  • Lol love you Marty but for the first time I didn't learn what I wanted to. I didn't learn how to right a song, a learned how to learn another song, change the chords, and call it mine!

  • @mrmusicrocks1 Why, did you learn how to wrong a song?

  • still watching in 2012 !!

  • @selfdex Fuck you

  • Those first 3 chords sound like the opening to Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits

  • Ok...So Your teaching us to get any song and forge it into another song...hmmm weird...

  • Hey, if you wanna hear a good made up classic rock song original go to my channel and watch..... Tell us what you think.

  • Those first 3 chords sound like Pachelbel's Canon. infact, many modern songs have the sort of the same pattern as Canon!

/watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM This video explains it all :)

  • thanx it helped a lot :)

  • Haha "not a cute blonde girl that draws a cirlce on a board..." Look at the video suggestions... A blonde girl writing on a board.

  • I guess that's the ES-335. I have the epiphone dot and I am thinging about changing to some better pick ups. I have been looking on the setmor duncan SH4 JB model for bridge and the SH-2N '59 for neck. Are these any good? I am very new to pick up stuff :D

  • dude your awesome!!! im ur biggest fan !!!!!!!!

  • Thanks but I dont really have problems with the chords what I have problems with are the lyrics... Can anyone help me here? Pls! I`m Desperate!

  • @alpunkbrewster Your lyrics stem from melody issues.. What you need is some "Melody friendly lyrics" The best thing to do is steal lyrics here and there from songs you like and rework them to make them your own! Some common lyrics -Woman -City -Come on -Get up -Lets go -Ready -Are you ready There are literally tons and tons of lyrics like this to help you get your creative juices going! Check out my Channel for more info like that!
  • @jimiydoorshamelech so its ok to copy lyrics all you have to do is remake them! Awesome! Thanks!

  • first 3 chords sounds like fall guy theme start

  • This is soooooo wrong, Taylor Swift said + I agree with her, you should be recording you're own music, some thing heart felt that you came up with as an inspiration, don't try to take the easy was around i'm sorry I disagree with you to the end on this one. But God bless. ~Ariel

  • Dude, I really didn't get too much for tips and such from what you did, but overall I play guitar stead as well and guess it might feel obvious sometimes you just flow, I just really dig the video, had to like it just because well , "Your riffing here" and just playing some cool songs, i also play most but yeah I have been using the ipad with my guitar to do some amazing things and going to do a tutorial soon showing that process using smartphones and ipads. Ill link you when done!

  • @DamienBenoit

wanna know how to write a rock melody? check out my channel its practical use for a riff you have

  • @jimiydoorshamelech Thanks for the reply Jimmy! Overall I have been playing, writing and producing music since atleast 1999 and have been playing all instruments since i was a baby. Just from a musical band family. Youtube: leebenoit (my dad and his music) I already know a decent amount about writing songs in every genre because I have done tons of albums and such but Im going to give your video a look cause hey.... Can never stop learning more right? Check my channel for things i do.

  • haha while playing let it be, i heard no woman no cry from the start

  • ahhh chillie pepperssss

  • Chords, Melody, Lyrics. Intro,Verse,Chorus,Verse,Chorus,Bridge,Chorus x2 End.

Bish Bash Bosh, listen to any of my songs and you'll see. Great vid though :D

  • haha about the blackbird thing i actually wrote a song inspired by Snow (Hey Oh) by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers it uses the same chords but it sounds so different. great lesson, thanks Marty!!!

  • marty is great!!!

  • Hey could u do a tutorial on smoke on the water ????

  • i was the 77,777 viewer !! yeaa :)

  • @nugent321 ; I'm the same, I have been playing for years and it's only since I've started watching videos etc. that I've become good.

  • Just to clarify I've been playing for years but I've only progressed since getting the dvds/watching the videos

  • @guitarjamzdotcom hey Marty, have you written any stuff? if so could you upload it so we can have a listen? thanks, you've helped me to be a really well rounded guitarist in only a couple of months with your bad ass dvds. Just need to keep going with the soloing now and I'll be able to play how i've always wanted. Thanks man!

