  • Everything sounds scarier in German,

  • best thing since the man invented the wheel tbqh

  • I remember reading somewhere that the daleks are based off the nazis, so this scene was even funnier for me.

  • I Literally just saw this part in the episode, i was laughing out loud.

It's 2AM and there are 5 people asleep in this house

    FML

  • i laughed my head off at that

  • haha those daleks have quite an accent =D

  • Ich bin der Dalek-ant, mit taschenrecher int der hand!

  • Germans are no Nazis!! When will the world get this?!?!?!?!

  • "Halt! Otherwise we will exterminate you! You are now a captive of the Daleks!" XD It just sounds so natural for a Dalek to be speaking German.

  • It's kind of cool, because the Daleks were originally written to be a sort of space Nazis.

  • I know the Daleks are supposed to be the most intimidating race of all time and all, but I just couldn't stop myself from cracking up when I saw this scene. There's just something supremely comical about a German Dalek.

  • Daleks speaking German in Nuremberg. Not symbolic at all.

Also, the fact that the Google Chrome spellchecker does not recognise the word "Dalek" is a crime against humanity.

  • I guess this is the Eleventh Reich...

  • Translation

Exterminate! Exterminate! Stop! Otherwise we will exterminate you. You are now a prisoner of the daleks! Exterminate! Exterminate!

    (I learn german in school)

  • Lol Hitler in the Darleks looking for Jews

  • Heil Dalek! Exterminieren!

  • Is it just me or do the Daleks sound a lot more cooler in German?

  • Ironic that these creatures whose soul purpose is racial cleansing would sound so good speaking German.

  • Well, what can I say? Exterminate!

  • True to the Hitler-esque Daleks.

  • Eik bein exterminieren

  • All the people here, who claim that "exterminieren is not a German word are just wrong. According to the Duden (German equvalent to the Oxford dictionary, only a bit more authorative) "exterminieren" is an old-fashioned word that means "ausrotten, vertreiben"? BTW, "ausrotten" means according to Google Translate "eradicate, destroy, wipe out, kill off".

  • @GothamClive No ones claiming that for fuck sake

  • @Chrisindapurplehouse You did, before you deleted your comment from a month ago. Don't feel bad, you were not the only one in this thread.

  • @GothamClive I was misunderstood I didn't mean not a word I just meant its archaic and kind of the wrong context I took my comment down because people keep reading it that way

  • @Chrisindapurplehouse What's wrong with time travellers using archaic words, and how is it in the wrong context? I think they meant to say "eradicate, destroy, wipe out, kill off".

  • @GothamClive I thought it more meant force out rather than kill either way its fine and yeah the dalek have likely picked up earths lexicon of languages at much earlier dates therefore their words aren't very modern

  • what episode is this?

  • the doctor did not like this video

  • @evantaur There are 2 dislikes. I suppose, Martha don't like them too.

  • This video is the combination of the coolest language with the coolest Dr. Who Aliens. Deutsch klingt besser als Englisch

  • i wanna see a Dalek speak Spanish!! :D

  • Comment removed

  • @Chrisindapurplehouse Google translate says differently, maybe doctor who uses Google translate ;)

  • @RozBoz007 No I know is but it means to expel with force not kill

  • @Chrisindapurplehouse Hmm, should I trust you, or the Duden (German equvalent to the Oxford dictionary, only a bit more authorative) which says that "exterminieren" is an old-fashioned word that means "ausrotten, vertreiben"? BTW, "ausrotten" means according to Google Translate "eradicate, destroy, wipe out, kill off".

  • @GothamClive I'm not arguing with you I know it's a word

  • The only german word I know exterminieren! and because of Doctor Who, so just like everything else in my life, my german knowledge revolves around Doctor Who! :D

  • Comment removed

  • I've never studied german, but I've studied french, italian and having swedish as my mothertounge and I don't think "sie" has anything to do with being polite.

Now I might be wrong about this in german, but in all the other three languages you have one word for "you" in singular and one word for "you" in plural.

The latter which can also be used in a more formal way towards a single person, often towards somone of more importance/higher stature than yourself and/or somebody you don't know well

  • @goerkas In short, I'd think they're simply saying "sie" since they're talking to all humans.

And again, I might be incorrect here so feel free to correct me, but it seems alot of languages have this little thing in common.

