  • how could there be dislikes to this video? this guy is awesome...

  • @nrgymover2000 3 people empathize with electrons...they just have to be negative. :)

  • The energy levels for Cl on my periodic table are -1, 1, 3, 5, 7.

    What gives?

  • @Maafa1619 Those aren't electron configurations. Those are the possible charges that chlorine can form by gaining or sharing electrons, called "oxidation numbers".

  • @MarkRosengarten Merci beaucoup, monsieur.

  • @Maafa1619 Mon plaisir. :)

  • a great voice like that and entuziazm makes it a lot fun to giv ur attention i wish my teach was lik that

  • Hey thanks alot. This definetly helped.

  • thats genious!!

  • His voice makes it so interesting...:o

  • 9:26 - 9:31 haha yes, you sir are a scholar.

  • i thought p can only hold 3? like: px, py, and pz.....

  • thanks alot...love this video,,,,,ever thought about coming to trinidad to teach chem,,,,chem teachers here really sucks!!!!!!!!!!!lol

  • takin chem as junior in high....yay

  • @jjkillr Me too. Chem Hon is kinda hard :/ But these videos help me more than my teacher does. 0__o

  • @tripleguy031 oh and hundi's rule + pauli exclusion.. :L

  • ... aufbau principle? :L

  • Thank god for this video. Taking Chem 1 in college. Listened to lecture, took notes, read book like 3 times and it wouldn't click. 3 Minutes in. Bam. It all makes sense.

  • hey thanks for the video, but i was wondering are there certain rules to follow when dealing with ions?

  • lol. He sounds like Norman the robot, Doofensmurff's assistant, from Phineas and Ferb.

  • why does he sound like the "ask a ninja" guy?

  • My witch of a chem teacher gave us a quiz on the four differerent ways to configure electrons, and I got a 34 - _- I didnt understand how to do it, and shes giving our class another quiz on it tomorrow and this vid really helped me! :)

  • OMG you just saved me from getting a low mark thank you

  • you sound like the man talking in teaser trailer for new movies..it so epic lol

  • my teacher didn't teach us this at all and wanted us to complete an entire chem packet on it. thank youuu soo much for saving my life

  • easy stuff :) got it down

  • Excellent video! I'm not taking any chem classes but ive been very very intrigued with quantum physics, so this has led me to want to learn chemistry - all personal interest. I just started teaching myself biology as well, but when organelles in a cell are doing their things, it will help me to understand whats going on mechanically with chem background, so this tutorial helps me out. Thank you! With all the knowledge online, you don't even have to go to school to learn it! Beautiful :)

  • thank you so much that helped a lot...you said the 3d comes before the 4s but i think the 3d after the 4s

  • This video was soooooo helpful!

    Thnx alooooooooooooooot!

You teach better than my professor!

  • Thank you sir! You helped me sooo much

  • awesome ..100 times better that my teacher.....:)

  • This was a great help as a refresher! I'm a junior in high school, taking AP Chemistry. this is a great instructional video, thank you so much!

  • She sounds so boring and like she is having a hard time breathing so it makes lectures suicidal...

  • If my Chemistry instructor sounded like this, I would have an A in that class :(

  • Thank You Sir! your tutorial is super helpful!

  • Your the only person that can teach chem correctly on youtube..all the others..im like what is this..-___-...keep on teaching! :D

  • Comment removed

  • One fix, 4s has less energy than 3d so we would write 4s first

  • @Jakers707 Yes, you can. It's not mandatory.

  • @MarkRosengarten Oh wow its not mandatory? I thought it was....so i can just put 3s^2,3p^6,3d^10..etc? not...the other way? Because i find it confusing to put 4s..etc..etc

  • Very helpful, thanks.

  • I just wanna say thanks for explaining this, its helped me so much lol... my teacher was explaining it in hotel rooms.. :!!!(

  • TODAY, WE MARVEL AT THE AMAZING THING CALLED THE ELECTRON.

  • Thanks so much. I loved your practical analogies and your enthusiastic approach. I spent an hour online trying to figure it out and still didn't get it. You did it in 10 minutes. Boo YA!

  • I passed a test because of this video. I almost had it, but not quite. After watching this I had a Eureka moment. Thank you sir.

