Paice's drum solo reminds me a lot of those of John Bonham & Ginger Baker: Imporovised, lots of tom & snare with less cymbal, big build up, very similar drum solo songs (Moby Dick, Toad, & this version of The Mule are pretty similar).
@eqsmooth Neil Peart has no variety to his solos. Nothing is original. Ian Paice, John Bonham, and Ginger Baker never played the same version of "The Mule," "Moby Dick," or "Toad" even once. All three are geniuses in terms of originality and creativity.
@jetfre Ian Paice is under rated. But Bonham is probably my favorite hard rock/metal drummer as an accompanist. I did not find Cream very interesting and when I met Baker he was a mess (1991), like Levon Helm several years ago. I thought he was gonna die. Then he came back. The real difference between Peart and Paice is improvisation and the ability to play jazz. Neil would love to swing but he just can't. He appreciates it. @jetfreak4 good point, i used to be just another peart-is-god type drummer until i started to realize that all his solos are generally the same, his live performances of songs are note for note like they are on the record, and he basically cant improvise, what the point of drumming really is
@drummercraig21 I agree somewhat, but the real point of drumming is to keep time for the other musicians so they can play the melody, harmony and solos. The drummer should almost always lock in w/the the piano, bass, or rhythm guitar and let whoever else is in the band get the point of the song across. Rush is an exception to the rule but drummers are generally hired to be clocks, human metronomes. Keeping time rarely involves improvising. The drum solo is something else entirely.
@Cbarrett94 Ian Paice and John Bonham are undisputed the kings of the bass drum. Paice holds the throne with his left foot, Bonzo holds it with his right foot.

