it is easy to forget that people like doris day and her family are just like you and me. i guess the only thing that differs is that people we have never met will not mourn us. who wants to be a movie star?
Like many people, I sometimes jump to conclusions. When I heard of Terry Melcher, I figured he was just a young man that was making the most of his mother's fame. Was I wrong! This duet with his mother if nothing short of fantastic. What a talented singer.
What a great song! Terry had a son so thankfully Doris has her grandson since Terry's passing. I understand they are close as welI. I have seen a picture of the three of them.Doris & Terry obviously had wonderful relationship. I just heard Doris talking on a radio show for her 2011 birthday (88) and she sounds amazing! Her voice sounds like she is in her 30's and she has such a quick wit and memorable laugh. Bless them both:)
Greetings to Miss Doris Day.You have become my idol in singing since i was small and tried to imitate your singing voice and styles in a way and i try to sound a little bit you you when i sing even just a little bit.Jist wondering, did you have any grandchildren from your son Terry.Thank you

This song is one of my favourites...brilliantlly produced and sensitively vocalised by Terry and made even more emotional with Doris doing some understated harmony. A Poignant and beautiful version of this song.
Can't seem to listen to this without getting tears in my eyes. It's so wistful and sad. After reading "Doris Day: The Untold Story of the Girl Next Door" by David Kaufman, these lyrics seem even more poignant. It seems Terry was not as close to his mother as he wanted to be and had a somewhat difficult life of his own. I love Doris, though, and recommend the book.
I recommend the Doris Day Her own story by A E Hotchner. You can get it very cheap from libraries by the Internet selers (Ebay) - it's possible for 1USD.
Very touching to hear mother and son sing together. I was just thinking of covering this Jackson Browne song and tweaking it in another way, but it's interesting to hear what they did with it. I think of Terry Melcher as a 60s and 70s record producer--am just reading a book "Hotel California" which promises to tell more about that era.
Nice to find this song on you tube. Terry's records are hard to find. We mourn his passing.
I knew Terry in the mid-1960's at Columbia Studios when he produced a record I made there. Terry did the mixing and you can find the final product (two sided 45 rpm) here on YouTube under The Flameouts. The history of our little rock band from the USAF Academy is there under 'more info'.
I worked for Terry as a part time studio musician for a while. Candace Bergen would drop by. Fine folks to me.
I knew Terry and he was such a nice man . i know he loved Doris Very much , and he was her rock , she is singing background on this song. What a pair ! he was so handsome and she is so beautiful. Miss you Terry !!
omg most actress back then i no she's still alive but most had shitty lives really bad but she took it and still smiled i love her its so sad her son had to die you should never have to see your child die! never! but she has her grandson or low is not her son! ow grrrr i ramble on anyways i was watching her biog marty was a ass lets face it she didnt have much luck in love huh? but she is so lovely x and terry was on the biog and was like lovely and proud of her so lovely and yet sad xoxo
Many people dont know that when Terry produced Paul Revere and the Raiders, he did the background harmonies, often w/ Mark Lindsay, sometimes just him. I wish he'd written a book about all his experiences. As evidenced here, he didnt have a 'star' type voice, but could hit all the notes just fine.
Peter, you have talent. This video was heartbreaking because we know how it ended. I guess you'd say the presentation is haunting. The "dad" in a few photos is Marty Melcher. He is not Terry Melcher's biological father, and I'm not even sure there was a legal adoption, although when Doris married Melcher, Terry took his name. He was a real scoundrel. Terry's real father, musician Al Jorden, committed suicide.
Wow, I never knew this existed and it's fabulous. Touching, sweet, lovely. I didn't know Terry sang; I thought of him as more of a producer than anything. And yes, SO sad that Terry predeceased his mother. I believe she is still well and living in Carmel. But Terry did a lot for her, both personally and business-wise; he took care of her. I'm sure she misses him desperately.
It makes me so sad... Terry is dead and Doris is alone ... beautiful song, I have it by Cher but Terry's version is great! I wish he and his mother had worked more together. I am very touched by the song and the video!
What a rare gem to hear Doris doing backing vocals - and so touchingly, yet unobtrusively. How incredibly moving - it seems so prophetic now, doesn't it? Thankyou so much for posting.
Actually Terry didn't die terribly young... he died when he was in his 60's... well I'm 14 and to me that's kinda old... but still... anyway I love Doris Day... no one can act, sing, get mad, or look as beautiful like her... it just can't be done...
I never knew Terry sang, and it shouldn't be surprising. Aside from his mother's artistry, his real father, Al Jorden, was a musician. This rendition is haunting, even more so Terry died so young. Thanks for posting it.
yes, and he and bruce johnston were "bruce and terry", i believe. he was more into producing other groups. and he was a wonderful son to his great mom, who is singing with him here.
Wow, I really love this song. And, Terry had a good voice, he just needed to develope it. He had the feeling and the right attitude and I like his taste in music. Is that Doris Day singing the duet part with him? If the rest of the album is like this, I'd like to have the CD. The strings were beautiful.
Terry should be very proud of his mother. He was in show business too. He started as a singer and song writer, then he worked as a producer with many groups as Beach boys, Byrds .. After Marty Melcher's death he worked with Doris. He wrote a song Move over, darling for the movie with the same title. Doris should be proud of his son, too.
Wot a sensationally beautiful video!! LOVE IT Peter!!