  • Thanks man...my Chem teacher is a dumb ass and doesn't teach so this helped a lot

  • Thank you my teacher didnt really explain how he went from the electron configuration to the arrows and orbitals. I now know that you fill up every box then you do the down arrow! Thank you very much and you helped me understand now!

  • I mean like. God bless you and Chemistry. I was suppoust to take chemistry last year but the school was about to become an F graded because of the science FCAT(Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) and the principal ordered everyone to stop what they were doing and start practicing for the test. Now I'm taking AP Bio and Anatomy, and I require a base of the entire Chemistry subject and now I'm completely lost.

Thank you for all your videos, I will learn from all of them

  • You just saved my life on my chem test. Your my hero

  • Hey,

Can i just say your a life saver i just moved country and i had to do an entrance test and this is in it i havent learned so i watched this i have learned how to do it but i want to know is that " you say that PEL 2,8,18,32 but for calcium its 2-8-8-2 but in the test they just have 20 so how do i know to skip 10 electrons for the third PEL and instead just have 8

  • @XxXtremeZxX By "they just have 20" i mean for they only tell me the atomic number

  • I LOVE YOU. you are saving my life right now....

  • Thank you very much! I'm taking ap bio after ap physics, so i didn't remember a lot of chem stuff and this helped a lot! (y)

  • So, for the shell that has 18 electrons you would always use D after S ?

  • thank you so much, you are a great teacher, you saved me from failing my chemistry quiz

  • This helped me alot, better than my teacher. You should teach my class.

  • @Catarinaxo4 I find that even though I present it just like this in class, while watching it online you don't have all of the other distractions that go on in a class that take your attention away from the subject at hand and my students take a lot more time than just the duration of this video to "get it". It makes for a great supplementary lesson, though. Glad it helped!

  • Wow! I learned in 10 minutes what my teacher couldn't explain to us in 2 sessions of 50 minutes each...

  • A DOUBT... A 4S orbital has LESS energy than a 3D orbital..so it should be written before 3d during writing configuration right?

  • Amazingly helpful! Thank you so much! Quick and straight-forward but easy to understand!

  • like it, thanks for the tutoring, learned a lots here!

  • Great video, it really helped a lot but what do you mean that there's something going on deeper than energy levels at 1:30 ?

  • Thank you, this really helped me understand the electron configuration

  • what was great but about the simple electronic configuration

    2,8,18,18,32,32,8

u ssaid tha we can go to the another shell before the previous one is filled?? so wt is the rule ?????

  • V^+2 whats the electron configuration of that? please help in despersate need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • do you have this presentation to print out ?

  • sublevels lessons were great thanks ;D please keep teaching ;D

  • Little things like this video are the ones that help & encourage me not to give up on studying chem. Thanks!

  • AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EXPLANATION ThANKYOUUUUU >:)

  • how do you know the electron configuration ? I mean, in your project its already given under the atomic number but it's not given in the perodic table...any help please ?

If my question is not clear, you can see this picture : img696.imageshack.us/img696/3931/capturejru.png

  • why when you were doing Calcium configuration you skipped the sublevel of 3d and went to 4s?

  • @pranks2all 4S IS FILLED EARLIER BEING ON LESS ENERGY

  • I would just like to say thank you for this video. My teacher sounds like "Borat" when he talks and I have a hard time understanding in class. This video along with the powerpoints I already have, make everything "gel". I really appreciate it.

  • man thanks alot you saved me! my teacher explained this in class two weeks ago but I never got the hang of it but now seeing you explaining it in SIMPLE way ( a thing my teacher didn't do)Ive finally understood it

  • you the man tutor dude.. you made me understand this shit...my teacher sacks....

  • @dollarbill11 dude same here...after two weeks ive finally come to terms with this

  • Wow. My prof is bad. Thanks, took the length of your video to understand it.

  • wow! I didn't think i would get this at all. I got it in less than 10 minutes thanks to you!

  • See this helps a lot, considering my teacher never actually teaches since my class is all out of control, since most of them know this already since they are all the smart egotistical type.So I never learn and then finals come along and I'm fucked, especially this year since I missed the two days she actually taught this, and I was out with pneumonia,so I asked for help, she didn't explain anything and gave me a shit load of papers I had no idea what to do with.Finals are here for me and I'm fucked.

  • IIII SOLLUUUUTEEEEE YOUUUUUUU THANKSS THANKSS THANKSS SOO MUCHHH YOU'RR JUSTT EPICLLYYY EPICCCCCCC<3

    greetings from qatar :)

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH

    !!!

