you have the original self titled debut?!!!you are very fortanite to have that obscure opus in your possession...which pressing do you have?...by that i mean country...
Uk original - cover only vg but vinyl lovely, sat next to my Churchills lp maybe my second fave worldwide psych lp, a benefit of being a rare record dealer !
Pete Cook - 1968 July album songwriter, musician, guitar maker to world renownd rock bands, and Tom Newman Chris Jackson and Alan James have reformed the Tomcats(July) early this year 2009 and produced a vindaloo shit hot rock album prospectively to release by the end of this year. These guys still have even more rock music blood flowing through their veins. These guys come from a legendary rock era and still have it. I know coz Pete was round for dinner the other day. Rock on lads!!
I just threw Sloop John on the turntable and I hear the similarities. Certainly, PET SOUNDS would have rocked their world almost two years before this track was recorded. And continuing with the boating motif.
When I heard it, I always thought of this Daniel Johnston song off of HI! How Are You? -- the same exact riff -- or a bass line from The Ronettes.
I was trying to think of the girl group song the bass line reminded me of, all i could think of was the scene in Goodfellas where they go into the Copacabana club.Cheers.
My fave uk psych lp - have an original which will die with me!

Still in touch with the drummer Chris.
Yes its the same Tom.
They also had a hook up with Patrick Campbell Lyons. Later of Nirvan (UK)

"Mary is a very fine boat, she's the finest boat to float." Super Duper indeed.... Their whole album is fantastic!

Pleasant ditty: shades of Sgt P!?
Same Tom Newman who produced "Tubular Bells", I think?
Later a superb album "Bayou Moon" on Coda Records in 1985. Can't help any further.