  • @goerkas Actually, 'Sie' is always polite; it can be either singular or plural. German has an informal second person plural pronoun, which is 'ihr'.

  • @ardiar2011 This is halfway correct. Considering the context in which the sentence is spoken it must be "Sonst werden wir euch exterminieren" if they were talking to all humans. "Ihr" and "euch" have basically the same meaning, but they are used on different occasions. Don't quite remember the rules for that right now tho, it's hard to explain while using a foreign language.

Fun fact: "Ihr" can actually be used as a formal way of talking to one person as well, but it's rarely used anymore.

  • @Killrat Ihr is nominative and euch is oblique, meaning that 'ihr' is always doing the verb while 'euch' is always being affected by the verb. Das heißt, 'Ihr werdet uns exterminieren', aber 'Wir werden euch exterminieren'.

  • @ardiar2011 Oder "Ihr werdet exterminiert werden" ;p

  • @drewjbrandon

I don't think they're being polite, just using du wouldn't make much sense as it implies they know each other well? ihr would have been better

  • This was the only episode that actually made me a bit scared of the Daleks. Then this happened.

  • why would a dalek use sie/Sie? why are they being polite???

  • @drewjbrandon Well, because it never hurts being polite?.

  • EXTERMINIEREN! EXTERMINIEREN!

  • i cant under stand them but i want to know how to say exterminate in german, what word is it

  • EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

Stop! Otherwise, we will exterminate you!

You are now a prisoner of the daleks!

    EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

  • In a bizarre twist they were with Churchill.

  • Quite ironic given that the Daleks were based on the Nazis. Everytime I watch this clip and hear the Daleks speak German, I just want to click my heels, and raise my right arm in the air.

  • @judgeskidmark but you are european! you should know better. how the nazi's killed je jews, the blitz of london, the getto's in warshaw, the bombing of rotterdam. even in a joke that isnt a funny thing to say.

  • @Prinsgezindepatriot My comment wasn't meant to be a joke or get anyone laughing.

My point was that whenever I hear a Dalek speaking in German, it instantly reminds me of the way Hitler and others would speak when barking orders. The Daleks in German almost SOUND like Nazis.

  • @judgeskidmark I didnt mean your reference to nazi's, but your urge to do the right hand and shout sieh heil!

  • hmm.. would be amazing.. Daleks with Swastika.. =D in the time of WWII.... hell yeah!

  • @gruulam how ironic, they later appeared with a union jack fighting for winston churchill. In the end, he was betrayed, the daleks created a new master race and almost destroyed london, and after that, the entire earth with a fusion bomb, but I know what you mean.

  • This sounds much more impressive than that clip from the German dub of "The Five Doctors," in which the Dalek sounded like he was on helium.

  • They're quite a nice race really, bothering to learn the language of the people they're about to enslave and exterminate. People in the slave trade never tried to learn the language of their slaves, so really Daleks are a lot nicer than humans.

  • well i think the daleks have to learn german better....

  • [Comment Exterminated by the Daleks]

  • Nice to see them speaking their native tongue - they've always been Nazis really :)

  • i really do love this video

  • The Daleks were born for the German language.

  • oh my god it is calleds nürnberg not nuremberg

  • @Milchmann95 du hast recht, aber auch unrecht. genauso wie München auch Munich oder Köln auch cologne heißt auch Nürnberg Nuremberg!

  • @Milchmann95 Think about it, it's common in English to Anglicise place names (or sometimes call them something different altogether). Hence why "Germany", not "Deutschland", this convention applies to a huge portion of significant place names, including Nürnberg. It goes the other way too, for example Scotland is Germanicized into Schottland.

  • this actually means : Stop! otherwise we'll external mineran

they are now a captive of the daleks

  • It doesn't matter how many times I see this, I crack up each time. I hate the Daleks that much more for making me laugh.

  • @hannahzellers I know. I can't help but laugh at them all the time. The dalek themed episodes are my favorites.

  • Nazi Daleks?

  • Did anyone else think "Why does this sound like their natural language?" after watching this? I wonder what it sounded like when this show aired in Germany. Maybe the Germans kept the voices as they were?

  • I really want to know how does Nick Briggs know german and how does he put thet formula into the Daleks...

