may be better than the STL ones, however I may just start my doubles with an STL one, and then if I want to buy a Maparam, the main thing is the subholes... I am used to them in different positions, although I'm sure it might be easier the way Maparam and others have them...
Another thing is the quality of the look. Maparams look cheap (even though they are not) and like badly glazed clay, on their website... I'm sure that people are happy with their quaility though.
There is no hardship at all in adjusting to the subholes. I had ocarinas from STL before I got Maparam, and immediately I found the Maparam's subholes to be easier to use.
Maparam's design is plain and simple, because they are a professional instrument made to sound good, not just for looks.
I am left handed and i find it awkward to use the right hand subhole on my stl 12-hole are you left-handed? For some reason I think it is easier to cover two holes on one finger with my left hand than it is with my right hand. I am considering a focalink double (alto g), so do you think it will be easy to adjust to the new subhole placement? To be completely honest, I don't even know why I am posting this comment. It doesn't madder about the subholes when the quality of the ocarina is good =D
The Focalink does look nice, a couple of questions about it. What is it made out of (I'm assuming clay) and also why does it have an extra subhole on the high chamber?
Do you have a fingering chart for that one, so I can see if that subhole is actually used?
i just love the sound of the maparam ocarina. i wan to learn how to make one.mi want one but it cost a lot of money . i really want to make a perfect ocarina
It will be faster to save up for one than make one if you want to get yourself a very good ocarina ,lol.
Maparam's Soprano C, Soprano G and Alto C don't cost that much compared to other ocarinas, and they are excellent ocarinas. Try saving up for them :-) They are the best.
I tried to open the website but it says failed to open page :(

thanks!
And remember, I made this video 2 years ago when I was still a beginner. This ocarina is capable of so much more in experienced hands!

I really like the professional look of maparam ocarinas.

I'm just trying to help.

That sounds sonice, i'll have to look into getting one of those doubles or focalinks...which one would you reccomend?
OcarinaBrothers 3 years ago
Both are great, but different.
I think the Maparam Double is a bit better (but it's also more expensive).
Compare the sounds of the Maparam Double and Focalink Double and see what u prefer
kissing88 3 years ago
Okay, thanks. I like the sound of the maparam better

The color and the bulbous shape make it look like a child's toy.
Bateleur5 3 years ago
and then you are sadly mistaking a professional instrument for a toy :-P
kissing88 3 years ago
Well, I didn't say it WAS a toy, just that it looked like one.

How would you compare this to the Focalink double?
ajwchin 3 years ago
they are both high quality.
Focalink has a crisper, clearer tone.
Maparam has a warmer, mellower tone.
kissing88 3 years ago
Thanks. I went with the Focalink, mainly due to the price. Just ordered it. :)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
That doesn't sound very high quality at all... Strange, I think I will just get a double from STL Ocarina...

right or left handedness has NO effect on whether you can play ocarinas better or not.
Ocarinas are not right handed instruments. They are not left handed either.
You won't even notice the difference in subhole placement.
STL ocarina subholes are infamous for being difficult to use. It has more to do with the way they are designed, rather than where they are.
kissing88 3 years ago
Yeah, stl's are in an incovienient place....the ocarinas sound ok but i like the sound of these ones better
OcarinaBrothers 3 years ago
oh, and if its cost and subholes you're concerned about - check out Focalink's Double ocarinas =D
You'll love their design, and the subholes are in the way you like it =D

ElvenSpellmaker 3 years ago
It's made of clay.
The high chamber has an additional subhole to make it easier to play the F-sharp there. It will all make sense when you get it.
For fingering charts and specific questions, send an email to the email address at the Focalink site. He answers well!

Trial and error. I still havent managed to get the perfect voicing hole when I make my ocarinas
they sound like a dying shoe (yes I know, shoes don't make sounds...or die, but just use your imagination =P XD)
