I've heard that the Nino version 2was played on the East Coast & the Little Caesar version was played out west. Listening to local WIBG in Philadelphia they played the Little Caesar version. As a record collector I didn't hear the Nino version till years later (but I do own both).
Those O B G,s remind me of you,A great alternate version that I heard on Norn N Nite,s SiriusXX Saturday show recently.I love the alternate version even though it's not the Standard of Little Caesar and The Romans...Great Post and remember DOO WOP is truly non stop!!!
I used to hear this occasionally on the Doo-Wop Shop on CBS-FM, and always enjoyed it. Little Caesar & Co. is charming, with the plaintive lead and plodding piano, and I think the recitation on Little Caesar's version is better. But I prefer this one, especially the background part. And yes, "remindS me of you" drives me crazy, too!
I grew up in the Hartford, CT listening area and Nino and the Ebb Tides' version of the song was the hit, with Little Caesar's version getting less airplay. I was glad, too, because I thought Nino's version superior and Little Caesar's "reminds me of you" drove me crazy, even as an 8th grader. I was totally surprised to find out later that Nino's version never hit the Billboard Top 100.
It is in my top 5 favorites records of all-time!! I actually saw Little Ceasar and the Romans do their version on American Bandstand and went out and bought the record shortly there after. Then I heard this version on the radio and went completely out of my mind. I believe this was Tony DiBari's first lead vocal as he was the second tenor with the group. Wow, maybe you should have been lead on all the recordings!!!
Somewhere I have my dad's copy on 45 of Nino & the Ebb Tides doing "Jukebox Saturday Night." They updated the lyrics from the Glenn Miller version to reflect 1957 or so. It's good.
This is the version that was popular and played on the radio in the New York area and not the Little Caesar version. But the Little Caesar version was the original.
I am a dedicated doowoper. The charm of many doowop is the natural quality of the original singers--grammatical errors and all. For example: The Medallions in "The Letter"; however sometimes a revised cover version doesn't necessarily denigrate the original but refreshes an older version with different voices and better harmony.
To have the gall to say that these guys are far superior to Little Caesar and the Romans is just sinful. Granted these guys have talent and have done many a song justice, but I feel that a true music lover can appreciate the song in its entirety through Little Caesar and the Roman's version...
@dr57doowop All you need to do is play each version back to back and it is beyond obvious that Nino and the Ebtides version is better, especially during the chorus. Listen up, it is way better!
beautiful oldie...

Little Caesar's version is more emotional, that's why people prefer it, regardless of quality. Its rings more true.

I've always liked both versions, but that "reminds me of you" by Little Cesar does make me wince.

Little Caesar is the standard for the "purist doowoper", however I find that this version by Nino & the Ebb Tides is superior vocally and musically.
