I agree with previous posters. I have a FT-897D and no doubt there are better radios out there with qiet receivers. I live in Europe. The worst place when it comes to go below 7 Mhz. Nevertheless after carefully tweaking the menus and settings, dps and other stuff, I think the Yaesu is a real fine radio and best bang for the buck. Still hope to put a dedicate HR radio next to the FT-897D. Perhaps the 480 or this one.
Why is everyone selling 590's so fast? Check out QTH.com and such sites. The Yaesu FT-897 (D?) is noisy, no doubt, but a whole lot more radio for the money overall than the 590. The 590 should be priced about $500 less than it is. One guy bought one and a few weeks later was seen trying to trade even-steven for a Kenwood TS-480AT. That tells you something. I'd take a Yaesu, Icom, or even Kenwood 480 or 2000 over that 590 any day. People are not keeping these radios. That speaks volumes.
The 590 is a fine device however it is a tank for mobile use. I noticed no efforts were made to reduce noise levels on the 897 and so see it a little unfair to make your new radio shine out. Its a little like comparing a tank to a mini but i think you would be very intrested in your findings if comparing the 590 to the affordable ft450 as i was very suprised. Again 590 is a great device but the 897 is far more practical for mobile and field work. MD6LET
From what you said on Video1 you have No PreAmp on 590 but you HAVE the PreAmp On the 897 so the comparison is not good, also I think you still have the NR on, on the 590 but not on the 897 so if I've got everything correct from what you say you need to have everything Turned OFF then it might be a good comparison
Yes I definately like the audio from the 590 (so long as its not too R2D2 that is...). Won't be able to look my 897 (or 817) in the face now...its all your fault ! James.

It sounds like there some DSP noise reduction turned on with the TS-590S, but not the FT-897. That would explain a lot, if it's true.
