you need to understand that when it's mission critical, you need low tier programming language not high. Java RTS is basically has adjusted JVM so it can work on a specific project... Who gives shit if java cost something ? No one. Since Oracle bought Sun, they gone super jew with these piece of shit things. Java is not for Mission Critical systems, you don't control a jet with it when microseconds matter.

The RTOS in the native controls that the 340 runs on, S4C Plus and IRC5 is Wind River's VxWorks.

Also, I'd feel better with a control system based on the manipulator's true kinematic design rather than a code jockey's guess.

Ref aewallin: Real-time has earlier required unsafe languages (source does not tell what program does if wrong; uncontrolled crashes instead of controlled exception in case of programming errors) like C/C++, and a special RTOS to reach sub-milli-second timing guarantees. This demo was to show that real-time Java on standard hardware and with heap allocations every ms actually provides real-time performance! Google for "real-time GC Sun Lund" to read more..

@cyborgtroy perhaps because lots of people know Java and don't want to learn an ultra-specific weird low level language that are sometime the only option on some ships ? (ex: CCBasic on the CONRAD micro-controllers is a pure shit..)
