@rjreid1958 zero is good. hit behind shoulder. pig was dead after first shot but kept shooting because we didn't want to track him in the tall grass. Thanks for the input. Looking back i would have done a headshot....but oh well....it's a dead piggy

Might want to get rid of those bolt actions and get something a little more serious for feral hog hunting. When I was living in Oklahoma I used an SKS that had a new barrel installed for better accuracy. The 7.62X39 is a great hog stopper out to 150 yards or so. I also used my M1 Garand. If I ever move back I'll get an AR-15 platform rifle chambered in 6.8mm Remington SPC which is an awsome hog stopper.

Damn i knew they were tough animals but jesus. What caliber are you guys using on them? On that first hog where did the first couple hits land?

@Viking445 we were using a .270 and a 6mm. We both hit on the first shot (one in the shoulder and one a touch back) It was a dead pig the whole time. At that time we wanted to make sure it went down. The last thing you want to do is wade through tall grass, after dark, looking for a dead pig.

@cchr111 Really?? I would have never guessed...so I assume then that they have taste and flavor like a domestic farm raised pig. I might have to try one of these things sometimes. I have seen the damage that they do...unbelieveable unless one sees it for themselves. I only have 2 normal rifles...a .243 and a 300 Winchester mag and several pistols...what do you suggest using? Being an "X" gun dealer on the side for many years...I also have REAL automatic weapons...Uzi, M-16 and H&K toys.

I had boar meet when I was a kid visiting relatives in Mexico. It was the worst tasting meat I ever had, I couldn't finish it. Bull meat is ok, really no different from 'regular' beef (steer or even heifer). So going after a feral hog (boar) what age or weight do look at to determine if the meat will be ok?

@JRF1961 the big boars and larger sows will taste more gamy than the smaller ones the 80-90lbs hogs are the best for bar-b-q and eating.

around 60 pounds of meat. On a big boar like this one the taste is ok. On sows and smaller boars the taste is great.