  • why why why is not my chemistry teacher as good as you?

    thanks so much

    !!!!

  • i am learning this in my chem class.. however, in order to lets say give the electron configuration for oxygen, would you need the chart to identify what goes in what sub levels? such as s,p,d,f?

  • @DianaJimenezMUA Nope! You can use the diagonal rule. Do a web search for "diagonal rule diagram" to see how it works!

  • kickass. just, kickass. will you replace my chemistry teacher?

  • My teacher doesn't really explain the basics and just jumps around. Thank you for clarifying the basics of electron configuration. Your a great teacher.

  • Hi Mark, you big show-off ! :)

  • You're a great instructor! Thanks for your clear explanation. Keep up the great work.

  • We're doing this in Chemistry class at the moment, You helped so much, thank you

  • I love this guy

  • Analogies = Pwng

  • very well done! I really appreciate how you can be happy while teaching this. I was out of school the day my AP Chem teacher taught this and I just couldn't pick it up from my book. Unfortunately, I didn't remember how electron configurations worked from my previous chemistry experience either. You really made a difference for me and I appreciate that you took the time to teach this! Thank you!

  • this is amazing ! Thanks for the help :D

  • now i wanna smack a textbook for such shameless wasting of my time. Thanx a lot Mark, this is great video!

  • ur the best :) thank you so much. God bless you.

  • thank you so much man, you dont know how much you've teached me. my teacher has been teaching that for like a month now and i still dont get it and in 10 mins i got it. thanks again. Take Care.

  • That's very helpful, thank you.

  • my teacher is so crap he is from east London and has a huge gold watch, and when he explains something he says 'do u understand' each time and then smiles at you as if u understand and then i just smile back but dont know what is going on.

  • what is the difference between electron configuration and electronic configuration?

  • AWESOME WORK MAN!

Seriously, my teacher is the geekiest of the geeks, but he can not teach at all. You're very good at explaining things and using good analogies :)

    Thanks SO much!

  • Can you please explain to me why Cr24 has only one electron it it's 4S orbital? Does something specific happen as soon as you hit the 4D orbitals :S cause i think i missed something in class and now I'm very confused, please help. Thanks :)

My best guess was that Cr24 has this configuration... 4s1, 4p1, 4d4. But then i get confused as to what orbital will be filled first and which last :S

  • you are better then my teacher, but what about valence electrons

  • thank you so much! you've help me a lot. i've passed my test because of this.

  • thank you! thank you! thank you!!! you saved my life! =)

  • I cannot thank you enough!

  • hmm.. you wrote 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 3d 4s 4p, but when I look at my textbook, it says that it should be written as 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p instead, am I misunderstanding something here? =/

  • OMG, I learned more from him than my new teacher since last week! All my teachers says is "they have two spins"... -I look at him wondering what the hell he meant in silence while he looks at me with the "what are you looking at" face- ... >> Whole class was like that too.

  • I have learned so much here. Am I meant to be learning this at GCSE level? Now I know so much more about this than anyone in my class :D Taught so so so so incredibly well and that's coming from an english girl who is a little bit proud of her english origins and consequently, quite opinionated.

Wow I should seriously reconsider my basic and very udgemental/stereoptypical principles that these people are all stupid and fat - i blame the crappy movies for portraying you guys this way. CHEERS!!!

  • @burtv1610 Yeah...I had a bit of a jelly bean problem when I was younger. Plus, my whole family has weight issues, going back generations. Believe it or not, I was a string bean in high school! But one thing I like to think I'm NOT is stupid. :) Glad to be of assistance!

  • U just saved my life!!! Lol thankyou

  • shouldnt F be 2-2-5? since its 1s2 2s2 2p5?

  • @kik0chan Nope...2 = 1s2. 7 = 2s2 2p5. The basic configuration gives you information about PRINCIPAL ENERGY LEVELS, where the expanded configuration breaks them down into SUBLEVELS.

  • Dude... you just saved my chemistry grade. Without you, I'd be dying in honors chem right now T_T

  • wow, i didn't know shit about this topic and now i completely understand it! THANKYOU SOOOO MUCH!

  • wow. thank you so much ! :) now , im ready for my report ! ;) GOD BLESS YOU SIR ! :D

  • Keep doing what you doing you are saving my life

  • @KEONmckay5 yeah!

