No. An asteroid like this will never hit the earth. It's too big. And no, just because an asteroid hits the earth doesn't mean we will become extinct. And again, no, it is not certain that it WILL happen. We might be able to prevent an asteroid from hitting the earth.

I believe that we have the capability to destroy a comet before it hits the earth....... so I dont believe this will happen..... Its not a matter of IF it is a matter of when are we going to be hit by something big enough to destroy or cause major destruction, but when this happens we are prepared enough to stop it from completely destroying the planet........ Don't go so fast on that :) The Bible has no mention of the end of the world, period. I've read Revelation, twice. It's mostly about plagues and suffering on the sinners, and about what heaven looks like. No cataclysm (besides war) is mentioned, period. NGC and History Channel have misinterpreted the Bible too many times as an act of heresy!
I'm a devout Christian myself, but I think some Christians are taking words of the Apostle John too far, and it's those who give Christianity a bad name :(

scientists could do several things to save earth, if man kind was at risk we could accomplish a lot, we could build the biggest nuke ever and put it in the meteor, hundreds of mid size asteroids killing a few people beats on bigass asteroid killing civilization, if we could really get it ahead of time, we could mine it first getting some of the material out of the way, then nuking it, we could get there ahead of time and put an ion rocket on it, we could blow up the moon and mess gravity up

If we shoot a thousand nukes at the asteroid, of course it will destroy the asteroid, but not completly, but into smaller pieeces, so as it scatters it will spread it's damage even further out and eventualy hit earth anyways.

Well atm they theorise there might be multi universes, and already there working on trying to unlock new dimensions so we can understand them using the LCH as well as trying to find the higgs boson. As for the universe expanding, who knows maybe its expanding into one of those dimensions that we simply cant understand yet. Thats why the LCH is creating a situation similar to moments after the big bang.

i saw this type of a show on Discovery. on way to avoid the asteroid is to send a space shuttle and alter the path by pushing the asteroid out of the way of the earth. Even if it moved a bit the asteroid can miss the earth.
