Another thing that interests me is how the Spanish prefer to dub foreign films rather than use subtitles. Loach himself said the Spanish dubbed version makes no sense because the whole point of the film is the international nature of the militia with different languages. Do the Liverpudlians speak Spanish in a scouse accent?? ;~)
Yes. I think that dubbing films began for censor reasons during dictatorship, and now it continues because many many people grow seeing the films "tergiversed", like a tradition i don't know, but i know many others that change his mind when "discovered" subtitles films.
@durruti1936 Spain is not alone in dubbing foreign films. I don't like watching dubbed films but it's just as ridiculous as Germans speaking in R.P. in Valerie. Regardless of nationality I think must people who enjoy world cinema would prefer to watch them in the original language; however for some people this isn't an option and it's better that they are watching them dubbed than not at all.
One of my favourite films together with "Libertarias" by Aranda.
Loach has always produced interesting work for cinema and TV on working class themes - from a middle-class, Trotskyist perspective but I guess that's how these things work ;~)

I always understood it was a measure to preserve language, there are problems of that kind in Spain.
