No matter what you say, cfl's contain mercury vapor. Even the "green" ones. They are very unsafe to produce and equally unsafe when improperly disposed of or during common failures. Many people use cfl lights for much more than a grow room... children and old folks are at most extreme risks. Led lighting does not do any of this.

To everyone knockin' LED's.. these aren't the 1/2w bulbs used in those cheap panels ebay used to sell. Cree LED's themselves are pretty much comparable with hps and mh when it comes to lumens per watt. Cree "whites" are even higher then an hps.. over 100Lm each. There's some amazing grows out there.. all under LED. Hans' are nice, but there are better. Google "IrishBoy led". Here's a vid of one of his grows:

As a former cfl grower for a number of years, from what I've seen you get a greater harvest with leds watt for watt. Hps growers sleep on both cfls and leds. Very nice for stealth grow for 60 watts. I am truly humbled by what I see here.

People need to remember this vid was from 09, and LED technology for growing has come a long long way. Sure HPS and MH lights are proven, but they are bulky, hot, high cost, and risky. Huge chunky buds or popcorn, size doesn't affect potency. Oh and for the dude who said just go to your dealer, and save the money. At 60 a Q, if you are a heavy smoker, a homegrow will pay for itself in one harvest, or else you are buying dimes from some highschool kid.

I have use LED and HPS. The HPS is a way better light for flowering. I have a test running right now between 600watt LED and a 1000watt hps. The LED is not half as big as the HPS flowers at 4 weeks. LED is great for veg only. If I wanted to flower for 20-30 weeks I would grow outside. I have been doing tests for over 2 years trying to get the best. HPS is the way to go!!

wow!. good job!. i was using 5mm leds for a grow light, but i decide to use high power becouse they have high reflection power due by his brightly light!. you can use reflection lens if you want light concetration on certain place, i have tested and i ready get very good results, im building another one but with 10w led very powerfull leds, if you want to try buy one on ebay to good prices, i say this becouse i have some of them, try this led will not desapoint you for sure, THANKS FOR POST IT!!

@northsider707, I recommend setting up a DWC (Deep Water Culture) hydroponic setup ie. Oxy-Pot, with a UFO, nutes, [grow] medium and a fan and be on your way. I have a few plants now, not harvested yet, but by the end of the month should have at least one plant done. The internet is your friend... You can DIY it or eBay it, whichever works out cheaper. The %Pfr of a given section of plant determines how much it will stretch vs inter-cell production. This completely explains shade avoidance and plant shape

No, I haven't grown with LED's, but the amount of mainstream material pin pointing the phytochrome system and its central role in plant shaping and sleep patterns along with watching various led grows over the years (data) suggests strongly that phytochrome is key. I have used other sources of lights including the sun to grow various types of plants and for some reason the leaves always know they're under a shadow.

I'm trying to work with you here. I think this setup is among the best so far.