I considered Ian Paice to be a drum god when I played drums in a hard rock band in the early 70's. My top 5 rock drummers then were Ian Paice, Ginger Baker, Carmine Appice and Keith Moon ( Mitch Mitchell too). My theory was that Ian seemed to play so effortlessly people didn't realize just how good he was/ is. There were great Jazz drummers that preceded all the great rock drummers and that's a separate list. Most of the great early rock drummers learned their chops by listening to Jazz Greats.
@HerbredMadness Of course dear HM, but I only wanted to bring , didn't want to exclude...can't name ALL the best drummers in this little space...J.Hiseman,G.Krupa, T.Bozio,C.Powell,L.White etc...etc...greetings from Antwerp, Belgium, Europe.
It sounds like hes using a double bass-pedal at 6:45 to 6:55! But its a single pedal and hes rolling on two toms at the same time while marking on the snare...(!) I really dont think a guy like Danny Carey or Mike Portnoy can do that cause they never dared to include jazz influence directly into their music. @fremmed1 I noticed that as well. I read at one time that it was customary for English drummers back then to use that method. I really wish I had that kit. I love its sound. Not too powerful, not too light, juuuusst right in sound. So clean and crisp as well. I wish he'd stayed on a Ludwig quite frankly. I like him a lot better on a Ludwig than I do on a Pearl.
it's tough form my diletant standpoint to judge what exactly makes one great drummer better than other, but having watched this video I really can't figure out what did Bonzo, Copeland and Powell do so incredible that people place them ahead of Paice?...
One reason might be not as many people have heard of Paice. Regardless, Paice is every bit as skilled as these three. Carl Palmer, Ginger Baker, Neil Peart, John Bonham, Bill Ward, Stewart Copeland, Ian Paice, Mitch Mitchell, Terry Bozzio, and Cozy Powell along with a select few others in my opinion could all qualify as being among the best rock drummers. To compare them is ridiculous in my opinion...too many discrepancies and differences.
An interesting comment, for one rarely mentions Bill Ward and Stewart Copeland in the same sentence. I enjoy Paice, Mitchell and Copeland more because they had a jazzier edge to them, as if they actually owned an Elvin Jones record. The other drum solos is where the lead guitarist goes to a bodega to get a sandwich...
@jetfreak4 Mate, many people between 30 and 50 have heard of Ian and regard his solo on Made in Japan as THE solo. He's wrist technique is outstanding. Check out Buddy Rich though!
@jetfreak4 Agreed. Paice had many of the skills that drummers like Gadd, Bonzo, Ginger Baker etc. had. The only obvious difference is Ian's centering the solo around the snare drum. He uses all of his kit quite proficiently but his focus was more on snare. The guys that came after with some of the same chops simply re-worked them around the entire kit for a different feel. That's just my opinion though. Others will surely see it differently.
@flowerlower005 I have, and I have yet to hear any professional drummer say that Neil Peart is the best drummer. I have listened to Rush many times. As far as an idiot, that title is more fitting for you if you just decide that because he was voted that, he must be. He has nothing on Carl Palmer. Or Dennis Chambers, Billy Cobham, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, etc. I'd be interested to know how many people that voted for Peart were drummers and how many were just fans.
right, prog rock drumming is different from hard rock drumming, jazz-rock fusion, etc - (though I have to admit that Billy Cobham always imrpesses me mightily every time I hear him) - but I like 'em all, the world is a better place for the presence of all these guys - that's interesting, who do drummers like best vs music fans -
@BlackCrowNavajo Excellent question, I've often asked the same. I'd say first is notoriety, radio air play, and general hype. If one knows what to observe, he can see that Paice has great fast, clean rudiments, is stamina, creativity, and unique style. He's more often apreciated by those who respect jazz drummers, rather than straight-up head bangers. Because music is an art, not a sport, it's always a matter of taste and opinion. But for me, it's about apreciation.
@charlessavarese Agree completely! and it is indeed a matter of taste. this is why so many fans - including myself - can not make their mind if Page is better than Blackmore, Lord is better than Wakeman, or Dio is better than Plant... they are all unique and great, and such disputes will only serve as pleasure, as long as people don't embark on insultin each others' tastes...
@STRATCAT101 No, believe it or not, it's called practice. I still respect Paice and consider him to be one of the best rock drummers if not the best, but there are other greats I would put alongside him...Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Ginger Baker, Carl Palmer, Mitch Mitchell, and Neil Peart as well. It's all technique and practice. I've learned most of his tricks, such as the one-handed drum roll, and I practice this solo religously. Buddy Rich is the best drummer...he is yet to be matched.
A self-thaught, icredible drummer, barely 20 year-old at the time! A typical drumming trademark from Ian Paice, a constant style you could pick out from any Deep Purple track, and as ever, awesome, then as now, and now as forever, for certain bands are destined to remain immortal.
The guy criticising Bonham hasn't the first clue what it's all about and is probably 12. Nobody sounded like Bonham before or since, although he's been much imitated. It's about sound and ideas as much as technique. Bonhams grooves and fills are like melodies, so memorable. Who gives a fuck about speed? Anybody can acquire speed if you practice hard enough!
ok paice in action....need i say more???stop comparing coz all bonham, paice, peart had their own unique styles and they were important to world drumming big tym..
dude deep purple has so much energy every one of their song begginings is like an ending with all that power. and paice is goin beast mode on them skins.
samtotheg - you're talking out your ass! Ian's always been amazing, no doubt! But nobody has paved the way for rock drummers like John Henry Bonham did... And comparing either of them with Joe Morello is to say that apples are better than oranges! All three have contributed much to the world of drumming in their own rights!
you probaly suck at drums hardrock bonham did nothing revolutionary for drums and was average at best that gos for all of you guys sayin hes god he sux compared to status and claim u guys give him, moon was the first lead drummer, ginger baker was the first to use double pedal and use jazz patterns, and unknown drummers like bill bruford and carl palmer will drum bonham under the table, so what exactly did he do,play a long ass boring solo with his hands.
@samtotheg What in the FUCK is your beef with me, motherfucker...?? And what does my playing ability have to do with anything being discussed on this page anyway, you brain dead fuck... I obviously love Ian's playing or else I wouldn't have been here in the first place. Pull your head out of your ass and pay attention to what's being said as a whole before running your mouth... Better yet - go back to sitting in the corner playing with yourself and shut the fuck up! You ignorant fucking moron!!

@jetfreak4 Great list, though I'd add Bill Bruford and Keith Moon to it.
jonathan401 1 year ago
@jetfreak4 Mate, many people between 30 and 50 have heard of Ian and regard his solo on Made in Japan as THE solo. He's wrist technique is outstanding. Check out Buddy Rich though!
beowulf1963 1 year ago
@jetfreak4 Agreed. Paice had many of the skills that drummers like Gadd, Bonzo, Ginger Baker etc. had. The only obvious difference is Ian's centering the solo around the snare drum. He uses all of his kit quite proficiently but his focus was more on snare. The guys that came after with some of the same chops simply re-worked them around the entire kit for a different feel. That's just my opinion though. Others will surely see it differently.

