@jghanson25 Thanks for the reply & info. Guess I said egg-crate foam as that was what initially came to mind but what I am actually going to be using is block foam that is similar but not bedding. Used in Pelican cases and such, I wont actually be cutting the polystyrene foam I see most folks using these hot-wire cutters for. I will give it a whirl and see what happens. Worst case I am out of the time it took as I have the materials on-hand. Thanks again
I built my own foam cutter, used it and am now done with it. So I'm selling it on ebay here's the item number 250928143444. It has been listed since Wednesday Nov 9, 2011 at 9 pm pst. Thanks.
Great design. Thanks. My project is to cut foam for 'lost foam' casting aluminum. I will probably make my foam cutter about twice your design, but with the same idea. Thanks again!!
Hey Cocoa, you can use almost any power source; there are videos of people using their RC airplane batteries. You could almost use a couple of D cell batteries. You don't have to have a powerful electric source-- like jg says, you only need a little electricity. Actually, his 2 amp battery charger would be the upper limit of the power you could use. More power than that might cause too much heat and flame, explosion, etc... Try a small power source first.
Hello jghanson25, thank you for your response, your help is much appreciated. I only bought the stuff to make the parts but have not bought the battery charger yet as I didn't know what it was so I am going to source it out next week. Thank you so much for your help. I will let you know how it goes, next is I have to get help from someone to put it together. :-)
@cocoahappy there are numerous ways to put these devices together. my design was just kind of a quick way to see if it would work. it does still work today but i am eventually gonna make a new and improved design. if you want to check out where i got the idea from you can. "Weekend Project: 5-Minute Foam Factory" with KipKay. his design is nice, simple, and efficient. that is the video. if there is anything else that i can help with i will be glad to do so. thank you
Hi there, I'm going to the hardware store and try to make this foam cutter following your instructions tomorrow. Sorry for the stupid question but what is a battery charger? Is it a car battery or something? Sorry I am a cake decorator and this foam cutter is the perfect tool for me to shape my styrofoams without using a saw which makes such a huge mess leaving all the loose bits of foam dust scattered everywhere which is a nightmare to clean up.
@cocoahappy first of all, thanks for using my video. im not sure if im too late to help you out but ill try my best. umm. the battery charger i used was one that is used for charging small car batteries or even ATV batteries. as long as you use a power source that puts out the voltage and amperage necessary to heat up the wire. and it should have aligator clips like the little ones i had. i hope i helped. if you have any questions about anything else feel free to ask. thank you.
@Comfortkingach i just used the tiniest string (E) off of a guitar. i first used a string that had already been used and broken off of one of my electrics but now i try to use new ones from a package. acoustic or electric. it doesnt really matter. as long as its one of the tiny ones. preferably E. if you want to get really technical with it, you could actually go to a hardware store and get some .010 diameter - 7 ohms/ft resistance nichrome wire. hope i helped!! thank you.
@Suicideispainless47 dude yeah. i even made a little plane already. just a glider but its still pretty sweet. i plan on making all kinds of cool stuff. maybe ill do a video to show some creations.
ummm.... lol

You may add a little steel spring to one end of the string just to make it tight for straight cutting.