    Just askin...

  • @Dalektopia Script has German, he reads German. You don't have to know what it means to read it out.

  • I love the fact that you uploaded the funniest part of the episode. Not being essential to the plot, I think they did this in part just for humor.

  • [Comment Removed by the Daleks]

  • Japanise version coming soon !

  • Hm, that is not from the german dub. That was Santiago "SpongeBob" Ziesmer doing the Daleks's voices in germany

  • makes me crack up every time :P

  • it remind me of nazi haha

  • So creepy. Nation did base the Dalek design off of the Nazi cole kettle helmets.

  • how many Nazi references will be commented in this video?

  • i cant help thinking they're dressed as german soldiers with helmets XD

  • Yay! Nazi daleks! (no racism intended, so feel free to feel offended for no reason)

  • @AndyRaslan luckily the dalek race was based off of the nazis

  • Proving once and for all that Daleks use translators. And that it isnt just cause of the TARDIS that everyone understands them :P

although that raises the question: do Daleks feel the need to speak in the tongue of a lesser race? Is Kaled (i presume thats what its called, might be Thal or Skaran or something XD) more superior?

  • @AlexanderT21 It's not Thal. Thal are the blonde ones.

  • Space nazi xD

  • it does sound right.

  • They sound AMAZING!

They should do more aliens in foreign languages and subtitle it when necessary. Listening to all aliens speak perfect english gets old.

  • @mikeyman211

Most good sci-fi does that, I remember one where the aliens tried several languages before finally sighing and asking f the humans spoke english.

  • @lilhwa I think Doctor Who copps out on the language front occasionally. Personally "bo cho ro ko no lo bo yo to" etc. from those rhino-esque creatures sounded soooo stupid.

  • @mikeyman211 having subtitles everywhere would get old faster.

  • @ZKoftherebellion you'd be surprised.

  • What what are they saying? I can tell exterminate exterminate and Halt! But wat else?

  • @timelordthetrain You are now prisoners of the daleks

  • Freaky shit.

  • the daleks are actually based on the nazis.

  • it make so much sense. they're always screaming anyway.

  • German Daleks. Everything has come full circle. By the way...EXTERMINATE!!!!

  • Ah I've translated it wrong it's not you're now caught by the Daleks, it's you're now prisoners of the Daleks!!

  • I fucking laughed my ass off the first time I heard this!

  • Haha! German Daleks!

  • was!? der daleks? insult them. call em die daleks! thatll show em while ure being "extermineren' lol :D

  • This is the proof that daleks are fookin nazis.

  • ficken...

  • I cracked up when I first saw this on BBC1 XD

  • Listen, don't mention the (Time) war! I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it all right

  • @GeordieDan89 I've got a pain in my leg from the injury I got in the war-Cyber war!

  • they sound more frightning in german

  • hahahha

  • It suits them. The Daleks should be German anyway!

  • lol would love to run into my german class shouting this brandashing a knife would be funny as hell

  • AHHAAA!!I watched this episode again on BBC 3 and today I kept goin "EXTERMINIEREN!! EXTERMINIEREN!!" 2 my friend at school and by the end of the day shes like 'oh SHUT UP RUBY!!!"

  • Lmao.

  • can any Germans here give a direct translation of what these daleks are saying ? ^_^

  • " Halt/Stop. Or you will be exterminated.

You are now a captive of the Dalek. "

  • I would probably use prisoner rather than captive :)

  • @TheTortoiseSage "Exterminate! Exterminate! Stop! Or you will be exterminated. You are a prisoner of the Daleks. Exterminate! Exterminate!"

Although, no German I've ever talked to has heard of the word "Exterminieren."

  • @mowingthefrontlawn

That word does indeed exist , its just very old fashioned so many people never heard or used it. ;-)

  • lmao

  • Its good to see that even though the Daleks want to kill you, they're still polite enough to call you "Sie" and not "Du" :P

  • @jjnesbitt86 Oh yes the daleks wouldn't dare to be rude and say "Du bist"

  • @jjnesbitt86

I had to lol at your comment.

And another thing - they're upfront about their actions too. Not like some aliens that need to be asked what their motives are. You don't need to ask a Dalek what it wants - it'll tell you anyway. "Exterminate." Thing is, it'll probably be the last thing you'll ever be told.