@jetfreak4 You are writing this here!! You must be a idiot!
If we are talking about drummers?!?!
Neil Perth has been voted the best drummer in the world 6 times.
So listen to RUSH and you anderstand why!!
flowerlower005 1 year ago
@flowerlower005 I have, and I have yet to hear any professional drummer say that Neil Peart is the best drummer. I have listened to Rush many times. As far as an idiot, that title is more fitting for you if you just decide that because he was voted that, he must be. He has nothing on Carl Palmer. Or Dennis Chambers, Billy Cobham, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, etc. I'd be interested to know how many people that voted for Peart were drummers and how many were just fans.
jetfreak4 1 year ago
@jetfreak4
right, prog rock drumming is different from hard rock drumming, jazz-rock fusion, etc - (though I have to admit that Billy Cobham always imrpesses me mightily every time I hear him) - but I like 'em all, the world is a better place for the presence of all these guys - that's interesting, who do drummers like best vs music fans -

But for me, it's about apreciation.
charlessavarese 1 year ago
@charlessavarese Agree completely! and it is indeed a matter of taste. this is why so many fans - including myself - can not make their mind if Page is better than Blackmore, Lord is better than Wakeman, or Dio is better than Plant... they are all unique and great, and such disputes will only serve as pleasure, as long as people don't embark on insultin each others' tastes...

Paice is is thee best drummer, ever since i heard his solo on IN ROCK,i don't know how he does some of the things he does.Magic sticks maybe?
STRATCAT101 1 year ago
@STRATCAT101 No, believe it or not, it's called practice. I still respect Paice and consider him to be one of the best rock drummers if not the best, but there are other greats I would put alongside him...Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Ginger Baker, Carl Palmer, Mitch Mitchell, and Neil Peart as well. It's all technique and practice. I've learned most of his tricks, such as the one-handed drum roll, and I practice this solo religously. Buddy Rich is the best drummer...he is yet to be matched.
jetfreak4 1 year ago
Simply the best rock drum solo ever.
Ian Paice could be a great jazz drummer too.
His technique and his taste were and still are extraordinary.
I have listened 1000's of time to this solo, but I still find something new, never heard before.
His touch, dinamycs, speed on the snare and musical taste are unique.
Ian Paice is the Buddy Rich of rock.

pardon my concentration, but does this seem a lot like the song molby dick by led zeppelin?
ledzeppelinfreak13 1 year ago
A self-thaught, icredible drummer, barely 20 year-old at the time! A typical drumming trademark from Ian Paice, a constant style you could pick out from any Deep Purple track, and as ever, awesome, then as now, and now as forever, for certain bands are destined to remain immortal.

@Toottycat He was actually 24 years old.

Anybody can acquire speed if you practice hard enough!

samtotheg - you're talking out your ass! Ian's always been amazing, no doubt! But nobody has paved the way for rock drummers like John Henry Bonham did... And comparing either of them with Joe Morello is to say that apples are better than oranges! All three have contributed much to the world of drumming in their own rights!
HardRockDrumr 1 year ago 2
you probaly suck at drums hardrock bonham did nothing revolutionary for drums and was average at best that gos for all of you guys sayin hes god he sux compared to status and claim u guys give him, moon was the first lead drummer, ginger baker was the first to use double pedal and use jazz patterns, and unknown drummers like bill bruford and carl palmer will drum bonham under the table, so what exactly did he do,play a long ass boring solo with his hands.

@samtotheg I agree to you. Bonham was cool, but Moby Dick was only worth it in the studio version. During the concerts he just improvised.
And guys, stop arguing, they're all awesome!
HerbredMadness 1 year ago
@samtotheg What in the FUCK is your beef with me, motherfucker...?? And what does my playing ability have to do with anything being discussed on this page anyway, you brain dead fuck... I obviously love Ian's playing or else I wouldn't have been here in the first place. Pull your head out of your ass and pay attention to what's being said as a whole before running your mouth... Better yet - go back to sitting in the corner playing with yourself and shut the fuck up! You ignorant fucking moron!!
