@Bridgesc3 it didn't work on mine aswell and I got frustraded but I read an article and what you do is place your ipod on something padded (facedown) such as carpet, and with a couple of rolled up magazines hit it on the back a couple of times (hard) and you should hear it make like a whirling noise and it should take you to the main menu. I know it sounds crazy but it actually works! Mine has been showing the sad ipod icon for about two years now and it works just fine now. Good luck :)

I got mine to say "OK to disconnect" and when I connect it, it says "Do not disconnect". Windows installed the driver for it, but iTunes won't recognize it. Any suggestions?

Also, it restarts itself after a while, shows the sad face, and then says "Please Wait: Very low battery" even though when it said "ok to connect" and "do not disconnect", the battery icon was about 2/3 full

man.. i was able to reach the "ok to disconnect" after that i restored it and installed the latest firmware. it said that itunes will recognize your ipod after the ipod finish reseting. then the sad face just returned. oh well.. what went wrong??

Its really easy to fix the hardware issues all you need is a pair of steady hands two small flathead screwdrivers and after you manage to pull it apart gently. There is only like 7-9 parts inside these works of electronic genius then you look for the part you think needs replaced. The wonderful thing about the ipods is that parts are cheap, and easily found. I used to fix Lawn mowers and Ipods in high school and really once you open it up just match up serial #'s and your done

When I restore it it says restore complete or whatever and then it says remove from your computer but when I look at my Ipod screen it just says do not disconnect everytime i try it it restores but I never get the symbol of the adaptor to plug in and finish the restore any help ?

this worked on my ipod nano (the first one) except i didnt need the addapter thing. Just hold down the c & menu and then the c & play/pause buttons. connect to your computer and restall. then just sync your songs again and there you go

guys if you have the sad face its most likely a hard drive problem. i recommend trying two things:

1. open ipod and disconnect and reconnect the hard drive.

2. use the "buisness card" method.

you can find this stuff through google, as well as how to open your ipod.

This may be of help to some people with the sad face icon but the method featured here doesn't work.

In some generations of iPod, mainly the 4th, the iPod ribbon cable that connects the mainboard to your hard drive is prone to coming loose in some situations, hence why you may be familiar with the 'bash your iPod on it's corner' method.

The safest way to see if your iPod has this problem is to pry it open (google it), detach the ribbon cable an firmly re-attach it.

Fixed 2 of mine doing this.

read peoples reply's. I think you will find it is working for most people that try it. there are a few reasons why you would see a sad face on your iPod and this method will work for some of them. The video description clearly states that this video WILL NOT fix all sad face iPods. If your iPod can't be forced into disk mode then it has a hardware issue in which case you would require to open up the device.

well, even though this wasn't the solution for my ipod, when putting it into disc mode, DO NOT take your finger off the middle button. hold menu and the middle button until it clears, then as soon as you see the screen clear, switch from the menu button to the play/pause button, keeping the middle button pushed down. disc mode didn't help me though. i had to disconnect the harddrive and reconnect it. if you're willing to risk it, i'll tell you what to do