  • what if you have the same riff in a different key? like B to E

  • great video, the blonde gal with the board is talking i believe more from a lyric stand point and for lyricists only and not so much composers. If one writes words they are a lyrcist and if music composer if one does both they are a songwriter. cheers.

  • i like it how marty used to be part of RockOnGoodPeople and now he hates them :D GOOD ON YOU MARTY YOUR BETTER!! :D UR AWESOME. DUMB BLONDE

  • thank you.

  • Marty hates RockOnGoodPeople xD

  • C to G to Am to F is dont stop beliving,im yours, take on me and kids by mgmt but yeah I guess now I know how to play no woman no cry and Let it be now :) lots of songs use the same chords.

  • @MusicStuffSome dont stop believing is E to B to C#minor to A. this is the 4 chord song your thinking of.

  • @casey19971 I must sing it differntly then because it fits well behind it when I play those, but ill try those chords see what they sound like :)

  • Are you teaching me how to write a song or how to play the guitar cmon!

  • marihuana much?

  • your right for a long time i tried writing just from my head but having something as a base helps

  • youre the man bro..thanks

  • everybody has mentioned something about the blonde lady with the white board, so there it was. but Marty, if you could. would you please teach me how to play sex and candy by Marcy Playground. i would love to jam to that. thanks!

  • no its A to G Then D my bad

  • that A to D to G progression sounds more like Spank Thru by nirvana

  • LOL at 2:13 i was like "is it 3 blind mice"?

  • Sir I'd love if you could break down the stairway to heaven solo. Not sure if you did already but if not please do :)

  • That's not really how scar tissue goes. Love ya tho marty

  • Great Idea to teach this. Then you get into chord and rhythm patterns that fit into the meter of more than one song. One old example of this is playing "The House of the Rising Sun" and singing the words to Amazing Grace. They match up perfectly.

    Big Ron

  • WE ALL LOVE U MARTAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!! when i get a grammy im gnna thank you for breakin everything down barney style for us noobs.. keep on rockin marty

  • I notice the same things all the time yes, sad thing is that you are playing scar tissue wrong =P

Another thing, when breaking down the "shapes" in scar tissue and black bird, youll figure they are just 2 notes from regular chords, you just dont have to push the other strings because you're not playing them. It's easier (and more lazy) to grab them like that. Suddenly when you look at it like that you'll find dozens of other "influences" when just looking at those chords.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA RITE WHEN U SAID CUTE BLOND DRAWING CIRCLES ON A BOARD I STRTED CRACKING UP CAUSE I JUST WATCHED THT!!!!

  • Please do a song called girl by the beatles you should also please do more beatles songs you're always the one I watch for knowing how to play beatles songs so please take this into consideration. You're the best teacher for guitar. thanks

  • your vids have helped my guitar playing so much. cheers geezer!

  • yay the springboard came back! :D but it fucked that girl up hardcore! >:D

  • MAY THE SCHWARTZ BE WITH YOU

  • springboard schwartz

  • The easiest way to write a song is to bring out the B.O.D. ... The bong of destiny

  • @ipikaarchive dick?

  • @ipikaarchive HELL YA

  • fuck, i wanna jump in that pool !

  • Marty, in Randy Bachman's autobiography that is exactly how Randy said he writes songs. Take a good song, change the lyrics, then change the chord progression. Through this process you eventually develope your own song with its own sound. Well done.

  • Marty, that's one of the greatest videos you ever posted! I think it's really cool to see that all the great musicians were inspired and influenced by someone else (sometimes without even knowing it) and that you don't have to be a genius or god to write own songs. At the moment it's like 1am in Switzerland, but tomorrow i'll wake up soon and start writing some fucking songs! Thanks for this important lesson!

  • Haha. Love the references.

    Have a nice 4/20?

  • your ghostbuster example also sounds exactly like gloria.

  • that song brings back so meny memories

  • Very cool Marty, thanks for posting it.

  • OMG OMG OMG when u mentioned the girl with the board i totaly knew what video u were talking about

  • i thought this was one of the more interesting postings about songwriting. a different perspective than all the others.

  • I've found those chords, G Am C and Em in like 10 songs from the rolling stones to andres calamaro. O_o

  • Really good lesson Marty!

