i just purchased a 12x20, & set it up for the 1st time. could you tell me more about the stove please. i thought the tent fabric would be thicker, im worried it will not hold heat well. im taking it to colorado and do not want to freeze, a friend told me to put insulating board around the inside to hold heat in. what do you think? great video by the way!
@clinchmtoutfitter Not too much to worry about as far as holding heat. It would work better with some foam board insulation though. That's a great idea but might be hard to manage. The 4dog tent stove I use is awesome. It gets pretty warm in the tent I would recommend loading the stove with a hard wood for overnight, and even then you'll probably have to get up once or twice to put on more wood. You can use the top surface for pots and pans to cook with.
The stove gets pretty hot, I recommend the optional damper to control the burn, especially overnight. Not sure how it will handle in Colorado during winter. It's get's much colder there. I'm hoping to try it in Nebraska for a pheasant hunting trip. That will be a good test. Well, good luck with your new tent and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
@tflorestx i live in nebraska dont recomend phesant hunting here at least around the sherman county area because we dont have many phesants at all i recomend south dakota or iowa i beleive they have more unless your going for farm raised phesants
is this 12x20 tent assembled in sections? can it be reduced into a 12x12 or do these just come in specific sizes? Also at night time, if you have lanterns lit inside the tent (or any light source lit) can you see the silhouettes of the people moving inside the tent? looks like a great tent..
@b4dan92 It is an AWESOME tent! There are no sections. It is a one piece tent so you buy the size you need. The material is rip stop nylon and it's pretty thin so yes, if you have a light inside you'll see the silhouettes from outside. great questions.
Looks like it would be useful but also looks like one good storm and it would be shredded. Since it has been about 8 months since you posted this video, how is the tent performing? Have you camped in it much?
@yesiamanalien I have used it quite a bit in some harsh environments. I can tell you that it holds up to the constant 15-20 mph winds and the rain on north padre island in the gulf of mexico. It's easy to put up and it's very comfortable. Especially with the vestibule. I have slept 6 adults quite comfortably in it. hope that helps.
I backcountry pack with mules...how big is this tent when folded up in it carry case? Check out riley stoves..been used by outfitters on pack trips for years made in montana..got the muleskinner even has boot dryer on them...
@Dojocho The fabric fits into a 4' bag that weighs about 50lbs. one person can carry it for a bit. The poles weigh a bit more and are in a 5' bag. The fabric in the bag is very flexible and could fit a number of ways on a pack mule. the poles are not flexible, but it's a pack mule...
@Dojocho This type of material is especially prone to condensation if the temperature is at or below the dew point as I mentioned in the video. When camping in cool humid environments, it's VITAL to have a tent stove to keep the tent dry. When we go to North Padre in the early spring, the inside of the tent is wet by the time we get it set up (at night), and we get the stove going and it dries out pretty quickly. I'm running out of space so I tell you about the 4 dog in another comment.
@Dojocho I love the 4 dog tent stove. It can hold a lot of wood and puts out a lot of heat and no embers. I bought the damper add-on for it and it works wonderfully to control the fire. The water heater option comes with crappy seals and they leak, so put a bucket under the faucet or replace the seals. You'll need to build your own stove pipe or find one online since the 4 dog has a 4" pipe and the Alaknak II has a 6 inch stove jack. over-all, excellent stove.
I've had a setback in my video posting. My friend borrowed my camera and recorded over some of my video. I'm in the process of editing what I can salvage and we'll see what we can get. Hopefully I can get something posted :(
@tflorestx Still would like to see the other Vids. Im trying to talk my wife into letting me get this tent. We have 4 kid and Im sick of buying the cheap smaller tents. Plus I would like to use the tent for hunting trips. I am also looking to get the 4dog stove, without the water tank. If you could put up the parts on the smoke stack that would be great tks!!
@TheBworleyiii I had some technical difficulties with the other videos and I'm going to have to shoot them again. I'll try to do it this fall when I can review the stove while it's in the tent and burning. it's just too damn hot right now. I can tell you it's a nice stove and it get pretty warm.