  • I don't understand why Iodine is 2-8-18-18-7. Why is not just 2-8-18-25 if the 4th energy level can hold 32????

  • @EpicOwnage1212 Shells don't have to fill up before the next one starts. Watch my video called "I Heart Electron Config" to see the diagonal rule.

  • our chemistry teacher asks us to, in a way, summarize the configuration. How do I do it?

  • You helped alot man, thank you thank you thank you

  • u just helped me out like crazy! thanks man!

  • Great Job can you replace my professor you've explained this better than my college instructor/professor did.

  • Thanks. That finally made sense to me and I have a test tomorrow. You look like the cop from supertroopers that wanted a liter of cola. Chickenfucker! :)

  • thank you so much i will probably be the only one who gets this in my class now

im going to fell much smarter

  • I have had such a mental block with Chemistry and I'm 44yrs old. I want to become an RN and was beginning to feel as though it would never happen, there is gonna be that certain someone out there who all of a sudden will put it to you in terms that you can suddenly grasp...don't give up just keep on keeping on.

  • my teacher will not provide the amount of electrons in each orbital either

  • thanks, that actually makes complete sense! i like how you explained it thoroughly with diverse examples too.

    continue the good work

  • Thank you so much! Now I won't have to continue failing chemistry..You explain things so much better than my teacher.

  • maaan !! i am an 9nth grade student these stuf are so compicated i didnt understand anything

  • thank you very much! i appreciate it a lot! thank you!

  • Thank you very much sir!!

  • i think i love you...

  • What's an electron?

  • I LOVE this lecture perfectly understand everything.

  • Comment removed

  • I honestly wish you were my prof !!!!! Excellent

  • Your videos are the most helpful out of all the other chem videos, seriously. Thankyouu!

  • great tutorial

  • well done

  • 60 passes, 1 fail

  • i love you, mark. you are good. please teach more chemistry.

  • This is not the best explaination I have come across. This professor is really easy to understand for me, although, my professor will not let our class have the amount of electrons in each orbital on our periodic table (For example: for Sulfur 2-8-6). The explaination of the periodic table with the shells(period number) and subshells(sections) is easier when you do not have this video's periodic table.

  • @AFourMteenA I teach this with the New York State standards and Reference Tables in mind. There is the diagonal rule that takes care of everything...but when you are dealing with transition metals, the rules don't necessarily apply.

  • @AFourMteenA Makes sense.

  • Please replace my current teacher.

  • thank you soo much u are awsome

  • tnx so much...now i know

  • Never seen someone so excited over something liek this

  • @tombofrog If you're gonna teach it, you should be enthusiastic about it! :)

  • @MarkRosengarten Of course. My chemistry teacher isn't as animated

  • I SO needed this video. Thanks a million.

  • Great video!! Thank you very much

  • What is the maximum number of electrons in the 5th level? In your example, "I" has 7

  • @pyocote 2-8-18-32-32-18-8 lists the maximum number of electrons in each shell.

  • omg 4:21 explained so much to me i didnt know! thanks!

  • thanks. helped alot :)

  • Thanks alot!!!! You are a wonderful teacher!

  • thank youuuuuuu

  • thank you very much. its been years that i have only had a sloppy understanding of this principal. this video was very clear and concise.

  • this is very helpful im a fith year secondary student and were just starting this, thanks

  • greatttttttttttttttttt prof... thanks thank thanks.. more hands to your elbow..

  • thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou. I finally understand this! My chem teacher is a slut who sux at teaching. thankyou so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very good tutor session....I can finish my HW now......THANK YOU!!!!

  • thanks alot ..clear and simple..

  • great

  • Thanks this is a good lesson

  • thx a lot!!!!!

  • The way my teacher showed us this is completely incomprehensible but I totally understand it when you present it. Thanks!!!!

  • wew.thank you very much

  • Thanks to your videos......my average in Chem is 97.9%. You rock!

  • Thanks so much. I can't understand my german teacher AT ALL.

  • oh my god thank you so much.

  • thank you so much!!!!!

    i actually get it now!

  • omg thank you so much i get it now =]

  • i love you! you've helped me sooo soo much!

  • you didnt mention that the sublevel doesn't go in the same order.

    1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p 5s 4d 5p 6s 4f
