It would have been funny to see US army facing German Blietztrieg. They would have been pulverized. US army of 1940 was a joke. German victory over the French in 1940 was a tactical victory. A combination of massive air and armored divisions attacks. German troops failed when they frontly attacked French fortifications of Maginot line. They lost thousands troops here. Many forts of this line surrendered only after armistice. Open real history books, not antiFrench google bullshits.
@Camarale German actually never attacked Maginote line so how the hell could they lose thousand of soldiers? Offensive through the Belgium was the basic plan (which was actually modified Schliffien plan) and that's what happened. While French army couldn't handle Blitzkrieg, France surrendered. There were a lot of factors including German blitzkrieg strategy and land-air forces cooperation, French low morale (effect of high losses in WWI), mistakes of generality and fake trust in Maginote line.
The Germans didn't attack the Maginot line, during the main phase of France invasion, but in the last phase. They tried to take Maginot line, mainly by using heavy canons and hundreds bombs with Stuka, but also with troops, but they failed. Many of these forts were still intact and surrendered only on orders, after armistice. The myth of the non French opposition to Germans is a total crap. Germans lost 45000 killed and 111000 woundeds in 6 weeks. Too many people are brainwashed.
@Camarale German overall casualties are hard to determine. A common estimate is about 27.000 killed, 111.000 wounded and 18.000 missing. So it's actually true what u said. Nevertheless France lost twice more and kept fighting for only 6 weeks while they weren't outnumbered significantly (135 German divisions to 104 French div. + 45 British, Dutch, Belgian div.). Excluding some marginal skirmishes, Maginote line was taken without combat after French surrender, so I don't know what myth u believe.
Several attaks were carried on against Maginot line, during campaign of France, but the most important were in June, with 210 mm Krupp and 305 mm Skoda heavy guns, when some forts stopped German assaults, like the Michelsberg and the Mont-des-Welches batteries on 22 June 1940. The Latiremont battery fired 1577 shells in 1 day on 21 June 1940 against German assault sections. The last forts surrendered only in July. It was not a tourist trip for Germans, to take Maginot Line.
@Camarale The thing is that Maginot Line had no significant role during Battle of France. Designed as main defence, built at huge cost and deployed with dozens of divisions, but all of these seems to be just a waste. That's true that French garrison hold some forts, but also Germans broke through in a lot of places (during 1st week of combat northern Maginot was taken). If German casualties rised up to 45.000 (3 full divs), French lost at least 5 divisons circled near Metz and later much more.
@Camarale German advantage of tanks is also a myth. At the beginning of Battle of France German deployed 2.500 tanks (mostly light tanks PzKfw II and III) and other divisions were motorised in 10% (despite to what "blitzkrieg" myth suggests), while Allied owned about 3.400 tanks (3.200 French) and more vehicles than Germans, but due to their numbers where also motorised in about 10%. However French commanders found tanks as infantry support and German Blitzkrieg pointed quite opposite.
Looks nice, but what tactic possibilities could the french army have with these guns? You can´t fire arty while in full retreat, you can´t fire arty while collaborating with the enemy and you can´t fire arty when your allied troops (americans, brits) are chasing the enemy out of YOUR country. First the germans whooped your asses attacking right through what you thought would be invulnerable (maginot) than you got rescued by foreign soldiers. Nothin to be proud of...
@oberchobo The Germans didn't attack through the Maginot Line. They went to the thinnest point around the unfinished parts. French artillery was actually very affective. At first the Germans couldn't move close to the Meuse river without coming under heavy fire. The problem was the French command did not realize placing strong air support around the Ardennes would be it's undoing once the Luftwaffe began attacking artillery.
@oberchobo So much of these problems which led to the eventually German breakthrough could have been avoided had Gamelin not misused his reserves. It was sad that France's fall could have possibly been prevented had he not moved Giruard's Seventh army away from the Meuse sector towards Holland as part of the Breda plan. The main thrust of the German attack would hit the Ardennes against the weakest of the French forces. And once through would have no Seventh army waiting for them.
@oberchobo we are proud of destroying the half of the german tank division..for exemple...or between 400 and 500 luftwaff aircraft shot down...aircraft which weren't involved in the battle of britain
The france lost was politic, not strategic, we had hundred of aircraft fighter and tank able to fight when the armistice took place, a lot of soldier continued fighting till july
@bingofioul If one country has nothing to be proud of in that war it was france. Just remember vichy... you even fought the allies in africa. Only thing you did was to feel like heros and fire a few shots into the backs of retreating germans while the allies fought them out of your country. Just an example: a country that really fought and had no chance of success was poland. 200000 soldiers died from a tiny population of 30mio. Only 250000 french soldiers died from 60mio... see what I mean???
@oberchobo For me these numbers mean you didn´t fought half as hard or good as poland. And that while your army was better equipped than the polish army... For a frenchman to be proud of anything from the WW2 is like a german being proud of this time, dumb and disgusting.
I remind you that the French lost 100000 killed in 6 weeks in May/June 1940.They inflicted 45000 fatalities and 111000 woundeds to Germans, before to give up.War sarted in September 1939.German offensive was only 7 months later,in May 1940.It would have been pretty to see US troops facing the Blietzkrieg in 1940.Not pretty. And i remind you that a new French regular army fought on most of this war theaters after 1942. Free French forces were 1,3 million involved in Europe in 1945.
@Camarale they dont give up ! politique say to give up and make armistice ! the faut of lake of good general , sure they all come from st cyr ; learn the war in school and look what tragedie happend
They fought in Italy,Cassino, in North Africa. Most of the expeditionnary forces who landed in Provence in 1944, in DRAGOON operation were French. The De Lattre B Army. They fought in Italy,Cassino,in the Alps,on eastern France, in Germany, in Normandy, with the 2nd Leclerc armored division. They cleared all the Atlantic French coast German pockets. French WW2 total casualties, 600000, military and civilians, were higher than all US losses, on all Fronts, Pacific and Europe, 416800.
Included 67000 French civilians killed by allied bombings, mostly US, in an heavily damaged country. At least, try to open real history books, before to spit and spread the same biased usual hatred craps. Really boring, after a while.
French should have canned the big guns for more tanks and Gernerals who would keep them grouped together instead of spreading them around so thin they hadn't a chance.
what the French army needed (in both wars) was more NCOs and officers. when the best and the brightest do not choose to serve, then that culture is doomed to fail on the battlefield. this is starting to happen in the USA, but the lousy economy helps propel many good folks into the service. but then the elites, the ones who send the troops, have no sons or daughters in, and that says a lot about a culture. see John Mosier's books for comparison of Allied and German armies in both wars.
I'm sure many would love to trade in Sarkozy already for Putin. I've heard similar admiration from French Canadians for the strong and silent Russian judoka. Best poutine in Montreal: Lafleur 3620 St-Denis. And that would be 'As-ti Ca-lisse Ta-bar-nak!' in lieu of 'Oh ! Nom-de-Dieu pu-tain bordel de mer-de....'