@TheBworleyiii As for chimney parts... I used the damper and first section of the stove pipe I got from the stove manufacturer. I added a couple of 5" to 6" converters and two sections of 6" air duct. (one for the top) and connected a rain cap from cabelas.
I have new videos!!!!!! I just shot more footage of the tent, the vestibule and the 4 dog tent stove. I will edit them ASAP and get them posted. Sorry it's taken so long. Look for them by next week.
That was a good video. Clear and well thought out. It showed virtually all the features and gave a good walk around. I have never seen one of those set up at Cabelas' most likely due to space considerations so until this video, I really didn't have a clear mental picture of what the tent was like. Thanks. I hope your tent lasts many years and serves you well.
@burbotooster I just use a standard battery powered lantern with a CF bulb. It works well for me. The only thing I need battery power for is my amateur radio gear. For that, I have a sealed lead acid battery that I connect to a solar panel. It isn't as pretty as yours, but it will power my radio (transmitting) at 100 watts for days without being charged, and when it's hooked up to the solar panel, it just won't die! It's also cheaper, but I won't lie, it's pretty damn heavy! ;)
Oh, the one thing I noticed is that the tent poles corrode quite easily in the salt water, but as long as we only do this trip once a year, this tent should last quite a while. The trips to the lake and other state and national parks will be NOTHING for this tent. It was a fantastic purchase!
Sorry I haven't posted new videos of the vestibule and the tent stove. I'll try to do that soon. I just got back from North Padre Island and the tent performed beautifully. I was impressed with how it dealt with constant 15mph winds and gusts up to 30mph. We never set up the stove, but used a propane heat source instead, and it kept the tent toasty warm and dry at night. The vestibule gave us an area to get the sand off our feet and keep the sand from blowing into the tent. more later...
I just bought the 12x12 waiting for the snow to melt to put it up i ended up getting the vestibule, floor liner, cylinder hunter package stove, roof protector, bunk cots it was like christmas for me at CABELAS cant wait to use them ill make a video
@burbotooster I'm sure you'll like it! I got the vestibule and a 4 dog stove. I haven't had a chance to make a video for them yet, but I'm hoping to get that done in the next week or two.
@burbotooster : What I found once I tried to install the stove in the tent is that the stove pipe was too small for the stove jack. My stove came with a telescoping chimney. it went from 5" diameter at the base to 4" at the top. the hole is 6" in the tent. I had to go to home depot and buy 6" duct and a 5"-6" adapter for the base and another for the top to attach the rain cap. I haven't tried to install it yet, but I'll let you know how it works soon.
@paddyboy12432 : I got the 4 dog tent stove from the wall tent shop. It was supposed to have arrived by now, but I'll give it another couple of days before I call the dealer. I'll review it when I get it. I chose it because of the heat capacity and safety features. I like the fact it has a baffle which creates a hotter cooking spot on the top and keeps embers from making their way out the top of the stove pipe; less chance to burn your tent! :)
Thanks for a great review. Was wondering if you think this tent is big enough for 5 kids and 2 parents? With room for maybe a small table and the stove.
Yes, it's plenty big for that. 7 adults would be crowded, but could be done. 5 kids and 2 adults would be quite comfortable. If in doubt, they make a bigger version. 13x27 I think. Either way, the Alaknak is the way to go if you've got kids. It's easy to set up so you and the wifey can have camp up in no time.
Hey guy, Been looking to maybe buy one of these tents... saw your review at cabelas.com .. Just wanted to say thanks for the video!!! ..... Really gives a full view of it....
thats cool make a video on the stove your getting. How good dose it fit back in the bag after take down is it like most tents you have to fight it to get it back in the bag it came in?
I just got the vestibule for it today and I should have the stove next week. I'll put it all together and do another video. I should have talked about how it set up and tore down. Maybe I'll remember in the next video. It fits back in the bag VERY easily with plenty of room to spare. You don't have to pay too much attention to how you fold it either. I had so much room left that I was able to put the tent pole bag inside as well. Very nice!
I forgot to mention that this tent took 30 minutes to set up, only because we spent some time chatting and it was the first time we set it up. The next time it should only take 10-15 minutes, as it goes up quite easily and simply.
Cool Video man, Thanks for the tour.
