All you people keeping saying the book is better. There's more than one book. It's a trilogy. None of the books were DENSE and it wouldn't be hard to combine all three books into one movie. The books are short and written in a unique style that isn't seen much today. This is pretty close to the first book except for that whole amulet of peace crap and the way Ogion names Ged (Sparrowhawk).
@LucentDarkness True, the books are short, but you know what? If someone had tried to make a movie version that really fleshed out what was important to the story, it would have been difficult for the result to NOT be an epic, emotional film. Wizard of Earthsea especially has soooo much going on that isn't strictly speaking part of the plot (Sparrowhawk goes here, does this, goes somewhere else, does something stupid, etc) that, if done right, could be told brilliantly in the visual medium.
Guys, this was a movie that was made for TV! It isn't going to be incredible. The fact that it was as good as it was is surprising. The book was DENSE, even if it wasn't long. They couldn't make it totally accurate to the story. They had to change things to make it fit into a three-segment TV movie.
@YALovers Horrible casting choice? Only the Kargs were supposed to have pale skin and blond hair. Everyone else was supposed to have skin that ranged from copper to red-brown to black, with hair that could be dark, dark red, black, curly or straight.
@dontaccepttherhythm Same, when I first saw the previews I was like WTF is this? I did NOT connect the guy cast for Ged's role for Ged at all. Couldn't really. What happened to the copper colored skin? There really wouldn't be much of a contrast between the Kargs and the Free Peoples of the Archipelagos if they all looked exactly the same. .. And "Sparrowhawk" shouldn't be the name whispered into Ged's ear... that's the nick-name the children in the Gontish village gave him.
this was pathetic. And i am sure the studio ghibli one is really bad too and not very true to the books as well. but i a sure its probably still alot better then this piece of crap.
I'm ok with movies taking dramatic license and not following books exactly, but it really annoys me that they chose to make Ged white. I love the fact that the Earthsea books have so many non-white characters because most fanatsy books are saturated with anglosaxon mythology and white characters.
Ursela K Guin was very angry about being left out of the movie making decisions and the casting. I guess if you're not as rich as JK you really can't stop the movie industry.
i dont think the guys who made this movie know that if they made it alot better and more like the book they would have got more views and more money..(u have to spend money to make money) dont forget that or else ur nowhere and ull struggle
@dontaccepttherhythm At least this "thing" made me buy the books (which I'm reading right now, I've just finished the first), if we want to find a positive thing about it... ^^
This is fucking despicable, idiot producers, terrified of having an "Ethnic" cast, so they make everyone in the world white and leave Danny Glover as a literal magical negro. I'm not even going to do more than mention the sword-fights and fireballs, I mean for christ's sake FIREBALLS!?
Did I just see Pippin or Merry from The Lord of the Rings movie? Could've sworn I did. Well, the plot's kind of typical but I'll watch it anyways for want of another movie to see.
i watched it one morning when i woke up on my sofa for my 2.30am piss...i blazed up the half joint of cheese i had in the ashtray and relaxed into it.....thought it was aiiight....
The only reason why people think that a book is better then a movie is because they are different. When you read a book you imagine things to be the way YOU want them to be. And then you see a movie that is also an imagined book but by someone else and that's why you say that the movie is worse than a book. People are different, we imagine and see things different. Comparing a book and a movie is possible under one codition > they both came from one man (or woman ;-)) brain :-)
okay, one, Ged (sparrowhawk) is meant to be black, two, he is meant to be a 13 when ogion names him, and he names him Ged not Sparrowhawk, 3 sparrowhawk does not have the secret to some door and noone is trying to attack roke. this movie is FUCKING RETARDED, read the book before you make the movie
What's ACTUALLY stupid is when they put in some dude with an american accent in a fantasy movie. That just looks absoloutly stupid. Should be english or irish or something. I can't stand that gutteral accent...
What a useless thing to do. WTF would they make Ged white? Why is his scar so lame looking? This is a classic example of retard writers taking what is near perfect and slaughtering it to make a buck. This pisses me off. I wish it was illegal to do this shit.
A Wizard of Earthsea is one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written. Ignore any and all adaptations of the book and read it instead.
i dont think this book should have ever been filmatised... films just cant show as much depth as books, therefor usually making it all very simplified. its not that the director of the movie is that bad (though some actors are fucking horrible). its just that you cant do the same things with a 2hour long movie. earthsea series is much about there not being any simple solution, and pure power cant solve everything. just like ged had to figure out his shadow creatures name. however (continued)
i though the movie was alright, the anime was better but what i dont get is, how did they make such a great actor like danny glover to be in a film that kinda seemed...well, low budget.
This movie just breaks my heart. It wasn't able to capture the beauty and depth of the book/s. As interrupted102 said, this really is a big insult to the UKL's work.
They reversed the true name, I understand they change some things when adapting a book to film but that of "the true name" is just one of the things they should keep the way it is in the book
Ogion said you are sparrowhawk!? His true name is Ged, sparrowhawk is just his nickname. PLUS why the fuck did they use shaun ashmore of all people to play Ged. What a shit movie...
I didn't like either the books or the movie (but thats just not what I'm in to - extremely well written book though!), but we did it for an English Oral at school and the differences between the movie and the book are astronomical! There is such a difference!