    ~JazkaStar~

  • @jjnesbitt86 i think it's awfully polite of them to learn all languages of the prospective exterminated population before going through with it

  • The best translation would be "ausrotten" or indeed "eliminieren" (eliminate like exterminate also stems from latin). Exterminieren follows linguistic convention, i.e. it's a latin verb properly "germanized", so it's not completely inappropriate.

  • @CrankyLibertarian Yeah but this show was intended for an English speaking audience and Exterminieren sounds like Exterminate so it fits better because of it

  • @CrankyLibertarian Still if the show is made primarily for a British audience who expect Exterminate, "ausrotten" wont have the same impact. Eliminieren probably would have though.

  • @CrankyLibertarian i think they werent trying to use the most proper word but a word with same meaning sounding similar to english expressions.. which they did :)

  • @CrankyLibertarian Probably so (in lieu of any subtitles) that the English-speaking audience could still tell that even while speaking in German, the Daleks were still sticking to their old standby catchphrase.

  • This would be the worst thing foor the jewish people and everyone. NAZI DALEKS!!!!!!! hint hint customizers.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAA this cracks me up every time xD

  • Heil Davros!

  • That's not the correct translation of 'exterminate'. The German word for exterminate is 'vertilgen'.

  • @TashkentFox i think "vernichten" or would be more appropriate than "vertilgen".

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not German so I don't know, and I can only remember a little of the German I learned at school.

  • what would the daleks say in china?

  • Is there a Hitler Dalek?

  • @FILMER2180365

    Davros with a 'tash xD

  • that would be davros

  • woo hoo dailects rain supreme maximum extermination!!!!!!!

  • darlek: our idol is adof hitler! ; P

  • Dalek: We work for Hitler now! >3

  • ¬¬ Yeahhh... Maybe if you had better English, Grammar, typing skills etc. I'd believe you.

  • do those daleks belong to hitler or davros?

  • davros

they just rounding up german people, they wouldn't understand the daleks otherwise

  • That was so cool when I first heard that!

  • They are pretty much nazis, eh?

  • every darlek should talk like this it is epic to the max 2.0

  • Daleks speaking German sounds oddly natural...

  • There was a lot of criticism levelled at the original Daleks as their 'racial cleansing' policies were compared to the Nazis (remember the very first storyline was about their attempts to exterminate the Thals)...so your observation is perhaps more appropriate than you think...

  • They're saying Exterminieren and not something else because in English, their most well-known phrase is EXTERMINATE. English-speaking viewers might not understand what they're saying otherwise.

  • Exterminieren! Exterminieren!

  • Is that a German dubbed version or is that part of a real British episode?

  • This was part of the original British episode; the reason it's in German is because this scene depicted Daleks in Germany, and so it would have seemed weird for them to give orders in English.

  • Thanks for this information, halogen123!

  • real british episode

  • Comment removed

  • "Auschreichen"?

That is definately no German word.

Not even close to any German word I know.

Ah, now I know what you could have meant: "Ausradieren" (erase).

That isn´t kompletely wrong, but it sounds weird outside of an old Nazi propaganda speech.

"Vernichten" would be the right German word.

Exterminieren, like in this video, is allright, too.

  • is that evan german

  • they remind me of SS troops...

  • wait waitwait WAIT

    Tardis translates for passengers.

    Why is Martha hearing German?

  • [spoiler] at this point in the show, the tardis has been gutted and reused for something else, a paradox machine.

  • erm... no it hasnt

  • Wrong, you're a whole year off.

That was sound of drums/last of the timelords I think.

  • Perhaps it's because Martha's been out of the TARDIS for so long, excluding her little gallivant in "The Doctor's Daughter"...

  • Maybe she understands German, so it doesn't need to translate.

  • Given she speaks it fluently about a minute later in the episode I think you're on the money with that one. :-)

  • dalek nazi's

  • exterminiern ?? :D:D:D lol des wort kenn ich nich obwohl ich in deutschland leb O.o =D

  • Thank you! I'm such a dork. I listened to this part like ten times and was so frustrated that I couldn't make out the last part. to be honest, this rather made my day.

  • Ono Natzi Daleks

  • lol ha i just posted that comment then i look up and see it posted by u lol