  • Thank you for sharing this, Marty :) much appreciated!

  • Marty, First off, Thanks a ton for all the good lessons.....Thanks for sharing your talents and time.

Secondly, cool hat, where'd you get it? It would be so apropos if you did a lesson of 'Taxi' with that lid on. And if you had that hot chick singing backup for you (in full view of your students, of course, that would be sa-weet.

"It was rainin' hard in Frisco........"........

  • that blond girl is a golden joke! i can't believe how the world is so full of donkeys!

  • wat chord 1 30 - 1-35

  • hey Marty i was wondering if you could do cliffs of dovers for one of your lessons that would be awesome

  • yeah like the 1 4 5, you can write a different chorus for a song every time you pick up a guitar with that one

  • hahaha i have a feeling your talking about expert village with the blonde girll....

  • lol theres a blonde girl to the side racism

  • lmao i know who your talking about !!!!!!!!!

  • fisrt of all, you do great tutorials. second, i really want to learn to play Miss You by Rolling Stones. Do you think you could make one?

  • Marty you should teach dust in the wind thanks

  • lol its funny when you mention a blonde girl writing on a board cuz after you mention that i look to the videos on the side and OMFG THERES A BLONDE GIRL WITH A BOARD!!!!

  • haha i saw that too :D

  • @JDM4U omg yeah by rockongoodpeople

  • @JDM4U HAHAHA LOL

  • @JDM4U i think thats y he said it but its still funny

  • @JDM4U That's crazy.

  • so true I wrote a song the other day and then out of nowhere i started singing "Raindrops keep falling on my head" and i was like F@ck is the same chord progression!

  • Learned a lot from that. Thanks Marty! Inspiration is definitely they key. I just hate when I play something that sounds good but forget it latter :(

  • Marty you are absolutely the best. The only teacher I've ever had.

  • lol springboard

  • I think Marty is great, but he absolutely, postively plays "Scar Tissue" wrong. Frusciante is a god! Actually, the Scar Tissue riff goes from F to Dmi. There's no Emi thing in the middle... Also the rhythm is sketchy in Marty's version. Not to be a dickhead, cuz I do think Marty is great!

  • @5buddhafam dont think it was a Scar tissue lesson tho he was just trying to prove a point. how certain songs can sound similar and what not

  • i just listened to this all night, broke it down and exploded. You are the best. Rock on dude. Oh, and anyone that has a problem with how marty rolls... watch more videos.

  • i just listened to this all night, broke it down and exploded. You are the best. Rock on dude.

  • he sounds like jack black at the beginning lmao

  • 4:32 whoa what did i just do? i am one cool mother

  • Marty:

I dont want to sound like a stupid teenie but the BEST example for todays BIGGEST HITS are "California Gurls" and "TGIF" (Katy Perry and The Secret Handshake)

those have the same chords AND rythm.its ridiculous...

  • He plays Blackbird wronG!

  • @Skrotnisse275 also plays scar tissue wrong

  • "cute blond girl that draws a circle on a board and this barinstorm things about happy and flowers and perfume and stuff like that, were gonna talk about MUSIC WRITING"

Thanks Marty THATS WHAT IM TALKIN ABOUT! :)

  • @LulitoXFoundationSB on the side of this vid theres a vid with this description rockongoodpeople

  • @pcruz112295 ahah yeah i saw that one first thats why i laugh about it so much xD

  • @LulitoXFoundationSB Hahahaha!! Amen to THAT!!

  • Good lesson Marty...way better than all the other lessons which are more about writing lyrics, and not necessarily chord progressions that could be used.

  • In most popular music, there are less than 20 chord progression, so to say it is illegal and unethical is just wrong.

Marty a good lesson, if you have a degree why not tell people the chord.

to learn music you need to learn the major scale, I think the song tears in heaven has most of the chord it contain no minor 7 b5 chord but it has an inversion of that chord cause that chord is not used much in pop.

Just learning try to learn the sound of a major and a minor chord

  • Cool teacher, with a great sense of humor. Thanks Marty. :)

  • XD around 1:53 i love how you say "blaaaaack bird" lol naa but for real this was very helpfull
